This lesson plan is for a 2nd grade English Language Arts class. It addresses asking and answering questions about key details in an informational text. Students will listen to a teacher read a book aloud and identify who, what, when, where, why and how details. They will then create a mind map using the Bubbl.us website to organize these details with the book title as the main bubble and each key detail in a sub-bubble. Creating the graphic organizer allows students to display their understanding in a format they can follow while engaging with educational technology. The lesson is assessed through a teacher rubric and is designed for one English Language Arts period.

Lesson Idea Name: Reading Informational
Content Area: English Language Arts Grade Level(s): 2nd Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
ELAGSE2RI1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
Technology Standard Addressed:
6A: Foster a culture where students take ownership of their learning goals and outcomes in both independent and group settings. Selected Technology Tool: Bubbl.us
The technology tool I selected for this lesson idea, Bubbl.us, will support all of my students. This lesson idea follows the representation, action/expression, and engagement frameworks. The content is being presented through multiple media forms, is allows students to choose the way that they display the information in the graphic organizer, and the technology component will keep the students engaged throughout the lesson. This lesson will enhance the learning experience for all students in the classroom because they can create a product that displays the content in a way that is easy for them to follow and understand. Lesson idea implementation: The teacher will begin the lesson by reading a book out loud to the entire class. The students will be responsible for picking out the key details of the text. They will be listening for the: who, what, when, where, why, and how of the story. Once the students have identified these details, they will be given a laptop. The students will be asked to go to the website, Bubbl.us and create a mind map of the story. The main bubble will be the title of the book. Each sister bubble will represent one of the key details identified during the story. This lesson should only take the time of the ELA block for one day. Once, the students finish their mind maps, have them print them and hand them in to you. The students will be assessed on a rubric provided by the teacher where they can also find any feedback given. Reflective Practice: The activities I have created could impact student learning in many ways. When the students create their mind maps, learning takes place in the content area of the lesson but in using technology as well. This lesson could easily be extended to learn about character development, setting, etc.
