Torrential rains poured continuously for six days during last October and waters of the river
rose to dangerous levels. The low line bank where Ashok live was almost submerged in
water and nobody was sure to what extent damages had occurred. The bridge across the
river was broken and people had no way of keeping in touch with each other. The
uncertainty caused a lot of grief to many people, and needless. To say, Roshna and her family
were terribly upset not knowing what had happened to the relatives across the river.
Feeling awfully restless, Roshna went to the old man Yadav who was carrying food supplies
across the river for some special friends of his, and requested him to take her to the other
side. She narrated plight and said that she would pay him Rs-50/- for his favour(the usual
Ferry charges were Rs-5/- for a round trip) Yadav said that taking her meant carrying less
food for the needy and he would not be willing to do so unless she could at least double her
fare. Since Roshna and her parents were poor and did not have much money, she did not
have the rupees 100 that he asked for. Actually, even the rupees 50 she had with her been
the money with which she was to have bought a text book. She pleaded and cajoled, bought
to no avail. As she sat dejected under a tree, Roshna sighted her college mate, Laxman,
whose father owned a ferry, and narrated her plight, begged him to take her across the river.
Laxman said he would be pleased to accede to her request in return for a small favour. He
wanted to his her just ones on her lips. He told her how much in love he himself was with
her and how he had always dreamt of his him her just one’s as she stood horrified by the
unexpected proposition, a mutual friend of theirs, Vishnu approach them.
The movement Laxman saw Vishnu, he told him that Roshna wanted to cross the
river and he would be happy to take her in his ferry if only he could kiss her once. “Is that
such a big price for her to pay?” asked Laxman, why Roshna stood there feeling terrible
embarrassed. Vishnu shrugged his shoulder and said that he did not want to get involved in
something going on between the two and walked away. Not knowing what else to do and
wanted to see Ashok where badly, Roshna very reluctantly agreed to Laxman kissing her just
once. “Never, never, never again do I want to have anything to do with you and you must
promise to leave me alone in the future”, she said. He agreed, then kissed her and took her
to other side of the river.
Roshna was crying all the time and she walked from the river bank to Ashoks house.
When she saw Ashok alone at home she wept even more bitterly. Not understanding why
she was so unhappy Ashok assured her that they were all alright and that she stood not is so
upset. When he said this, Roshna started sobbing bitterly. She then told him what had
happened. Ashok immediately flew into a rage and slapped Roshna on both her chicks.
Ashoks father Pradip Patel who just then walked into the house saw his son hitting Roshna
and the poor girl wailing loudly. He then took his belt and beat up his son badly. Roshna
walked out of the house feeling avenged as his son was settling in the western sky. There
was a smile on her face for the first time since the last few days when the rains poured
incessantly and the river flooded.
