THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
Education plays a paramount role in the modern technological world. It is
an important tool to succeed in life. It also opens various doors to opportunities of
achieving and also helps individuals to be confident about themselves.1
Education is the backbone in producing future responsible and productve citizens
of the country. Furtheremore, the society is also using it as an instrument to bring
the desired kinds of citizens and its goal is both improved and ferociously put at
risk with social media around.
Social media is computer mediated technologies that facilitate the creation
and sharing of information, ideas, career interest and other forms of expressions
through virtual communities and networks. There are many things the social
networking technologies allow a person to do. For an instance, social networking
sites allow one to share any form of a data ranging from a simple image to small
parts or links of websites, which contain a vast amount of information. Social
networking technologies also allow one to share thoughts or ideas. It helps a
person at one end the world connects and exchange ideas with a person at the
other end. Thus, social networking sites are not just a source of entertainment
but are influential too.2
By design, social media is an internet-based technology and offers users
easy electronic communication of personal information and other content, such

as videos, photos, and the like. Users engage with social media via computer,
table or smart phone via web-based software or web application, often utilizing it
for messaging.3
Social media are online technology platforms that help to connect people
together far and near throughout the world. It is used to build relationship and
connection among people. On the other hand, the use of social media to
students helps to have access to basic information as quick as possible.
There are positive effects to students that entailed along social media. It
facilitates online learning, gives access to quality information, enhances student
academic performance and increases their knowledge through data and
information gathering, and also helps students build good relationship with one
another. Conversely, social media has its fair share of negative effects to
students. It may lead to wasting of time because many students find it difficult to
go to about their normal life without making use of social media. Social media
can cause distraction because many students stick to their gadget without
concentrating on their study. It can also lead to social problems and cause health
problems.4
Because of the wide spread usage of social media, the researchers aimed
to find out its effects to the academic performance of the Senior High School
students of Cotmon National High School. Furtheremore, the researchers
determined the extent of using social media and the evidences of the effects of
social media usage are observed among the students.

Statement of the Problem
This study aims to determine the effects of Social Media on Academic
Performances of Cotmon National High School Senior High students for the
Academic year 2018-2019. Specifically, it will seek to answer to the following
questions:
1. What is the profile of the Senior High school students of Cotmon National High
School in terms of:
1.1 age 1.3 number of family members
1.2 sex 1.4 family income
2. What are the effects of social media on the academic performance of Cotmon
NHS students?
3. What is the extent does social media usage affect the performance of Cotmon
NHS students?
4. What evidences of the effects of social media usage are observed among the
students?
Scope and Delimitation of the Study
The researchers conducted this study to determine the effects of social
media on Senior High students of Academic Year 2018-2019. The researchers
looked into the profile of the selected Senior High students of Cotmon National
High School in terms of age, sex, number of family members; family income; the
amount of time they totally spend daily in using it; their reasons for using social
media; and the effects of using social media on their academic performance.

Other topics that beyond to the effects of social media on the academic
performance are not anymore concern of the study. The respondents of this
study were the Senior High students of Cotmon National High School under the
Academic Track during school year 2018-2019. Technological Vocational and
Livelihood track and Junior High students of the same school are excluded as the
respondents of this study.
Significance of the Study
The researchers proposed this study in order to determine the effects of
social media on academic performance of Cotmon National High School Senior
High students under the Academic Track of Academic Year 2018-2019. This
study is highly significant and useful to the following:
Students. As beneficiaries of this study, the result will make them aware on how
social media can affect academic performance.
Respondents. They will be provided with information as to how social media can
affect the students’ academic performance. This study will provide knowledge to
Senior High students about the possible consequences of using social media.
Parents. Through this study, parents will be given essential information which
may be useful to them in addressing their children’s needs and behaviours in
their studies.
Teachers. This study will give teachers additional information about the effects of
social media to those students who are using it.

Future researchers. This will serve as a supplementary guide for future
researchers which will guide them to conduct a more integrated and
comprehensive study on effects of social media to Senior High students.
