SUGGESTIONS FOR PROCESSING THIS EXERCISE WITH CLIENT

This assignment focuses on children who have recently learned that they were adopted. The child
is asked to draw a picture of how he/she learned about being adopted. This drawing can then be
used to initiate discussion about feelings in the context of a supportive therapeutic relationship.

Review the drawing with the child. Help the child to verbally express feelings associated with
the adoption. Children frequently process feelings through the concrete description of details.
When describing how he/she learned about the adoption, the child might focus on very specific
details. Do not rush the child. Be sensitive to the child’s pace for disclosure.
