GENERAL:
Previously, Canon U.S.A., Inc. regarded the Counter Memory PCB as a restricted part. As such, the Counter
Memory PCB was only available by contacting the Canon Technical Support Hotline. This publication is to
announce that this component will no longer be restricted for these models and will be open for purchase from
Canon U.S.A., Inc.
The Serial Number PCB's will continue to be restricted. The Serial Number PCB can only be obtained by
contacting the Canon Technical Support Hotline. Refer to the troubleshooting procedures in this publication
for the Serial Number PCB. Previous Technical Publications that covered this topic were: GTI-T151,
Technical FYI iR5000-F005, iR2200-F001, iR8500-F001 and Technical Publication TP03 036.pdf.
DETAILS:
As explained in more detail in these previous publications, the Counter Memory, Serial Number and Main
Controller PCBs work as a set and are considered the “Soft Counter Circuit”. The Counter Memory PCB is
electronically stamped with the serial number from the Serial Number PCB. Neither the Counter Memory
PCB nor the Serial Number PCB can be swapped to other equipment. The Counter Memory PCB keeps track
of the total count, which cannot be erased or changed. The service counters are retained by the Main
Controller. These counters can be reset manually through service mode. When the Counter Memory PCB
must be replaced, after installing the new one, the new Counter Memory PCB learns the Total Count from the
Main Controller. This is retained in SRAM on the Main Controller PCB and held active by means of an on
board battery.
The imageRUNNER 1023/1023N/1023iF/2016/2020/2016i/2020i model does not have a Main Controller
PCB. The Counter Memory PCB is instead mounted to the Image Processor PCB.

Note 1:
It is important when troubleshooting Counter Memory PCB failures to observe all the notes in this
publication. Failure to do so can cause extensive down time in correcting faults incurred by
mismatched Soft Counter circuit boards or incorrect troubleshooting procedures.
Note 2:
It is illegal to tamper with this circuit in an attempt to falsify the counter readings of any Canon
Copier.

SERVICING:
Items to keep in mind when attempting to troubleshoot the Soft Counter circuit:
1. When troubleshooting the Soft Counter circuit, it is important to not discard or lose track of the
Counter Memory PCB, Serial Number PCB or Main Controller / Image Processor PCB until the
equipment’s proper operation has been verified.
2. Only replace the Counter Memory PCB if any one of the error codes on the previous pages is
indicated.
3. A good first step in troubleshooting this circuit is to mark the Counter Memory PCB with the serial
number of the equipment using a felt tip pen. This will allow reverting back to the original board set if
any change of symptoms occurs without fixing the problem.
e-Support Filename: TP05 108d.pdf
Date: 07-14-10
4. As mentioned in previous Technical Publications, the Counter Memory PCB is a matched board with
the Serial Number PCB and cannot be swapped with one from any other equipment. Doing so may
change the error code and will not correct the problem and will certainly add to confusion, thus
increasing downtime.
5. If attempting to diagnose one of these codes on an iR1600/2000/2010F, refer to TP03 036.pdf. This
equipment has Soft Counter codes for the Printer PCB as well as the main body. It must be
determined first if the problem is attributed to the Printer PCB or main body before proceeding.
6. Replacing the Counter Memory PCB for either an E245 or an E247 will result in a Total Count of zero
(“0”) after fixing the problem.
7. Never replace two boards in the Soft Counter circuit at the same time! This would include any
two of either the Counter Memory PCB, Main Controller PCB (or Image Processor depending on
model) and Serial Number PCB (see Figure 1). Doing so may change the symptom to an E355 code
or E354 code, which would be unclearable.
8. If the error code has changed but the problem is not fixed, start over by putting the original PCBs back
into the equipment. Then ensure only one PCB is replaced at a time such as the Main Controller /
Image Processor or Counter Memory PCB.
9. In some cases, after replacing the Counter Memory PCB, an E354 or E355 code may appear. At this
point, enter Service Mode and access the “Clear” tab under “Function” mode
(FUNCTION>CLEAR>E355-CLR). Access either E355-CLR or E354 CLR depending on the error
code you have encountered [see Notes #3 and #4 (step #10 for the imageRUNNER 1023/
1023N/1023iF/ 2016/ 2020/ 2016i/ 2020i) to clear E354 or E355]. Highlight the function, press “OK”.
The “OK” button will gray out for about five (5) seconds then will appear normal again. After that,
cycle the power OFF. Wait at least five (5) seconds to power ON again. If the E354 or E355 code
does not clear, retrace your steps by putting the original PCBs back into the machine again and verify
the original error code. If an E354 or E355 code persists and cannot be cleared after replacing the
suspected defective PCB, contacting the Technical Support Hotline may be required at that point.
10. In some cases, on the imageRUNNER 1023/ 1023N/ 1023iF/ 2016/ 2020/ 2016i/ 2020i after replacing
the Counter Memory PCB, an E354 or E355 code may appear. At this point, enter service mode then
scroll to “CLEAR”. Press “OK”, then scroll to “ERR”. Press “OK”, then an E355 will appear. Wait
ten (10) seconds until “E355 CLEAR” is completed. Then cycle the main power.
11. When replacing the Counter Memory PCB with a new one from service stock, ensure the correct
Counter Memory PCB for that model number is installed. Failure to do so can result in an E246 or
E355 (unclearable). See the attached images of some of these boards. Counter Memory PCB part
numbers are included on page five (5) of this publication.
12. If replacing the Counter Memory PCB does not fix an E245, E246 or E247 code, suspect a failed Main
Controller PCB (put back the original Counter Memory PCB when replacing the Main Controller
PCB).

Date: 07-14-10
13. If removing the Main Controller or Image Processor PCB for repair at an Authorized Parts Repair
Facility (A.P.R.F.), ensure the Counter Memory PCB has been removed and kept with that equipment.
After installing a new or repaired Main Controller or Image Processor PCB, if previously selected,
select optional counters 2 through 6 (displayed in “Counter Check”) in service mode:
OPTION>USER>COUNTER 2 ~ 6 (Only 4 counters available on the 2016/2020 model)
14. Never operate the equipment without the Counter Memory PCB installed. Doing so may cause an
E245 code, which can only be cleared by “zeroing out” the Main Controller PCB by one of our
A.P.R.F.’s or replacing it with a new Main Controller PCB.
15. The Serial Number PCB is a matched board with the Counter Memory PCB and cannot be swapped
with any other equipment. Doing so will generate an E354 or E355 code.
16. On newer models from Canon (as of this writing, all “70” series and iR3530 series), to clear an E355
or E354 code, you must enter Service Mode Level 3 (see Notes #3 and #4). DO NOT ADJUST
ANYTHING ELSE IN THE SERVICE MODE LEVEL! Doing so will have an adverse affect on
the machine and you will not be supported by Canon U.S.A., Inc.
