Title: VTA28-G5 Frequency Conversion

Model(s) C700 D5, C600 D6

Background/Description:
It has come to our attention that there have been several incidents of engine failures when
a VTA28-G5 engine is being operated at 60Hz whilst configured for operation at 50Hz and
vice versa.

Corrective Actions:
This Product Support Bulletin details the parts that need to be changed/replaced to carry
out the 50Hz to 60Hz conversion or vice-versa.

When carrying out this conversion, observe all applicable Health and Safety guidelines.
Health and Safety information can be found in the documentation specific to the generator
set.

Warranty Statement:
This PSB does not include any authorized warrantable work.

VTA28-G5 Frequency Conversion
Summary
The VTA28 G5 is a preconfigured engine that is designed to run at a single operating frequency (i.e.
50Hz or 60Hz). To change the operating frequency of the VTA28 G5, engine hardware changes and
software updates are required.

An Authorised Cummins Distributor must complete the conversion to prevent voiding the warranty.

Please note: Unauthorised modification of a Cummins engine / generator set may void factory
warranty (see Warranty Manual A040W374) and could lead to product and property damage,
personal liability, as well as significant health and safety risks. Please refer to Bulletin ‘CPGF-S-
00000196-0’ for further information on Product Modification Authorisation.

Prior to Conversion
Before the engine is reconfigured, EBU approval must be requested. To request approval, the Engine
Modification Form must be filled out in accordance to the desired changes to the engine. The Engine
Modification Form can be found on QSOL in the ‘Warranty Documents’ listed in the ‘Related
Information’ section, which can be found under the ‘Warranty’ tab. The completed form must be
sent to emea.customerassistance@cummins.com

Once approval is received from EBU, an appropriate TSR has to be raised by the party carrying out
the conversion. The TSR has to be raised and escalated to the Factory. It must contain the following
information:

• GSN of the Generator

• ESN of the Engine
• Current Operating Frequency
• Desired Operating Frequency
• Engine Modification Approval received from EBU

Once the Factory has received the TSR, any additional requirements will be communicated to the
Distributor. These requirements may include feature codes, software/calibration updates etc.

Additionally, the Distributor has to order a new Generator Data Plate detailing the new operating
frequency. To order a new Data Plate, please contact cpgk.customer.quality@cummins.com. Please
note, a new Generator Data Plate is not required in case of a G Drive application.

Conversion Steps
Parts required for VTA28 G5 to operate at 1500 RPM (50 Hz Output):

DA 5073 Viscous Vibration Damper

V 973 Fuel Pump Code
FR 5212 50 Hz Fuel Rating Reference (data plate)
NOTE: DA 5073 contains Vibration Damper Part# 3077985 which is restricted for the engine to run at
1500 RPM only.
Parts required for VTA28 G5 to operate at 1800 RPM (60 Hz Output):

DA 5014 Rubber (Elastic) Damper

FC V 971 Fuel Pump Code
FR 5211 60 Hz Fuel Rating Reference (data plate)
AC 5121 60 Hz compatible Air Cleaner (Normal Duty)
AC 5115 60 Hz compatible Air Cleaner (Heavy Duty)
NOTE: The AC 5115 Heavy Duty Air Cleaner is highly recommended for both 50Hz and 60Hz
applications

All damper mounting cap screws must be checked for damage or permanent elongation and
changed if required. If in doubt, please proceed to replace these bolts. Please see Figure 1 and Figure
2 for appropriate bolt Part Numbers.

Conversion Steps:

1. Fuel Pump Calibration

Change and calibrate Auto Governor Spring and Auto Governor Plunger to Fuel Pump
code V971 (for 60 Hz operating frequency) or V973 (for 50Hz operating Frequency)

2. Damper
Install Viscous Damper DA5073 (for 50Hz operating frequency, see Figure 1) or Rubber
Damper DA5014 (for 60Hz operating frequency, see Figure 2).

3. Air Cleaner
Install the AC5115 Heavy Duty Air Cleaner.
