Teacher Arrested For Alleged Rape of 13-Year Old Student
A 39-year old teacher was arrested for the alleged rape of a 13-year old student in Bacolod City,
August 27. The report says that the suspect first tried to rape the student last April inside their
school’s comfort room but he did not succeed.
According to the police authorities’ initial report, it is the victim’s brother who caught the
suspect in the act.
Police Major Sherlock Gabana says, “Nakita niya (kapatid) ang biktima, wala nang damit pang-
baba” (He saw that his sister is no longer wearing underwear.)
However, the suspect denied the alleged rape of 13-year old student saying that he and the
student have a romantic relationship. He said that he fell in love with the minor student who is
just at the same age as one of his daughters.
The victim’s parents say that they were surprised when the teacher started to give gifts to their
daughter. They also said he would frequently walk the student home.
Gabana added, “Welcome naman daw ang guro sa pamilya ng biktima pero hindi bilang lover o
kasintahan ng bata,” (The victim’s family said that the teacher is welcome in their family but not
as a lover or boyfriend of their daughter.)
The suspect now faces rape charges while the victim will need to undergo a medical
examination. According to the Center for Women’s Resources (CWR) records, one child is raped
every hour in the Philippines as of 2017. The issue of rape in the Philippines is an ongoing battle
cry for women’s rights.
One of the biggest concerns with the Anti-Rape Law of 1997 is the minimum age of giving
consent which is 12 years old. Another is the penalty for convicted rapist which is life
imprisonment or a maximum of 40 years. Many groups of women activists push the death
penalty for rape.
One of the most heinous rape crimes that happened in the Philippines is the Eileen Sarmenta
rape-murder case committed by ex-mayor Antonio Sanchez.
A. What makes this a matter of ethics?
This article is considered as an ethical issue uder the sexual ethics. Sexual ethics is the study
of human sexuality and sexual behaviour. In a word, it seeks to understand and evaluate the
moral conduct of relationships and sexual activities from a philosophical perspective.
Sex can be the cause of great pain and suffering. While sex brings life, no doubt, it ruins the lives
of many. Cases of exploitation, harassment, assault and rape, show the darkest side of humanity.
Sex can both make and corrupt humans. For Christians, different sexual acts and preferences
can lead them closer to, and further away from God. For many moral philosophers, sexual acts
can lead them closer to and further away from what is right.
Sexual harassment has been taking place in the schools for years, but only recently has it
begun to get the attention it deserves. Some have called such attention an overreaction to normal
adolescent behavior, but sexual harassment can inflict deep psychological damage on young
people.
Yes, School is the second most common place, after the home, but surprisingly it can also be
a place where children and young adults are sexually violated. Acknowledging incidents of
sexual harassment, assault and abuse on school grounds means also acknowledging that the
school has failed to provide a safe learning environment for students. No matter what the reason
of the teacher is, his action is merely immoral and unethical.
My reason for my judgment above is the Code of Conduct for teachers where it outlines
teachers' main responsibilities to their students and defines their role in students' lives. Above all,
teachers must demonstrate integrity, impartiality and ethical behavior in the classroom and in
their conduct with parents and coworkers
The code of ethics for teachers is designed to protect the rights of the students, all the
students. It is important that teachers understand that when they get a teaching position they are
agreeing to follow the code of ethics. Teachers are expected to be fair to all their students and not
to take advantage of their position in any way.
