Time and Work

Time and Work - Important Formulas :

Work from Days:

 If A can do a piece of work in n days, then A's 1 day's work = 1/n

Days from Work:

 If A's 1 day's work = 1/n, then A can finish the work in n days.

Ratio:

 If A is thrice as good a workman as B, then:

Ratio of work done by A and B = 3 : 1

 Ratio of times taken by A and B to finish a work = 1 : 3

 If M1 men can do W1 work in D1 days working H1 hours per day and M2 men can do W2 work in
D2 days working H2 hours per day (where all men work at the same rate), then

 M1 D1 H1 / W1 = M2 D2 H2 / W2

 If A can do a piece of work in p days and B can do the same in q days, A and B together can finish it
in pq / (p+q) days

Solved Problems
1. If 20 men can build a wall 56 meters long in 6 days, what length of a similar wall can be built by 35 men
in 3 days?
Answer : 49 m
Explanation :
Let the required length be x meters.
⇒ More men, More length built ( ∴ Direct proportion )
⇒ Less days, Less length built ( ∴ Direct Proportion )
Men = 20 : 35 :: 56 : x
Days = 6 : 3 :: 56 : x
⇒ ( 20 * 6 * x ) = ( 35 * 3 * 56 )
x = ( 35 * 3 * 56 ) / ( 20 * 6 )
=7*7
= 49
Hence, the required length is 49 m

2. Three pipes A, B and C can fill a tank in 6 hours. After working at it together for 2 hours, C is closed and
A and B can fill the remaining part in 7 hours. Find the number of hours taken by C alone to fill the tank?
Answer : 14 hours
Explanation :
Part filled in 2 hours = 2 / 6
=1/3

1
Remaining part = ( 1 - ( 1 / 3 ) )
=2/3
( A + B )′s 7 hour′s work = 2 / 3
( A + B )′s 1 hour′s work = ( 2 / 3 ) * ( 1 / 7 )
= 2 / 21
C′s 1 hour′s work = ( A + B + C )′s 1 hour′s work) - ( A + B )′s 1 hour′s work )
= ( 1 / 6 ) - ( 2 / 21 )
= 1 / 14
C alone can fill the tank in 14 hours

3. Ten women can do a work in six days. Six men can complete the same work in five days. What is the
ratio between the capacity of a man and a woman?
Answer : 2 : 1
Explanation :
( 10 * 6 ) women can complete the work in 1 day.
1 woman′s 1 day′s work = 1 / 60
( 6 * 5 ) men can complete the work in 1 day
1 man′s 1 day′s work = 1 / 30
Required ratio = ( 1 / 30 ) : ( 1 / 60 )
=2:1

4. A can do a piece of work in 5 days and B can do the same work in 10 days. How many days will both
take to complete the work?
Answer : 3 1/3days
Explanation :
If A can complete a work in x days.
B can complete the same work in y days.
Both of them together can complete the work = ( x * y ) / ( x + y ) days
Required Number of days = ( 5 * 10 ) / ( 5 + 10 )
= 3 1/3days

5. P is able to do a piece of work in 15 days and Q can do the same work in 20 days. If they can work
together for 4 days, what is the fraction of work left?
Answer : 8 / 15
Explanation :
Amount of work P can do in 1 day = 1 / 15
Amount of work Q can do in 1 day = 1 / 20
Amount of work P and Q can do in 1 day = ( 1 / 15 ) + ( 1 / 20 )
= ( 4 + 3 ) / 60
= 7 / 60
Amount of work P and Q can together do in 4 days = 4 * ( 7 / 60 )
= 28 / 60
= 7 / 15
Fraction of work left = 1 – ( 7 / 15 )
= ( 15 - 7 ) / 15
= 8 / 15

6. There are 6 working days in a regular week and for each day, the working hours are 10. A man earns Rs.
2.10 per hour for regular work and Rs. 4.20 per hour for overtime. If he earns Rs.525 in 4 weeks, how many
hours did he work?
Answer : 245 hrs
Explanation :
Regular working hours in 4 weeks = ( 4 * 6 * 10 )
= 240 hr

2
Amount earned by working in these regular working hours = Rs. ( 240 * 2.10 )
= Rs. 504
Additional amount he earned = 525 - 504
= Rs. 21
Hours he worked overtime = 21 / 4.2
= 210 / 42
= 5 hrs
Total hours he worked = 240 + 5
= 245 hrs

7. A man can do a piece of work in 5 days, but with the help of his son, he can do it in 3 days. In what time
can the son do it alone?
Answer : 7 1/2 days
Explanation :
Son′s 1 day′s work = [ ( 1 / 3 ) - ( 1 / 5 ) ]
= ( 5 - 3 ) / 15
= 2 / 15
The son alone can do the work = 15 / 2
= 7 1/2 days

8. Ramya can lay railway track between two stations in 16 days. Janani can do the same job in 12 days.
With the help of Rahul, they completes the job in 4 days. How much days does it take for Rahul alone to
complete the work?
Answer : 9 3/5 days
Explanation :
Amount of work Ramya can do in 1 day = 1 / 16
Amount of work Janani can do in 1 day = 1 / 12
Amount of work Ramya, Janani and Rahul can together do in 1 day = 1 / 4
Amount of work Rahul can do in 1 day = ( 1 / 4 ) - [ ( 1 / 16 ) + ( 1 / 12 ) ]
= ( 1 / 4 ) - [ ( 3 + 4 ) / 48 ]
= ( 1 / 4 ) - ( 7 / 48 )
= ( 12 - 7 ) / 48
= 5 / 48
Hence Rahul can do the job = ( 48 / 5 ) days
= 9 3/5 days

9. 4 men can check exam papers in 8 days working 5 hours regularly. What is the total hours when 2 men
will check the double of the papers in 20 days?
Answer : 8 hours
Explanation :
Let a man can do 1 unit of work = 1 hour
Total units of work = 4 * 8 * 5
= 160 units
Now work = 2 * 160
= 320 units
Now 2 men work for 20 days. Let in x hours they have to work per day.
Now total work = 2 * x * 20
= 40x
Total hours ⇒ 40x = 320
x = 320 / 40
= 8 hours

10. A is 30% more efficient than B. How much time will they, working together, take to complete a job
which A alone could have done in 23 days?

3
Answer : 13 days
Explanation :
Ratio of times taken by A and B = 100 : 130 = 10 : 13.
Suppose B takes x days to do the work.
Then, 10 : 13 :: 23 : x
⇒ x = (23 * 13)/10
⇒ x = 299/10
A's 1 day's work = 1/23
B's 1 day's work = 10/299
(A + B)'s 1 day's work = (1/23 + 10/299) = 23/299 = 1/13
So, A and B together can complete the work = 13 days.

11. 4 men can check exam papers in 8 days working 5 hours regularly. What is the total hours when 2 men
will check the double of the papers in 20 days?
Answer : 8 hours
Explanation :
Let a man can do 1 unit of work in 1 hour.
Total units of work = 4 * 8 * 5 = 160 units.
Now work = 2 * 160 = 320 units.
Now 2 men work for 20 days. Let in x hours they have to work per day.
Now total work = 2 * x * 20 = 40 x
40x = 320
So x = 320/40 = 8 hours

12. A is 6 times as fast as B and takes 100 days less to complete a work than B. find the total no of days
taken by A and B to complete the work.
Answer : 120/7 days
Explanation :
Given, A is 6 times as fast as B
So, Ratio of time taken by A and B will be 1:6
Lets assume time taken by A = x.
and time taken by B = 6x.
According to the question, A take 100 days less.
⇒ 6x-x=100
⇒ x=20
So, A takes 20 days and B takes 120 days to complete the work.
A's 1 day work = 1/20.
B's 1 day work = 1/120.
(A+B)'s 1 day work = 1/20 + 1/120 = 7/120.
Therefore, total time taken by A & B = 120/7 days.

13. Sixteen men complete a work in 24 days while 48 children can do it in 16 days. Twelve men started the
work, after 14 days 12 children joined them. In how Many days will all of them together complete the
remaining work?
Answer : 12 days
Explanation :
Work complete by 12 men in 14 days = 12 * 14/(24 * 16) = 7/16
So, Remaining work = 9/16
Work complete by 12 men & 12 children = (12/(24 * 16)) + 12/(48 * 16)
= (1/32 + 1/64)
= 3/64
No. of days = (work complete by 12 men & 12 children / remaining work).
= (3/64)/(9/16)
= 12 days

14. To finish a piece of work, P takes Five times as Q and six times as R. Working together, they can finish
the work in 4 days. Q can do the work alone in:
Answer : 48/5 days
Explanation :
Lets assume Q take x days to finish the work
so P take time = 5x, and
R take time R= 5x/6
Given, They took 4 day to finish the work.
1/5x + 1/x + 6/5x = 1/4
⇒ 12/5x = 1/4
x = 48/5
So, Q can do work alone in 48/5 days.

15. A can do a work in 6 days , B can do a work in 8 days and C can do it in 12 days. B left work after 6
days. For how many number of days should A and C should work together to complete the remaining
work ?
Answer : 1/4
Explanation :
A complete work in 6 days
B complete work in 8days
C complete work in 12 days
B's 1 day work = 1/8
6 day's work = 6/8
remaining work= 1 - 6/8 = 2/8 = 1/4
A+ C 1 day work together = 1/6 + 1/12 = 1/4
so A and C work 1 day to complete remaining work

16. A and B can together finish a work 30 days. They worked together for 20 days and then B left. After
another 20 days, A finished the remaining work. In how many days A alone can finish the work?
Answer : 60 days
Explanation :
(A + B)'s 20 day's work = ( 1/30 * 20 ) = 2/3 .
Remaining work = ( 1 - 2/3 ) = 1/3
Now, 1/3 work is done by A in 20 days.
Therefore, the whole work will be done by A in (20 * 3) = 60 days.

17. Sixteen men can complete a work in twelve days. Twenty four children can complete the same work in
18 days. 12 men and 8 children started working and after eight days three more children joined them. How
many days will they now take to complete the remaining work?
Answer : 4 days
Explanation :
Lets assume Men as "M" and children as "C"
So as per the Question
16M * 12 = 24C * 18
⇒ M/C = 9/4
Total work= 16 * 9 * 12
Lets assume days required to complete remaining work = x days.
(12 * 9 + 8 * 4) * 8 + (12 * 9 + 11 * 4) * x = 16 * 9 * 12
x = 608//152
= 4 days

18. A and B undertake to do a piece of work for Rs. 600. A alone can- do it in 6 days while B alone can do it
in 8 days. With the help of C, they finish it in 3 days. Find the share of each.
Answer : Rs.75

5
Explanation :
C's 1 day's work = 1/3 - (1/6 + 1/8)
A:B:C = Ratio of their 1 day's work = 1/6 : 1/8 : 1/24 = 4:3:1 (by taking LCM)
therefore,
A's Share = Rs.(600 * 4/8) = Rs.300
B's Share = Rs.(600 * 3/8) = Rs.225
C's Share = Rs.[600 - (300 + 225)] = Rs.75

19. A alone can do a piece of work in 6 days and B alone in 8 days. A and B undertook to do it for Rs 3200.
With the help of C, they completed the work in 3 days. How much is to be paid to C?
Answer : Rs 400
Explanation :
A's 1 day work = 1/6
B's 1 day work = 1/8
So, C's 1 day's work = 1/3 - (1/6 + 1/8) = (1/3 - 7/24) = 1/24
So, A's wages : B's wages : C's wages
⇒ 1/6 : 1/8 : 1/24 = 4:3:1
So, C's share = (1/8 * 3200)
= Rs 400.

20. There are 3 trucks A,B and C. A loads at the rate of 10kg/min and B loads at the rate of 13 1/3 kg/min. C
unloads at the rate of 5kg/min. If all the 3 trucks are acting simultaneously, find the time taken to load 2.4
tonnes.
Answer : 130.9 min
Explanation :
A loads in 1 min = 10 kg.
B loads in 1 min = 13 1/3 kg = 40/3 kg.
C unloads in 1 min = 5kg.
So 10 + 40/3 - 5 = 55/3
Hence 1 kg loaded by A, B and C together = 3/55 min
So for 2.4 tonnes to be loaded = 2.4 * 1000 * 3/55
= 130.9 min

21. A can complete a piece of work in 8 hours, B can complete in 10 hours and C in 12 hours. If A,B, C start
the work together but A laves after 2 hours. Find the time taken by B and C to complete the remaining
work.
Answer : 2 1/11 days
Explanation :
A, B, C 1 hour work is = 1/8 + 1/10 + 12 = 37/120
A, B, C work together for 2 hours,
so, A, B, C 2 hours work is: (37/120) * 2 = 37/60
remaining work =1 - 37/60 = 23/60 (23/60 work is done by B and C together)
B, C 1 hour work is = 1/10 + 1/12 = 11/60
23/60 hours work done by B, C = (11/60) * (60/23) =11/23
So B & C and complete the remaining work = 2 1/11 days

22. Amit want to make a 1000 m long wall with in 50 days he made a decision to hire 56 man however after
27 days amit realized that team was only able to make 448 meter wall find out the additional number of
man that amit should employ as a mean of finishing work on the stipulated time.
Answer : 25
Explanation :
It take 56 * 27 = 1512 labour to complete 448 m
Therefoe labour required to complete 1m = 3.375
Now labour required to complete remaining 552 m = 552 * 3.375 =1863

6
and days remaining is 23.
So labours required in one day =1863/23 = 81
So additional labours required is = 81- 56 = 25

23. A group of workers can do a piece of work in 24 days. However as 7 of them were absent it took 30
days to complete the work. How many people actually worked on the job to complete it?
Answer : 28
Explanation :
Let the original number of workers in the group be 'x'
Therefore, actual number of workers = x-7.
We know that the number of manhours required to do the job is the same in both the cases.
Therefore, x (24) = (x-7) * 30
24x = 30x - 210
6x = 210
x = 35
So, the actual number of workers who worked to complete the job
=x-7
= 35 -7
= 28

24. A is twice as good a workman as B and together they finish a piece of work in 18 days.In how many
days will A alone finish the work?
Answer : 27 days
Explanation :
Given A is twice as good a workman as B
So (A’s 1 day’s work): (B’s 1 day’s work) = 2:1
(A + B)’s 1 day’s work = 1/18
Divide 1/18 in the ratio 2:1
Therefore A’s 1 day’s work = (1/18 * 2/3) = 1/27
Hence, A alone can finish the work in 27 days.

25. A and B can do a piece of work in 12 days ; B and C can do it in 20 days. In how many days will A, B
and C finishes it working all together? Also, find the number of days taken by each to finish it working
alone?
Answer : 60 days
Explanation :
Given (A + B)’s one day’s work = 1/12 ---- (1)
(B + C)’s one day’s work = 1/15 ------- (2)
and (A + C)’s one day’s work = 1/20. -------- (3)
By eq. 1, 2 and 3
2(A + B + C)’s one day’s work = (1/12 + 1/15 + 1/20) = 1/5
⇒ (A + B + C)’s one day’s work = 1/10.
⇒ A, B and C together can finish the work in 10 days.
Now, A’s one day’s work
= [(A + B + C)’s one day’s work] - [(B+C)’s one day’s work]
= 1/10 -1/15
= 1/30.
Therefore, A alone can finish the work in 30 days.
Similarly, B’s 1 day’s work = (1/10 - 1/20) = 1/20
Therefore, B alone can finish the work in 20 days
And, C’s 1 day’s work= (1/10 - 1/12) = 1/60
Therefore, C alone can finish the work in 60 days

7
26. 2 men and 3 boys can do a piece of work in 10 days while 3 men and 2 boys can do the same work in 8
days. In how many days can 2 men and 1 boy do the work?
Answer : 12 1/2 days
Explanation :
Lets assume 1 man’s 1 day’s work = x
and 1 boy’s 1 day’s work = y.
⇒ 2x + 3y = 1/10 ---- (1)
and 3x + 2y = 1/8. ----- (2)
By Solving eq. (1) and (2)
x = 7/200 and
y = 1/100
Therefore (2 men +1 boy)’s 1 day’s work = (2 * 7/200 + 1 * 1/100)
= 16/200
= 2/25
So, 2 men and 1 boy together can finish the work in 25/2 = 12 1/2 days

27. One man can do a piece of work in 10 days. one boy join him & he completes the work in 6 days . If the
man gets 50 rs for his work then what will be the share of the boy ?
Answer : Rs.20
Explanation :
Lets assume Boy 1 day work = 1/x
Work of Man in 1 day = 1/10
Work finished in 6 days
⇒ (1/10)+(1/x)=1/6
⇒ 1/x = 1/6 - 1/10
⇒ x = 15
So Ratio of their work (Man & Boy) = 1/10:1/15 = 3:2
Then Boy's share = 2 * 50/(3 + 2) = Rs.20

28. A and B can complete a work in 15 days and 10 days respectively. They started doing the work together
but after 2 days B had to leave and A alone completed the remaining work. Find how many days the whole
work was completed?
Answer : 12 days
Explanation :
(A+ B)'s 1 day's work = (1/15 + 1/10) = 5/30 = 1/6
So work done by A and B in 2 days = (1/6 * 2) = 1/3
so Remaining work = (1 - 1/3) = 2/3
A 1 day work = 1/15
Now,
1/15 work is done by A in = 1 day
2/3 work will be done by A = (15 * 2/3) = 10 days.
so total time required = (10 + 2) = 12 days

29. A, B and C together can complete a piece of work in 10 days. All the three started working at it together
and after 4 days A left. Then B and C together completed the work in 10 more days. A alone could complete
the work in :
Answer : 25 days
Explanation :
(A, B and C) 1 day work = 1/10
Work done by (A, B and C) in 4 days = 4 * 1/10 = 2/5
Left work = (1 - 2/5) = 3/5
3/5 part of work is done by (B and C) = 10 days
(B + C)'s 1 day's work = 3/50
So Whole work will be done by (B and C) = (10 * 5/)3 = 50/3 days

8
⇒ (B + C)'s 1 day work = 3/50
A's 1 day's work = (1/10 - 3/50)
= 2/50
= 1/25
So A alone could complete the work in 25 days

30. A and B can finish a piece of work in 20 days .B and C in 30 days and C and A in 40 days. In how many
days will A alone finish the job
Answer : 48 days
Explanation :
Find one day work for all three
(A + B)'s 1 day work = 1/20 ----(1)
(B + C)'s 1 day work = 1/30 ----(2)
and (C + A)'s 1 day work = 1/40 ----(3)
2(A + B + C) 1 day work = (1/20 + 1/30 + 1/40)
⇒ (A + B + C) = (6 + 4 + 3)/2 * 120
⇒ (A + B + C) = 13/240 -----------(4)
By eq. (2) and (4)
A + 1/30 = 13/240
⇒ A = 13/240 - 1/30
= (13 - 8)/240
= 1/48
then A's 1 day work = 1/48
so A alon can finish the job = 48 days

31. A and B can do a piece of work in 45 days and 40 days respectively. They began to do the work
together but A leaves after some days and then B completed the remaining work in 23 days. The number of
days after which A left the work was :
Answer : 9 days
Explanation :
A's 1 day work = 1/45
B's 1 day work = 1/40
so (A + B)'s 1 day's work = (1/45 + 1/40) = 17/360
Work done by B in 23 days = (1 * 23/40)= 23/40
Remaining work = (1 - 23/40) = 17/40
Now, 17/360 work was done by (A + B) = 1 day.
17/40 part of work was done by (A + B) = (1 * 360/17 * 17/40) = 9 days
A left after 9 days.

32. A, B and C can complete a work separately in 24, 36 and 48 days respectively. They started together but
C left after 4 days of start and A left 3 days before the completion of the work. In how many days will the
work be completed ?
Answer : 15 days
Explanation :
(A + B + C)'s 1 day's work = (1/24 + 1/36 + 1/48) = 13/144
Work done by (A + B + C) in 4 days = 4 * 13/144 = 13/36
Work done by B in 3 days = 1/36 * 3=1/12
Left work = [1 - (13/36 + 1/12)] = 5/9
(A + B)'s 1 day's work = (1/24 + 1/36) = 5/72
5/72 part of work is done by A and B = 1 day
5/9 work done by A & B = (72/5 * 5/9) = 8 days
So, total time taken = (4 + 3 + 8) days = 15 days

33. A and B complete a work togather in 8 days.If 'A' alone can do it in 12 days.Then how many day 'B' will
take to complete the work?
Answer : 24 days
Explanation :
A & B one day work = 1/8
A alone one day work = 1/12
B alone one day work = (1/8 - 1/12)
= ( 3/24 - 2/24)
⇒ B one day work = 1/24
so B can complete the work in 24 days.

34. A and B can do a piece of work in 30 days, while B and C can do the same work in 24 days and C and A
in 20 days. They all work together for 10 days when B and C leave. How many days more will A take to
finish the work ?
Answer : 18 days
Explanation :
(A & B)'s 1 day work = 1/30
(B & C)'s 1 day work = 1/24
(C & A)'s 1 day work = 1/20
so 2 (A + B + C)'s 1 day's work = (1/30 + 1/24 + 1/20) = 15/120 = 1/8
⇒ (A + B + C)'s 1 day's work = 1/16
Work done by A, B and C in 10 days = (10*1/16) = 5/8
so left work = (1 – 5/8) = 3/8
A's 1 day's work (1/16 – 1/24) = 1/48
⇒ 1/48 part of work is done by A = 1 day
So, 3/8 part of work will be done by A = (48 * 3/8) = 6 * 3 = 18 days.

35. P can finish a work in 18 days. Q can finish the same work in 15 days. Q worked for 10 days and left the
job. how many days does P alone need to finish the remaining work?
Answer : 6 days
Explanation :
Work done by P in 1 day = 1 / 18
Work done by Q in 1 day = 1 / 15
Work done by Q in 10 days = 10 / 15
=2/3
Remaining work = 1 - ( 2 / 3 )
=(3-2)/3)
=1/3
Number of days in which P can finish the remaining work = ( 1 / 3 ) / ( 1 / 18 )
= 18 / 3
= 6 days

36. 40 men can do a piece of work in 15 days. How many men would be required to do the same work in
20 days ?
Answer : 30 men
Explanation :
40 men can do a piece of work in 15 days.
Required number of men = ( 40 * 15 ) / 20
= 600 / 20
= 30 men

37. If 18 persons can build a wall 140 m long in 42 days, find the number of days that 30 persons will take
to complete a similar wall 100 m long?
Answer : 18 days

10
Explanation :
Length = 140 : 100 :: 42 : x
Persons = 30 : 18 :: 42 : x
⇒ ( 140 * 30 * x ) = ( 100 * 18 * 42 )
x = ( 100 * 18 * 42 ) / ( 140 * 30 )
x=6*3
x = 18 days

38. If 5 men or 9 women can do a piece of work in 19 days, then in how many days will 3 men and 6
women do the same work?
Answer : 15
Explanation :
Let the required number of days be x.
∴ 5 men = 9 women
3 men = ( ( 9 / 5 ) * 3 ) women
= ( 27 / 5 ) women
3 men and 6 women = ( ( 27 / 5 ) + 6 ) Women
= ( 57 / 5 ) Women
Now, More women, Less days ( ∴ Indirect Proportion )
⇒ ( 57 / 5 ) : 9 :: 19 : x
⇒ ( 57 / 5 ) * x = 9 * 19
⇒ x = ( 9 * 19 * 5 ) / 57
x=5*3
x = 15

39. If a work is completed in 12 days by 16 men, how long will 32 men take to do the same piece of work ?
Answer : 6 days
Explanation :
Men = 16 : 32
Days 12 : x
⇒ 16 : 32 :: x : 12 ( Inverse propostion, as the number of men increace, the days will decrease )
32x = 16 * 12
x = ( 16 * 12 ) / 32
x = 6 days

40. A and B can together finish a work in 30 days. They worked together for 20 days and then B left. After
another 20 days, A finished the remaining work. In how many days A alone can finish the job?
Answer : 60 days
Explanation :
( A + B )′s 20 days work = [ ( 1 / 30 ) * 20 ]
=2/3
Remaining work = [ 1 - ( 2 / 3 ) ]
=(3-2)/3
=1/3
⇒ 1 / 3 work is done by A in 20 days
Whole work will be done by A = ( 20 * 3 )
= 60 days

41. Ammu works twice as fast as Aruna. If Aruna alone can complete a work in 12 days, Ammu and Aruna
can finish the work in howmany days ?
Answer : 4 days
Explanation :
Work done by Q in 1 day = 1 / 12
Work done by P in 1 day = 2 * ( 1 / 12 )

11
=1/6
Work done by P and Q in 1 day = ( 1 / 12 ) + ( 1 / 6 )
= ( 1 + 2 ) / 12
= 3 / 12
=1/4
P and Q can finish the work in 4 days.

42. Kumar can do a work in 3 days while Dinesh can do the same work in 2 days. Both of them finish the
work together and get Rs. 150. What is the share of Kumar?
Answer : Rs. 60
Explanation :
Kumar′s wages : Dinesh′s wages = Kumar′s 1 day′s work : Dinesh′s 1 day′s work
=(1/3):(1/2)
=2:3
Total ratio = 2 + 3
=5
Kumar′s share = Rs. ( ( 2 / 5 ) * 150 )
= Rs. 60

43. A and B together can do a piece of work in 30 days. A having worked for 16 days, B finishes the
remaining work alone in 44 days. In how many days shall B finish the whole work alone ?
Answer : 60 days
Explanation :
A's 1 day's work = x
and B's 1 day's work = y
So (A & B) 1 day work = 1/30 => x+y =1/30
30x + 30y = 1 -------- (1)
So 16x + 44y = 1 -------- (2)
By Solving above two equations,
x = 1/60 and y = 1/60
B's 1 day's work = 1/60
Hence, B alone shall finish the whole work in 60 days.

44. 9 laboures can complete the construction of a wall in 18 days. How many less days will 12 laboures take
to complete the same wall ?
Answer : 13.5
Explanation :
Work done by a single person = 1 / ( 9 * 18 )
= 1 / 162
Work done by 12 people = 12 / 162
Time taken to finish work = 162 / 12
= 13.5

45. A man travels 35 km partly at 4 km/hr and at 5 km/hr. If he covers former distance at 5 km/hr and later
distance at 4 km/hr, he could cover 2 km more in the same time. The time taken to cover the whole distance
at original rate is
Answer : 8hrs
Explanation :
Suppose the man covers first distance in x hrs. and second distance in y hrs.
Then , 4x + 5y = 35 and 5x +4y = 37
Solving these equation , we get
X = 5 and y = 3
Total time taken = (5 + 3) hrs = 8hrs

46. A can do a piece of work in 4 days and B can complete the same work in 12 days. What is the number of
days required to do the same work together ?
Answer : 3 days
Explanation :
A's 1 day's work = 1/4
B's 1 day's work = 1/12
(A+B)'s day ' s work = 1/4 + 1/12
= (3 + 1)/12
= 4/12 = 1/3
Days required by A and B together to do the work
= 1 / (A + B )' s day' s work
= 3 days

47. A and B together can complete a piece of work in 4 days. If A alone can complete the same work in 12
days, in how many days can B alone complete that work?
Answer : 6 days
Explanation :
( A + B )′s 1 day′s work = 1 / 4
A′s 1 day′s work = 1 / 12
B′s 1 day′s work = [ ( 1 / 4 ) - ( 1 / 12 ) ]
= ( 3 - 1 ) / 12
= 2 / 12
=1/6
Hence B alone can complete the work in 6 days.

48. 36 men can complete a piece of work in 18 days. In how many days will 27 men complete the same
work?
Answer : 24 days
Explanation :
Let the required number of days be x.
⇒ Less men, More days ( ∴ Indirect propportion )
⇒ 27 : 36 :: 18 : x
⇒ 27x = 36 * 18
x = ( 36 * 18 ) / 27
x=4*6
x = 24 days

49. 2 men can complete a piece of work in 6 days. 2 women can complete the same piece of work in 9 days,
where as 3 children can complete the same piece of work in 8 days. 3 women and 4 children worked
together for 1 day. If only men were to finish the remaining work in 1 day, how many total men would be
required ?
Answer : 8 men
Explanation :
(2 * 6) men = 18 women = 24 children
2 men = 3 women = 4 children
3 women + 4 children = 4 men
Part of work done in 1 day by 4
men = 1 / 3
Remaining ( 2 / 3 ) work will be finished by 8 men in 1 day.

50. Three men or eight boys can do a piece of work in 17 days. How many days will two men and six boys
together take to finish the same work ?
Answer : 12 days
Explanation :

13
3 men = 8 boys
2 m = (8/3) * 2 = 16/3 boys.
(2 men + 6 boys) = (16/2) + 6 boys = 34/3boys
8 boys can complete the work in 17 days
⇒ 34/3boys boys can complete the work in x days
⇒ (34/3) : 8 = 17 : x
⇒ x = (17 * 8 * 3)/34
⇒ x = 12 days
