Management module - MF/SNMP
○
○
○
○
○
○
○
○
○
○
○
SNMP management module for MF/SUB subrack. Supports a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet interface to connect to the management
○
system, one console to connect an asynchronous terminal with the 57600bps, 8, N, 1 configuration, and an output and input
○
○
connector for dry contact alarms. The SNMP management module communicates with all the subrack modems by means of an
○
internal RS485 serial channel, which allows for accessing each local or remote channel independently.
○
○
It featues four indicator leds with the following functions:
○
○
PWR:: power supply.
○
○
ETH:: Ethernet port activity and collision.
○
○
485:: internal 485 bar activity.
○
○
ST:: board status.
○
○
It is possible to perform the initial configuration through the management board console. The commands are described in
○
the management module manual. It is also possible to directly configure and monitor the local and remote modems, which is
○
○
done as follows:
○
○
• Once the management board is started, the “MetroSNMP login:>” prompt appears on the console requesting the
○
○
factory default user, which is “metrosnmp”.
○
○
• After typing in the user the default factory password is requested, “password:>” , which is “digitel”.
○
○
○

• After this, the prompt “MetroSNMP>” appears on the console, indicating that the board is able to receive commands
for its configuration or for accessing the modems.
• By typing “open local 3”, direct access is possible to the modem inserted in slot 3 of the subrack, where it is
possible to type in any configuration or monitoring command. After the command, the console prompt changes
indicating with which equipment it is connected (in this case, “MetroSNMP:local:3>”).
• For the remote modem connected to the modem in slot 3 of the subrack, the operation is analog, and the command
“open remote 3” must be used. At the prompt, “MetroSNMP:remote:3>” appears.
• To return to the management board console, simply type “close”, and the prompt returns to “MetroSNMP>”.
To configure the operation mode, the MF/SUB management module has a dip-switch that, in normal operation, should
have all keys in the ON position (opposite direction to the board edge). To operate in any different module, see the management
module manual.
The alarm connector has one dry output and two dry contact inputs available that can be associated to some alarm
configured in the SNMP management system. The output and two inputs correspond to MIB variables that can be activated or
read as the management application deems necessary. The alarm connector pinout is:
DB9 Function
1 and 6 Dry contact output normally closed
4 and 8 Dry contact input 0
5 and 9 Dry contact input 1
2, 3 and 7 Not connected

TRIBUTARY INTERFACES
The tributary interfaces of the MF4E1, MF2E1 and MF1E1 modems operate at the speed of 2 Mbps, according to
recommendation G.703. Each interface may be configured individually, locally or via management system.
The interfaces are available with connectors located in the front panel and allow for the connection of either coaxial cables
with impedance of 75 ohms or twisted pairs of 120 ohms.

V.35/V.36 INTERFACE
○
○
○
○
This interface is only available in the cabinet model. Through commands, it is possible to configure:
○
○
• Mode of operation: V.35 or V.36.
○
○
• Transmission clock: INT (internal clock), REG (slave clock) ou EXT (external clock).
○
○
• Connection to subchannel 3 from G.704 or directly to an E1 timeslot.
○
○
• Two-way local digital loop.
○
○
○
• Transmission clock phase: normal or inverted.
○
○
In some cases, due to the propagation time of the interface chips in the connected equipment, it becomes necessary to
○
invert the transmission clock phase. This is mainly observed when the clock is configured to INT or REG, and when speeds are

The composition of each subchannel is done through the indication of the 64 kbps timeslots that belong to the structured
E1 frame. The initial timeslot is indicated through command Tss[], and the number of timeslots to be used from the initial one,
through command Tsn[]. The subchannel speed will result from the number of timeslots used (example: 1 timeslot results in 64
kbps, 2 timeslots in 128 kbps, 3 in 192 kbps and then on).
Through command SubCh, the G.704 subchannels are connected to the electrical interfaces, that is: by commanding
subch[3]=yes, the V.35 interface will be connected to subchannel 3 in G.704; by commanding subch[3]=no, he V.35 interface
will be connected to the cross-connect matrix; by commanding subch[1]=yes, channel 1 of module 1 will be connected to
subchannel 1 in G.704; by commanding subch[1]=no, channel 1 of module 1 will be connected to the cross-connect matrix;
and then on.

Attention must be given to the fact that there is a determined number of 64 kbps timeslots in the structured E1 board, and
○
○
that these can not be overlapped in the subchannel composition.
○
○
A structured E1 board in mode PCM31 and PCM31C comprises the first heading timeslot (timeslot 0), with timeslots 1 to
○
31 being available for the composition of the subchannels. The structured E1 board in mode PCM30 and PCM30C comprises the

This loop applies only to the V35/V36 interface in the Cabinet models: MF4E1/GB, MF2E1/GB and MF1E1/GB, and uses
a protocol that follows the V.54 standard.
The local modem sends a loop activation sequence to the remote modem using its own V35/V36 interrface data channel.
If the remote modem is enabled to receive through command “VRDLAccept”, it will activate a loop in the V35/V36 interface data
channel. When the local modem wishes to undo this loop, it will send a deactivation sequence to the remote modem.
This type of test is also two way, that is, transmission data from ETD are returned to the ETD receival, and data from the line
are returned to it.
It is available through command “VTest” and signal CT140 of V35/V36 interface, which can be enabled or not through
command “VCT140EN”.

REDUNDANT POWER SUPPLY
○
○
The Metrofiber family products meet a demand of applications that require a high rate of circuit availability by optionally
○
○
using primary power supply redundancy in the MF/SUB subrack. The same subrack supports applications without redundancy
○
(supply, 20 modems and management board) or with redundancy (two supplies, 17 modems and management board), with any
○
combination of AC or DC supplies, allowing the user any choice and changes in the reliability policy with no need to change the
○
○
basic infrastructure.

MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
The devices are managed through the DMS system (Digitel Management Suite), a proprietary management system by
Digitel S.A. Indústria Eletrônica. Communication between the management station (manager) and devices (agents) is done
through SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol), RFC 1157.
The DMS system stores equipment information, events and statistics in a data base that may be retrieved to issue reports.
It can be used in several operating system platforms, such as, for example, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Linux, Solaris
and HP-UX. It can also be integrated into management platforms, such as, for example, HP OpenView Network Node Manager,
IBM Tivoli Netview, among others.
Management of the Metrofiber family features an automatic identification resource of the devices that make up the loop.
Viewing and configuration can be performed individually for each device, allowing configuration of the agent, tributaries, and
aggregates in each case.
The system allows the received alarms to be viewed and sorted by severity, and that the actions be linked to its reception,
such as, for example, execution of commands, etc.
Configuration of modems installed in the MF/SUB is done in a centered way at the MF/SNMP itself. The existing configuration
system in this module allows commands to be sent to all local modems and their remote pairs. Optionally, the MF/SNMP module
may not be installed; in this case, configuration is performed in a simplified way through existing programming dip-switches in
each modem. In both cases, the configuration always remains stored in the memory of each individual unit.

CONFIGURATION VIA CLI
○
○
○
○
Confiration of the devices through command line interface (CLI) may be done through the console interface (RS-232) or
○
Ethernet (10/100 Mbps). Both have similar operation, differing only in the way of accessing the equipment. This allows for the use
○
or configuration files that contain a set of commands to execute a standard configuration in an equipment plant.
○
○
The management board console works with the 57600 bps, 8, N, 1 configuration. The cabinet modem console can work
○
○
with 9600 bps, 8, N, 1, or 57600 bps, 8, N, 1, according to the configuration of the dip-switch in the front panel.
○
○
The console prompt has some information about the local modem and its connection to the remote modem. For example:
○
[Loc@MF00.0]#, where:
○
○
“Loc” indicates the typed commands will be executed in the local modem;
○
○
“Rem” indicates the typed commands will be executed in the remote modem;
○
○
“.0” indicates the optical connection with the remote modem is interrupted;
○
○
“.1” indicates the optical connection with the remote modem has been established and that the modem takes on
○
address “1”;
○
○
“.2” indicates the optical connection with the remote modem has been established and that the modem takes on
○
○
address “2”.
○
○
When connecting a board model modem to another cabinet model modem, the board modem takes on address “1”,
○
and the cabinet modem takes on address “2”. When connecting a cabinet model modem to another cabinet model modem,
○
address designation takes place randomly.
○
○
“MF01” indicates the board model modem is inserted in slot 1 of the subrack, and there on up to slot 20;
○
○
○
“MF00” is indicated in the cabinet model console when communication with the remote one is interrupted;
○
○
“MF00” is indicated in the cabinet model console when communication with another cabinet model
○
modem has been established.

CONFIGURATION COMMANDS
The configuration commands act on parameters, and may change, show or store their values. The parameters can be of
two types: single and multiple.
Single parameters have only one occurrence in the equipment and do not require any additional information. Multiple
parameters occur in a repeated way, and require an identification list for their full description.
The identifier list is always between brackets, [], and may comprise a single index or an interval with beginning and end
separated by hyphens, -.
The configuration commands are presented below.

SOFTWARE UPDATE VIA MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
○
○
○
○
When using a METRO line equipment network comprising a central point of an MF/SUB subrack and an MF/SMNP
○
management board it is possible to update modem and data converter software in this network through the management board.
○
○
The latest software version for the MF/SNMP management board features the latest software versions of the METRO line
○
elements managed by it.
○
○
It is possible to command the update directly from the DMS Digitel management system by means of either a graphic
○
○
interface or through commands on the MF/SNMP board console port.
○
○
During update with this process, data transport at all boards continues to operate normally, including at the board being
○
updated. At the end of the software update, the modem board will be restarted with a momentary interruption of data traffic.
○
Management, configuration and monitoring of the other network boards also continue to operate, except for the board being
○
○
updated. This updating process takes approximately 50 minutes for each board.
○
○
For updating via DMS, please refer to the electronic documentation included with the software.
○
○
For updating the MF/SNMP board via console, use the "update[slot]" command, where "slot" is the number of the slot
○
where the modem of converter is inserted on the subrack, varying from 1 to 20. To update the remote modems the slot value
○
varies from 21 to 40, respectively. An update queue may be programmed, for example: "update[2;5;7-9]", the slot2, slot5, slot7,
○
○
slot8 and slot9 modem will be updated. For further details about operation of this board, please refer to the MF/SNMP board
○
manual.

The Metrofiber line was designed for use in point to point applications and operates in a central (subrack/closet) from
where the optical fibers are distributed to several users. The figure below illustrates this situation.
The cabinet modems feature a large variety of electrical interfaces and optional modules, and offers the following services:
• G.703 interfaces at 2.048 Mbps, 75 or 120 ohms;
• V.35 or V.36 interface with speeds of 64 kbps to 2.048 Mbps in 64 kbps steps, with several synchronism source
options;
• Ethernte interface with a remote bridge, with one to four 2.048 Mbps WANs or one 64 kbps WAN at 2.048 Mbps;
• Ethernet interface with a remote router and one 64 kbps WAN at 2.048 Mbps;
• interface with one FXS voice channel;
• interface with one FXO voice channel;
It is also possible to operate directly between two cabinet models, as shown in the following figure.

Applications
○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○

○
○
○
○
○
○
○
○
○
As to the installation, the Metrofiber line is very versatile, allowing for the installation of up to 20 modem boards in a 19”, 3
○
○
UR height subrack of reduced depth. All connections are at the front, an ideal characteristic for closets of reduced dimensions.
○
○
The use of connection panels allows for the assembly of connectors facing the front or rear of the 19” rack. Also, this type of
○
panel allows easy access to the connectors and is insulated from the modem boards, avoiding problems of handling by third parties.
○
○
By using this system, with a single subrack and connections panels, it is possible to transport up to 80 E1 channels for up
○
to 20 clients.
○
○
The cabinet model allows for desk, wall and 19” rack assembly through side adaptors.
○
○
The optical interfaces are tilted in relation to the front panel, which reduces the risk of damaging the connected optical fiber cables.
○
○
By using two G.703 (G3) expansion modules in an MF4E1 cabinet model modem, it is possible to transport up to four E1
○
○
channels of transparent 2.048 Mbps.
○
○
By using the Router (RO) module in a cabinet model modem, it is possible to transport one Ethernet channel, which allows
○
the interconnection of different networks with one data band provided by one WAN channel between 64 kbps and 2.048 Mbps.
○
This WAN can be connected either to a framer G.704 or directly to the optical channel. This allows for either the interconnection of
○
○
different networks or internet access.
○
○
By using the Bridge (BG) module in a cabinet model modem, it is possible to transport one Ethernet channel to extend the
○
same network, with one data band provided by one WAN channel between 64 kbps and 2.048 Mbps or by up to four 2.048 Mbps
○
channels, in the case of an MF4E1. This WAN can be connected either to a framer G.704 or the 4 WANs, directly to the optical
○
○
channel. This allows the interconnection of two segments in the same Ethernet network to extend, for example, a corporate
○
network from the main office to its branches.
○
○

By using a voice channel module in a cabinet model modem, it is possible to transport one telephone channel with all its
signalling and at the same time data from another application in another electrical interface. The FXO module allows the connection
to either the public telephone network or a PABX extension. The FXS module allows the connection with either standard telephone
sets of public telephones. This way, it is possible to perform the extension of a PABX extension with one FXO in a point of the loop
and with one FXS to another point, where a telephone set is connected. It is also possible to use the hot-line mode.
The hot-line mode allows the connection of two telephone sets at each point of the loop. for such, there must be a cabinet model
modem at each point of the loop with one FXS module installed. When the single phone is removed from the hook on one side, a call is made
to the other side through a ring signal. Someone just needs to answer at the other end to start a conversation.
Detailed configuration of some of these modes is described in the Examples of configuration section in this manual.
The use of a Bridge ou Router module together with a voice module allows for an ideal solution to extend the infrastructure
of a main office to a branch by transporting, at the same time, the Ethernet network and telephone access, being either a central
PABX extension or a hot-line. In case interconnection of a large sized branch to several extensions is required, it is also possible
to use the module G.703 tributaries to transport E1 channels with up to 30 timeslots to connect to another PABX. In case the
extension of a data channel of some proprietary system is also required, the V.35/V.36 interface, as well as the G.703 tributary
interface, remain available.
In case the branch is very distant, it is possible to establish an optical link with a cabinet model modem at the main office
and a board model modem mounted in a subrack at a telephone operator, where the E1 channels enter the PDH network. Once
this is done, it is possible to extract those channels at another point of the country and establish another optical link to the branch,
where there is another cabinet model modem with the adequate interface converter modules.
The configurations and monitoring of the cabinet model modems installed at the remote point that communicate with the
board model modems installed in a subrack can be performed through the management board using their serial console, telnet,
SNMP commands or the DMS management system developed by Digitel.
