I. GETTING STARTED
A. Brainstorming
Everyone has something in the past. Some experiences in live may be interesting, few of them may
be bad, and the rests may be unforgettable. The past experiences and activities may color our lives.
They can be a mater of moral teaching or moral lesson that can be used as references to what to do
and what not to do next.

about the related topic to understand the following questions. Works in pairs and answer the

II. THE ORIENTATION AND ELABORATION

A. Recount text

A recount text is the retelling or recounting of an event or an experience; or, recount is a text that
retells events or experiences in the past. In literary term, experience is what we do , feel , hear ,
read , even what we dream.
In term of written text, the past activities are designed and wrapped are recount text, which are not
similar to narrative genre. Narrative tends to be fictious while recount tells something real or
factual in the past.
Recount are often personal stories and they can be either factual or imaginative. Examples of
recount genre include a trip to the zoo which a family took yesterday, and events. In more ,
comprehensive definition, actually recount can be classified into three categories such as personal
recount, factual recount, and imaginative recount, each of them has specific characteristic and
details :
 Personal recount
This usually retells an events that the writer was personally involved in.
 Factual recount
It records and incidents, e.g . a science experiment, police reports.
 Imaginative recount
It is writing of an imaginary role and give details of events , e.g. A day in the life of pirates; how
I invented.

B. The social Function

In line with the concept above, the social function or purpose of recount is to inform and describe
past experiences by retelling events in the order in which they happened . then, in wider sense ,
recount is also used to retell events for the purpose of informing or entertaining their audiences. In
addition, the word event here means something real and factual or even imaginative.

C. The generic structure and textual elements

The above generic structure is a standard and common rhetorical structure of the genre recount
writing. As it is explained above, it consists of three main elements namely orientation , events ,
re- orientation. They have their own functions and characteristic . to have a clear and vivid structure
of recount writing. The format above can be drawn in physical sense as follow.
 The recount has a tittle, which usually summarize the text.
 It has specific participants.
 The basic recount consist of three parts.
 The details are selected to help the reader reconstruct the activity or incident.
 The ending may describe the outcome of the activity
 The details of time , place and incident need to be clearly
 The descriptive details may also be required to provide information.
 It includes personal thoughts
The related vocabulary usages

In general , the related vocabulary usages of the recount writing in common are :

material process and circumstances of time and place
 It focuses on temporal sequence

 The noun groups describes people and places
 The uses adjective functions to indicate mood of the events or personal attitude

III. THE TEACHING AND LEARNING MODEL.

As elaborated in the previous section , the process of teaching and learning genre writing falls into
three main stages such as ; 1. Modelling text 2. Modifying text and 3. Independent text. This course
book will show the systematic step of teaching and learning writing through genre approach.

 Second Book
THE ART OF SCIENCETIFIC WRITING
Introduction
A. what is an introduction ?
In term of any longer writings such as essay writing and or scientific writing, the introduction or
introductory section plays important rules. Introduction is also sometime called background
introducing the reader to the larger context for the specific study to understand why the topic is
relevant, important and thus why you have carried out you study.

B. what to write in introduction section

Writing introduction is actually relatively hard to do for many writers, especially the beginners.
Many writers often fails to write the introduction in once or twice or even three times. This show
that writing introduction needs a lot of practices and exercises. The more important points is what
is written in introduction or in introductory section.
The specific section then tend to lead the statement for formulated in line with topic. It is also tells
background of the study or writing how you have come up with your research question . it includes
a literature review to make clear to what extent the question has been addressed by other, but it
should be not summarize everything that is somehow related to your topic. If a researcher report
requires a more comprehensive review or explanation of the theory, this could be included as a
separate chapter after the introduction chapter. As a matter facts, a topic or theme of research or
scientific writing is actually a matter of repititation , you are not advisedly to state in your
background that your writing is totally new and never be done before by the writer.

To formulate a good question , it is essential to consider the followings :

 The question is important, relevant , and interesting
 The question is simple and suffcienly specific to be answered in your study.
 The question is measurable.
 The question is feasible.

C. how to organize the introduction ?

It is a fact that this point often become the writer’s weakness when writing. He does not know and
where to put idea in paper properly.
As matter of fact, during my experiences to teaching writing and also to guiding the students to
writing thesis, I found some different and unique common pattern or lay out of introduction in
student writing such as upside down triangle , rectangle , squale , etc. here are some common
pattern of student introduction or inductor section that re found the student writing.
CHAPTER 3
CRITICIZE

3.1 The Strength Book

the advantage of the Book that I read is that describes reading and at the time of this study, the
research was completed with clear source data and in the Book it was very clear in discussing good
use. in the two books that I criticize, the two books have different advantages, namely: in the first
book, the book is very clear about its contents and there are also examples of tasks that can be
understood. and in the second book, a very clear book also on the content, but this book is more
detailed explaining the explanation speech that is very clear and has many examples so that it is

easy to understand too .

3.2 The Weakness Book

According to my analysis, the second book has only a few weaknesses, namely, in the second
book, although the book is very much an explanation than the first book but the second book is
somewhat more difficult to make an example and a little difficult to understand it.
