HV Surge Generator

Locate Cable Faults Easily & Quickly With

CFL Series ...
CFL SG 3210/15/20
The Product
Fault occurrence on underground cables cannot be avoided due to many factors in prevailing conditions.
Long outage of a cable from service results in heavy loss of revenue to the power distribution company, pro-
duction loss to industries and unpleasant condition to general public. It is therefore necessary to restore the
supply in minimum possible time. This calls for appropriate instruments fulfilling all the requirement of the job.
Surge generator is the backbone of underground cable fault locating system. It is used with a pre-locator for
fault distance measurement to search a defined area of the cable lay.
It is also used for pin-pointing the fault for producing thumping sound
at fault spot to be located by a pin-pointer instrument in a short time.
Apart from the above standard features, it can also be offered with
optional functions for the following:
• Burn Down Mode
• DC Hipot Test Mode
• Sheath Fault Location Mode
Addition of the above modes makes it a compact fault locating
system.

Application
The instrument offers full specified energy at each selectable range of 0-8, 0-16 and 0-32 KV for the
following functions:
• Pre-location of fault distance:
• Impulse Current Mode (ICM) : The surge generator produces Current Transients at the fault
point and captures them on its Linear Coupler for fault distance analysis on appropriate fault
pre-locator.
• Secondary Impulse Mode (SIM) : The surge generator plays vital role in conjunction with a SIM
filter and pre-locator instrument to produce arc at the fault point for short term. The standing arc
at fault point facilitates easy and accurate fault distance
• Pin-pointing:
• Pin-pointing the exact spot of the fault is the main application of Surge Generator. It produces
thumping sound at the fault point on the cable. Exact fault spot is located with the help of surge
wave receiver and suitable ground microphones.
The surge generator produces magnetic waves on the cable at each thump. It helps in
correlating the acoustic and magnetic waves for getting guidance for distance to fault during
pin-pointing.
Additional modes offered optionally have following applications
• Burn Down:
• This application is used to alter the fault condition to get fault distance. For example, it can be
used to create a carbon bridge across high resistance nature fault for easy pre-location.
Similarly, an unstable fault can be conditioned for getting fault distance. It can also be applied
to dry the wet faults.
• DC Hipot Test Mode:
• This mode offers insulation test facility required for the cable under test or any other job such as
bus bar/ any other object insulation test. It is provided with settable timer to subject the cable/
object under test for specified time.
• Sheath Fault Locator:
• Sheath faults on underground HT,LT, single or Multi core unshielded cables and unearthed
system cables having faults between the conductor and the mass of earth cannot be located
with conventional fault locating instruments. The return current path is through mass of earth,
hence the scope of employing instrument for fault location is limited to step voltage method
carried out by creating pool of potential on ground surface,

current is indicated on analog current meter.
• Input supply fuse protection
• MCB trip control under overload condition
• Key lock switch to protect against unauthorized operation
• Variac zero, HV switches and output cable plug safety interlocks. The HV source will not switch
ON until all conditions are safely met.
• The HV source will automatically trips in case of overheat
• Emergency off switch to trip the HV source and stop the test.
• In case the test mode and voltage switch is not properly set, the instrument will show error
indication. HV source is turned on only on proper settings.
• Automatic discharge after test.
Burn Down Mode (Optional):
• Selectable output voltage ranges of 0-8KV, 0-16KV and 0-32KV
