Me 409 Compressible Fluid Flow: Tutorial 3: Numerical Problems On One Dimensional Isentropic Flow

This document contains a tutorial on numerical problems involving one-dimensional isentropic fluid flow. It includes three problems: 1) calculating Mach number and area given other parameters for air flowing through a duct, 2) determining pressure, velocity and force for air flowing through a conical diffuser, and 3) calculating mass flow rate and exit velocity for air flowing through a nozzle. The document is authored by Dr. VENKITARAJ K P from the College of Engineering Adoor.

 Air flows isentropically through a duct. At a particular section in the
passage, the cross-sectional area is 400 mm2 and M =0.4. At another
section the area is 300 mm2. What is the Mach number at the second
section? What would be the area at the section where M =1? Take γ = 1.4.

 A conical diffuser has entry and exit diameters of 15 cm and 30 cm respectively. The
pressure, temperature and velocity of air at entry are 0.69 bar, 340 K and 180 m/s
respectively. Determine: (a) the exit pressure, (b) the exit velocity and (iii) the force
exerted on the diffuser walls. Assume isentropic flow, γ = 1.4, Cp = 1 kJ/kg-K

 Exercise problem
 Air flows' through a nozzle which has inlet areas. of 0.001 m2 . If
the air has a velocity of 80 m/s, a temperature of 301 K and' a
pressure of 700 kPa at the inlet section and a pressure of 250 kpa
at the exit, find the mass flow' rate through the nozzle and
assuming one-dimensional isentropic flow, the velocity at the
exit section of the nozzle.
