Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Social media, such as Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram are all

highly used social media platforms. In addition, social media usage of students

has the potential to affect grades, social-skills, and time, but it could be positive

or negative effect.

Moreover, the importance of communication continues worlwide

penetration of computers and the internet has resulted online, where people can

communicate. Classmate.com was the first social media networking sites

founded in 1995 (Meltzer & Philips, 2009). Communication allows us to form

relationship with others, which was defined as "social" level needs by Abraham

Maslow's heirachy needs (Dessler, 2008). In the same manner, it includes the

multiple psychological effects that could result from spending too much time on

Facebook and other social media sites. Negative effects include; teens who used

Facebook frequently may become narcissistic. The world's largest social

networking site; Facebook, recent studies shows that 90% of 18-19 years old in

USA used social media networking and a high percentage between 85% and

99% of students used Facebook (Brenner, 2013, Matney & Borland, 2009).

However, Facebook use and multitasking showed a significant difference and

impact on GPA within different level of undergraduate students in USA (Junco,

2015). With the advancement of technology, communication has become easier.

Nowadays, people can spread their thoughts and opinions with a couple of

click via social networks; the needs to belong are a powerful, fundamental, and

extremely persuasive motivation (Bacmeister & Leary, 1995). The importance of

belonging can be understood fron the previous statement and it is mentioned taht

social media networks satisfy the used of belong of individual (Krasnova, et al,

2008, Seidman, 2013). People spend most of their time on social media

networking sites. Middle-aged persons were attracted towards it and there is no

effect to gender on it. This information states that social media has very much

affected one lifestyle.

Social media network tools afford students and institutions with multiple

opportunities to improve learning methods. Through this networks, you can

incorporate social media plugins thay enable sharing and interaction. In addition,

social media is also a medium wheee students can establish beneficial

connections for their awareness. According to Nadkarni and Holfman (2012),

Facebook is also used for self-presentation while Pèluchette and Karl (2010),

further mentioned that some students share in appropriate materials on

Facebook in order to get the scale that was used. Academical achievement were

highly competative were students are prefer in using social media as based

foundation of knowledge.

Academic Achievements defined as the higher rank of high educational

teaching methods. Through this statement, Junior High School students studied

hard to achieve academic, but stress is further encountered, mental stress affect

the encouragement of students. Students nowadays, prefer on using social

media in every homework and other project that sites in different social media

networking. However, most of students are prefer using social media as gaming

sites instead of learning sites. Moreover, academical achievements ate highly

affected, the upgrade of old PC means adding latest on new online games on

sites.

Students used Facebook as the main communication was they can

communicate with the group studies like reports and etc. But in the whole

process, Facebook site is used by student as a domain of relationship, adding

other people where they can communicate in the same process. The term

"unfriend" was added to Oxford dictionary, defined as to remove someone as a

friend on a social media networking sites as Facebook (Gross, 2009). For a

reason, this usage of students and to examine behaviours of students on social

media, especially Facebook.

The researcher has come along the study of Junior High School students

that deals the affects of social media on their daily lives, and also the affect of

social media as the domain of academic achievements of students in Junior High

School. Attitude, perspectively engage in students as social media users. In the

reason that researcher is interested to determine whether social media helps

Junior High School students.

Statement of the Problem

This study will be conducted to answer the question whether social

networking usage affects the academic achievement and attitude of Junior High

School students. Specifically, this study will be conducted to seek answers on the

following questions:

1. What is the level of social network usage of junior high school learners in

terms of:

1.1 academic;

1.2 socialization;

1.3 informativeness; and

1.4 entertainment?

2. What is the level of academic achievement of junior high school learners in

terms of:

2.1 Grades?

3. What is the level of attitude of junior high school learners in terms of:

3.1 affective component;

3.2 behavioral component; and

3.3 cognitive component?

4. Is there a significant relationship between:

4.1 social networking usage and academic achievement; and

4.2 social networking usage and attitude?

5. Is there a significant difference in the level of social network usage in

academic achievement and attitude of junior high school learners when grouped

according to:

5.1 gender; and

5.2 daily time spent in the internet?

6. Does social networking usage influence academic achievement and attitude of

junior high school learners?

Research Hypotheses

The hypotheses of the study will be tested at 0.05 level of significance:

1. There is no significant relationship between social networking usage and

academic achievement and attitude of junior high school students.

2. There is no factor in social networking usage that affects the academic

achievement and attitude of students

3. There is no significant difference on level of social networking usage and

academic achievement and attitude of students.

Significance of the Study

It is anticipated that the results and findings from the study would add to

the means of information about the effects of social networking usage to

academic achievement and attitude of student. The study would be an immense

importance to teachers, parents, students, and for future researchers.

For administrators. The results would help administrator to improve their

knowledge in guiding and informing their students about the accurate

management of social networking sites. It would also help them train their

students the correct attitude in using of social networks.

For parents. The results would be a great help for parents. It would help

them have the idea of the different effects: the positive and negative effects of

social networking usage on the academic achievement and attitude of their

children. Through the ideas of the different effects, they can teach their children

to become more responsible student and more responsible social network user.

For students. The study would help them develop and enhance their

knowledge about the influences of social media in one’s self. The results of this

study would help students to manage the usage of social media to have a greater

achievement in academic that will lift them higher to their goals.

For future researchers. The study would be big help for them. It would

make them easier to understand and find out the factors of social media affecting

the academic and attitude of students. The study would enhance their knowledge

and broaden their minds to become better researchers.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study primarily focuses on secondary school. The scope of the study

involves the academic achievement and attitude of Junior High School in Lupon

National Comprehensive High School, Ilangay Lupon Davao Oriental and Lupon

Vocational High School, Poblacion, Lupon, Davao Oriental. This study is

conducted on July 2019.

The limitation of the study covers the influence of social media on the

Academic Achievement and Attitude of grade 9 and grade 10 students. This

study only focuses about the influence of social media to the Junior High School

student of Lupon National Comprehensive High School and Lupon Vocational

High School. The student who frequently uses different types of social media

would be our main target in this study. Students who have social media accounts

but seldom use it would not be involve and included as respondent.The study

involves money, time and technologies that can be used for editing and revising.

Definition of Terms

Academic - relating to or associated with the performance in courses of study.

Academic Achievement - Academic achievement represents outcomes of

student’s performance that indicates the extent of student’s accomplished goals.

(Steinmayr, R. 2017).

Affective Component – it is the person’s feeling or emotion about an object

(McLeod, 2018).

Age - length of time or year a person existed.

Attitude – in this study, attitude refers to the attitude of students towards

learning.

Behavioral Component – the way the attitude of a person have influences the

way a person behaves or act (McLoed, 2018)

Cognitive Component – it is the attitude that involves a person’s belief,

knowledge towards an object (McLeod, 2018)

Entertainment - a form of activity that give pleasure and joy to an audience. It is

an activity that attracts the attention and interest of audience.

Gender - refers to male or female, which a person’s characteristic, interest and

behavior are deemed ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ (Anderson, 2016).

Grades - measurement or mark of student’s performance.

Informativeness - state of being informative.

Social Network – Social Network is a website where people share information,

photos, and videos (Rouse, 2013).

Socialization - is the process in which a person was taught about the norms,

customs, values and roles of the society. Socialization means a person learns to

become a member of a group, community or society (Cole, 2019).

Time Spent on Internet - how long does a person spend on social media.
