CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM
I. INTRODUCTION
School is said to be a place where children learns and molds themselves into someone they
wanted to be. But that is not the only luxury that school can give, students can also battlefield.
A place of survival may seem where the famous and attractive are honored and respected while
the poor little ones are being belittled and bullied.
Bullying is a big problem now in this society and what’s alarming is that the breeding
ground of the plague is a school. The very own second home is the ground for bullying. But
before focusing into the problem, bullying must be define first. Base on the definitiom given
by the website of Google Scholar, bullying is repetitive aggressive behaviour with an
imbalance of power. Research, especially on school bullying, has increased massively in the
last decade, fuelled in part by the rise of cyberbullying. Prevalence rates vary greatly. This is
in part because of measurement issues, but some persons, and groups, are more at risk of
involvement. Victims suffer from bullying, but some of those who perpetrate bullying can be
socially skilled and get at least short‐term benefits from their behaviour. Individual, family,
school class, school and broader country factors can influence the chances of involvement.
Beyond individual coping strategies, there have been many anti‐bullying interventions
developed over the last 30 years. Meta‐analyses of these programmes show that they have had
some success. Further progress is needed in establishing the most effective components and in
tackling cyberbullying. There are many factors that may affect a person’s behavior caused by
its’ environment. Bullying can either be physically, emotionally and even mentally. It may
cause someone’s depression, thus making the self-esteem degrades. Nowadays, some people
not seem to notice event such as bullying but some incident seems vivid as crystal. It can’t be
identified easily if it is already an act of bullying or just another form of it
Students undergo different challenges in life and experience bullying at the same time. Bullying
must be stop. But how? What makes a person bully? How can bullying be overcome? These
questions are the main reason of the study and answers to these are soon to be found.
II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Bullying still appears to be a big hindrance to one’s emotional growth. Hence, it also affects
the victim physically. This study aim to answer the following questions:
(1) How does bullying affect the academic performances of the students?
(2) What are the possible reasons of bullying?
(3) What types of people are directly affected by bullying?
(4) What are the effects of this to one’s individual growth?
(5) What are the possible ways to stop bullying in school?
III. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Students nowadays are emotionally imbalanced. Tend to be easily affected by the people
around. Mostly teenagers who are still in the process of metamorphosis are affected by several
matters. These matters serve to greatly affect growths. The study gives benefits to the following:
Students. It gives importance for students to understand the collected information and
the main reason of why students most especially teens bully each other. At the same time for
students to know how to lessen or probably stop this plague in school and in the community, and
to control the actions and respect fellows.
Educators. It also gives the teachers an idea to recognize the act of bullying in school. And
also to be able to discipline the student’s action in school. And they can also help the students to
be a productive citizen.
Parents. It is important for the parents to be able to give advice to the children. To keep
them away from the wrongdoings. Talk to them and know their problems so that students would
not feel alone and would not express those though hurting somebody.
Researchers. The study also helps the researchers to aim the impact of school bullying on
student’s academic performance.

CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Bullying harassment are not new issues that students and schools face. In fact, over the
years it has been viewed as being so common place in school that it has been overlooked as a threat
to students and reduced to a belief that bullying is a development stage that most young were
experience then get over. (Ross, 2002 P. 107)
This harassment is not isolated to school alone but schools are the best place to actively
intervene, teachers, administrators, counselors, and even students have the greatest access to the
most students through a school system. It is here that school staff can intervene, support and
educate students about ending bullying behaviors directly and indirectly. Breaking the bullying
cycle the paper will address bullying in general at all grade levels. But its interventions focus will
be at the senior high school level. (Harris and Hathorn, 2002. P. 50).
According also to Harris and Hathorn, because adolescence is difficult time in childs
maturation. Bullying exacerbates these difficult time by forming barriers to positive connections
with other.
Bullying is a behavioral phenomenon that has attracted the attention of educators and
policy makers in many parts of the world in recent years. For Fante (2005), bullying is a situation
which is characterized by intentional verbal or physical abuse, made repetitively, by one or more
students against one or more peers. The author states that this phenomenon is a form of violence
quickly growing in the world. In Brazil, during November 2015 the Federal government
established the nationwide initiative called the Systematic Program1 to Combat Bullying.2 This
federal law aims to combat bullying throughout society, especially in schools.
Students and school faculty members consequently the presence of bullying at school
often creates a barrier for young people to develop into well adjusted adults.
High school is cast opportunity educators have to work with students at building character
for some students. This may be the last opportunity for an intervention to change behaviors, before
they become adults in the workplace with family in the community at large.
Commonly, students who have a weak self-emotions and personalities are the one that is
greatly affected by bullying. Some cannot be able to endure the feeling of pain inside them and do
not have the guts to defend themselves against the stronger one. Bullying is inevitable and cannot
be avoided but students’ must learn to at least defend themselves and be strong enough to be not
affected greatly in School’s Academic Performance. School’s Administrators and staff can also
help to combat bullying by initiating activities that will lessen the students’ boredom and
loneliness.
