SUGGESTIONS FOR PROCESSING THIS EXERCISE WITH CLIENT

This assignment can help the skilled clinician work with a child who has experienced a traumatic
event. In the first section of this assignment, the child is asked to describe what happened during
the traumatic event.

Trauma can have long-term effects on a child’s feeling of self-worth and on development. It is
imperative for the therapist to be respectful of the child’s feelings and the child’s pace for
expressing the experience of trauma. Pressuring a child to express feelings can revictimize the
child.
Therapist’s Overview

As with all areas of clinical work, it is important that the therapist have experience working with
children who have been traumatized. Working outside of one’s clinical expertise can be
dangerous to the client and is unethical.

For the second worksheet, the child will be asked to draw a picture of himself/herself during the
trauma. The therapist can use this drawing to help the child express facts and feelings associated
with the trauma.

The therapist should also use his/her best clinical judgment to determine whether this section of
the assignment should be completed in the session instead of as a homework assignment. In most
situations it will be important to complete this aspect of the assignment in the therapy session.
