Tribute to Bob and Wilma Hayes, founders of Bob’s Gun & Tackle Shop
Bob and Wilma Approx. 1990 Approx. 1993. Bob working one of his food plots.
Robert F. Hayes was born July 6,1935 and passed away into the arms of his Savior on Friday, April
19, 2019 surrounded by his family. He was 83 years old. Bob was born in Izard County, Arkansas to
William and Bernice Hayes and moved to Michigan at 2-3 years of age. He was raised on a farm in Robert F. Hayes

time as he could outside, exploring nature. He always described himself as a self-taught hunter and
fisherman.
He went back to Arkansas to visit family friends one summer and met a sweet Arkansas girl named
Wilma Taylor who would become his wife the following year after a brief courtship that consisted of
writing and sending letters to each other up to 2-3 times a week.
After getting married in Arkansas, they moved to Michigan where they eventually started their family.
Dad had been working a full time job at a local factory and was also selling from door to door, earning
money to pay his way through a 2-year sales program at Davenport College and also attended Dale
Carnegie classes. Decades later, he often credited this experience to much of his business success and
would recount certain instructors by name and valuable lessons he learned from them.

first addition. It was at this time in 1962 that Dad acted on his dream to combine his love for the outdoors with a
store. He and Wilma erected a tiny 9’x12’ shack with their own hands behind their Freeport area home
and Bob’s Gun & Tackle Shop was born. They opened the store with 16 guns, a few boxes of ammo, and
some reloading supplies. Business prospered as they expanded the next year and again 2 years after
that. Bob continued to work the factory job for the first 5 years of the business while Wilma tended the
business and raised their growing family. They put every penny back into the store in those first few years along with whatever they could
contribute from his factory job to build inventory.
Finally, in 1968 they purchased property near Hastings and built a larger facility which is where Bob’s Gun & Tackle Shop is located today.
February 1964 - Building at far left
Bob and Wilma worked long hours, often 6-7 days a week for many years to build the business. They endured the loss of a 10 year old

you knew no matter what your status was in life, you always got treated the same.” Bob was driven and
didn’t have any quit in him. Although he was tough as nails, he was also kind and loving with a unique
sense of humor. Wilma was gentle and always had a kind word to say. Everyone loved her.
Bob continued hunting and fishing throughout most of his life. He enjoyed his out-of-state hunts and
pursued elk, moose, mule deer, antelope, caribou, and black bear in addition to Michigan whitetails. He also
enjoyed a relaxing afternoon with rod and reel in hand. He was passionate about making improvements to
his property to benefit wildlife. He planted hundreds, perhaps thousands of trees and continually planted
food plots whenever he could.
When Bob was in his 60’s, he decided to semi-retire from working at the store and handed management

Geraldine Damm in 2005. Together they enjoyed going to auctions, thrift stores, and local restaurants, with
a daily trip to Bob’s Gun & Tackle Shop to check in and see how things were going.
Eventually Bob developed dementia but was able to live out his remaining years at his home with his wife, Geri and also with several wonderful
caregivers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma, daughter Sandra, grandson Derek Williams, parents William and Bernice Hayes,
sister Helen, and brothers Kenny and Richard. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine, son Larry (Jennifer) Hayes, daughter Debra (James
II) Williams, son Stephen (Jennifer) Hayes, daughter Cynthia (Gregory) Faubert, 19 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Bob is also
survived by brother Raymond (Linda) Hayes, sister Pauline (Mike) Schaendorf, brother David (Vicki) Hayes, sister Lois (Jamie) Carr, sister

late May, through June and into
mid-July. Atlantic salmon stage

upper St. Marys River.
The lower end of the St. Marys
River between Frying Pan Island
and the Detour Light is where
most anglers are targeting Atlantic
salmon. Both the east side of the
river channel near the eastern end
of the Upper Peninsula and the west
side of the channel near Drum-

Atlantic salmon. Anglers need to
keep their head on a swivel because
this stretch of the St. Marys River is
exceptionally busy with Great Lakes

Bonus Species
This area of northern Lake

the reason anglers travel to north-

the big buck. Whereas at the end of the season, if
someone hasn’t taken a deer yet, sometimes they
start to get desperate, sneaking around and doing
something they’re not supposed to do.”
Among the methods to stop poaching, conser-
vation officers rely on citizens of local communi-
ties. As first responders, conservation officers live
in the places they serve, allowing them to create
and cultivate relationships.
“Once the community learns they can trust a
conservation officer, individuals feel comfortable
contacting us,” Painter said. “It can take years to
develop these relationships, for people to talk to
us, knowing that we will keep the conversation
confidential. We rely on communities being in-
volved. Recently, someone in the grocery parking
lot told me about a poaching event.”
When a conservation officer receives a poach-
ing complaint, whether from the RAP hotline
or directly from a community member, he or
she chooses the best way to begin investigating.
Sometimes, this involves the use of a decoy.
DNR decoys can range from taxidermied
animals or birds to more elaborate presentations,
including fish with tails that move with stream
currents and mechanical and remotely operated
deer or turkeys.
“There’s nothing like having a decoy – you
can see what someone’s hunting ethics are – you
can see what someone does when they think
nobody is watching,” Painter said.
As simple as the decoy process is, it involves

be ready to approach the poacher, and the third
needs to be in a vehicle nearby.
Decoys are great tools to catch trespassers or
people who have been shining lights or shooting
onto private property from a passing vehicle. If
a landowner reports this behavior, decoys are a
great bait to catch a poacher while in the act.
“Road hunting is where we get a lot of com-
plaints,” Painter said. “Camp owners, property
owners – they get upset when someone is shoot-
ing from the road and onto their property. Decoys
are a tool we use to make contacts, both good and
bad. Usually, the people hunting properly, ethi-
cally and legally, they love seeing us use decoys.”
Painter said he’s caught one poacher three
times, two of those occasions by using decoys.
“Once with a turkey decoy, once with a
grouse decoy,” Painter said. “The third time, the
judge took his gun because there was a pattern of
behavior and he wasn’t learning.”
Those patterns are common traits conserva-
tion officers see in poachers.
“When they’re breaking one law by poach-
ing, they’re likely breaking multiple others,”
Painter said.
Embedded within communities, conservation
officers can keep a close watch on changes on the
landscape.
“We’re always looking for tracks,” Painter
said. “We’ve learned to investigate – why did
someone pull over on the side of the road in a
remote area? Most of the time it’s as simple as
someone walking their dog or picking berries.
“But other times, we’ll find evidence of
poaching – such as dumped carcasses.
We’re going to look into finding the reason
that someone was driving down a dead-end
two-track.”
Trash piles included, conservation officers
pay attention to everything.
“Poachers tend to disregard the land,” said
Conservation Officer Sam Koscinski, who patrols
in Manistee County. “When I’m on river patrol
during the day, I’ll see a pile of garbage. I’ll
check that spot later at night and find a group of
anglers illegally fishing or conducting other il-
legal activity.
