ME 409 COMPRESSIBLE FLUID FLOW

Scheme of valuation

PART A
Stagnation condition – 1mark
1
Critical condition – 1 mark
Figure of subsonic & supersonic wave propagation – 1.5 marks
2
Explanation -1.5 marks

3 Explanation of choking in isentropic flow with figure – 2marks

Relation between Mach number and area change – 2marks

4
Explanation on acceleration or deceleration of fluid flow through a variable area duct- 1 mark

PART B

Develop a relation for the percentage deviation between the compressible and incompressible values of
5 pressure coefficient- 4 marks
Value for a supersonic flow of perfect gas with Mach number - 1 mark
The Mach number at inlet and exit of a supersonic diffuser are 3 and 1.5 respectively. The air at inlet has a

6 pressure of 70 kPa and a temperature of -7oC. If the mass flow rate of air is 125 kg/s, find (i) stagnation
conditions, (ii) exit area (iii) static conditions of air at exit. Make use of isentropic relations and tables.
