with Orals with his General Questions the Peon Came in and Asked Capt.Awasthi to send this

So in Short no External and only Internal Examiner.

answer I answered them.

Guys awasthi looks for confidence and ur general knowledge and ur knowledge abt place whr u live.
Whereas Capt Panda looks for ur core understanding, so make sure ur fundaa r clear and dis r his
main questions as u all knw.
For me it was repeat oh history. 1st I got both of them and bcoz I was nt able to answer few GK
questions capt awasthi was not happy. This time I nailed it with GK and Der it was.
1 thing if Awasthi passes u no internal can fail u.

inspected?

Then he asked me to rate myself and then said you shall study a little more and come again.

throughout the orals and didn’t ask any question but was quietly listening.
Capt. Vaz questions r not straight fwd, its lil tricky, asses his questions and then answer.
1. Tell me about bauxite loading and MSC circular about bulk carrier issued by DG.

4. can young officer do night watches and provisions for that.

Lot of Cross Questioning about all above questions. Throughout the orals Capt. Vaz made me feel as
if he not satisfied by my answers.
He was trying hard to fail me and I was trying hard to counter him.
Finally he asked me to wait outside for 2 minutes and den called me inside.
Capt. Uppal den said that he has assessed me and I hav done fairly well and dey hav decided to pass
me.

where ship has to come down to manoeuvring speeds). Then he asked me even after considering all
the factors why does the ETA sometimes differs as you have observed by a day or so in some cases ?

29. Which publications did you generally used to refer as a chief officer on bulk carrier ?
30. What varieties of cargo did you carry on your last vessel ?
31. What is Preliminary Inquiry and Formal Investigation ? How is it carried out ?

33. You just got a call that you will be joining a bulk carrier in a weeks time. What all things will you
plan and how ( As a Master) right from the time you received this call till the time you have put your
last step from the gangway while signing off ?
34. What is critical thinking ? Will you think critically onboard ?
My Experience : As soon as i entered i was made comfortable enough that i could express myself
freely without the fear in mind of being in front of the surveyor. I was told apart from my knowledge
on the subject which according to him any donkey can also mug-up he will be assessing me on my
communication, expression, body language, assertiveness. I was told that i have to assume that i
already hold a COC of Master and answer all the questions with the same frame of mind. I was told
that he would stump me intentionally in between my answers, but the choice still remains with me
whether to agree or disagree with his choices of different answers.
He will put you into situations framed instantaneously and then observe the following : Eye-contact,
Reaction time, Eye-Face expressions, The way you frame and answer him boldly with practical
justifications. At various stages he will present you with an answer which would appeal to you as a
better alternative, and then he will wait whether you still stick to your answer or shift / agree to his
options.Basically he’s checking how stable you are. Confidence , Expressiveness, Mannerism hold a
good position in satisfying him. And there’s something in him which you cannot guess till the
moment you get your result from the internal. I felt whatever i answered apart from the knowledge, he
was observing and looking for something else which i still cannot be sure of.

There were some other questions which i don't remember now and also lot of cross questioning on
above topics. It was a rapid fire kind of oral and with generally no time to think. Just one advice that
try to remember as much dates and resolution numbers as possible. Internal said you have very less
marks from the External, so can't change his decision.
1. What were the fixed fire fighting system on your ships ( Gas Ships). ( Fixed DCP and Deck water
spray system on deck and Co2 and Hypermist system in engine room)
2. Explain broadly working and requirements for the DCP and spray system.
3. Started opening his register and searched for a case study and then read it to me. It was a ship that
was resulted in a Total constructive loss because of fire in engine room. He then told me the causes
like no drill, total lack of maintenance , doors and skylight not sealing, the crew did not know how to
fight fire, co2 all bottles did not release and master was not capable in releasing co2, confusionmany
more. then came the question, as per elements of ISM tell me what where the short coming in this
situation.
( master responsibility - no clear instructions given, resource and personnel - master not aware of ams,
Emergency preparedness - no drill etc ) lots of discussion by this
4. u take over same ship in and jiffy at Gibraltar without realizing the condition of the ship, and now
going in a port. what is ur responsibility as a master. ( report to DP, He then acts as a DP " yaar
captain kaam chala lo yaar, last waala bhi to chala raha tha", i said will report to the Flag state and the
coastal state authorities of my condition and the actions which are planned to bring the ship to
acceptable condition. Lots of discussion on this and then it was established that it was better to report
and rather to come inside a port with hidden known deficiencies.
5. If u do what u r saying to do, ur super will not be happy with u at all. how will u handle this ( let
them not be happy, i have to take care of my ship staff an my ship first.)
6. what is an accelerated turn and constant radius turn.
7. Opened up a chart with a lot of small islands and another with a picture of radar screen with targets
acquired and shown in relative vector. says that second mate call u in the night in full panic and says
that i don't know where she is and maybe i dozed off, action as master. what will be ur immediate
actions. ( i told him ill order him to reduce speed immediately as by the time i go to radar screen and
asess n nearest thing to me is how far and then where is my position, then discussion to justify my
actions)
8. How will u determine ur position in the quickest possible way. ( GPS position)
9. how will u determine that ur GPS position is good. what is WSS and RAIMS. HDOP. DGPS.
Then observe the radar screen n tell me one action which will get u away from all objects.
10. What are safety contour and safety depth settings in ECDIS.
11. What happens in the safety settings if u change them ( 2 color n 4 color displays, depths in bold n
all )
12. what are Ato N in AIS. pseudo AIS buoys).
13. how will u get to know about the pseudo AIS boy.
14. u r going to take over a ship AS MASTER, how will u go about it.
15. What all certificates will u check? ( all certificates chapter wise only reached solos chapter 7 n he
changed the question)
16. From where do u get what all certificates are required, where is d list given.

18. Opned a weather fax chart. and asked be to tell him about it. decode the chart for him. ( where are
lows and highs, their direction of movement, cold front, warm front.
19.this particular chart did not have th wind markings on it, so he asked to predict the direction and
and the speed of wind ( gradient of the pressure, high to low wind will flow and geostrophic wind
scale)
20. he opened a chart of singapore straits, approach to gusong boarding ground from east. there was a
course drawn, he said that u r given this as a passage plan by the second, what will u tell him to
improve or what instructions will u give to him to modify this plan ( the chart was a xerox , so i told
him that ill tel the second to get a new chart, mark proper courses and write the course and distances,
mark PI, clearing bearings, alterations and all other things i cld think of, change the courses to cross
the lane as 90 deg as possible and join the traffic lanes with as smooth angle as possible, mark the
reporting and all other normal things)
21. ROR situations as like of case studies of accidents in narrow channels and TSS and also ROR
crossing situation in the above chart. he has placards of these and then he discusses how as master u
would have acted to prevent the accident. what will be ur action as per ROR.
22. In the Singapore strait chart a ship altered course to prevent a risk of collision, but this ship ran
aground. u as master what would have done to prevent such incident.
23. TRS, what indications, what Actions, what instruction will u give the duty officers if u r in a trs
prone area.

29. is there a setting in ECDIS that u can choose not to see the objects which fall inside ur safety
contour setting. ( if setting is 50 m , is it possible that u r not able to see a shoal of 15 m inside the

run aground if u neglect this.
30 - use of AIS in collision avoidance - ( to identify all targets in blind sectors and maybe ships which
are not panting in radar and have ais, compare cap tcpa and establish proper working of arpa -

CAPT, IYYER is a very practical person, and u have to give practical answers, if u start with a
practical approach in ur answer, he won't go in much detail and will be very happy. he helps u with ur
answers.
after about half and hour Capt Panda calls in his cabin.
1. why did u go back sailing and did not apper for ur orals. what id this attitude and what not. he
grilled for about 5 min for this. money is more important to u guys looks like, what is this casual
attitude,
2. then he asked me his regular question of rudder stuck at 5 deg. i gave him his regular answer of
physically checking of the rudder is stuck.
then he broke it down in different scenarios.
1. if its not stuck but showing stuck on bridge.
2. if it s stuck
3. technical difference in FU, NFU and Emergency steering.
3. what actions as per ROR now, What lights, what sound signals, step by step. NUC making way,
NUC underway.
4. LRIT as per what requirement.
5. Working of LRIT and LRIT signal how it goes.
Then he said my colleague has assessed u thoroughly so I'm passing you.

Told him I will slow down the ship and then I will check whether the person is on board or not and

properly, from here it was downfall for me.

2) U taken over as master, tell top 5 important elements to review about ship once taken over
command as master for safe navigation of ship from port A to port B before departure.
3) Another 5 important elements for just taking ship from A to B...( never mind certificates and all,
just safe navigation and propulsion.basically he wants to test logical thinking and elements to consider
as master on priority basis).. Lots of discussion on it too..
4) Prior departure, how u will make sure that your vessel is safe during entire passage. What all things
you will check and satisfy on stability conditions presented to you by your chief officer.apart from
stability condition criteria of imo,condition of gm and various factors tht could lead to possible
instability!
5) During navigation,in the same river as above with pilot onboard,vessel aground!! How you will
determine which part of vessel has touched the bottom.Action following aground scenario,how much
upthrust is required to pull the vessel. Basically the grounding calculation and from final drafts after
grounding ,upthrust and power required to pull the vessel. Factors to consider before pulling out the

place of evidence
5 u reach that point of SAR...It's night..will u carry out search and rescue..(told him yes with all lights
and search light on short track spacing)...he said it won't help den still y u want to do it...i said if
person missing is nearby it will give him hope (was very happy)

I am not at all satisfied with the answers from a Master candidate like this..I ve already made up ma
mind Aman.If chief mate wud have given
like this then its ok. but not from a master!! Guys to be very frank, as it was ma first attempt and after
seeing his past experience about failing
candidates i was in a mood to fail and was thinking let it be..lets finish this off and go back to ma
friend...He wrote Fail on ma Exn and

d)Is HNS convention applicabe to ur vessel & How owner is protecting against third party
claims(Buoy damage,Wreck removal)?
e)What was ur last vsl PI insurance cover?(Answered dont remember the exact figure but should be as
per LLMC ,he was happy)
f)Precautions for making fast Tug?(Told him abt Tug push points,cross question from where u will
find and what is special in construction)
g)What is girding of tug?
h)Heavy rain and 3/Off calls u on bridge rudder stuck at 5 deg?
i)Cross questoning about telemotor and Hunting gear mechanism?
j)Containment system on Gas carrier?
k)Fixed fire extinguishing system?

1st Case-After 3 days 5 containers lost overboard.
2nd Case-After 8 days 10 containers lost
3rd Case-After 10 days Vessel developed heel and had to go for repairs.After repairs(1 month) when
vessel reached destination ,consignee put a delay cargo claim of 3 million dollars
Answer in First and Second case there will be no GA as no intention sacrifice and for third case from
deviation point we will note Position,Bunker ROB and GA will commence till vessel leaves repair
yard.
For cargo claims i answered P&I but be said NO.
Finally Golden words which all ASM candidates want to hear, Iam Passing U,but u must find out who
will pay for cargo delay.Also inform ur batchmates dat Capt Panda has started taking Case studies.
He doesnt want to hear any regulation number and figures.

As I entered Capt. Vaz introduced himself and asked me to sit. Capt. Uppal was sitting on his table
throughout the orals and didn’t ask any question but was quietly listening.
Capt. Vaz questions r not straight fwd, its lil tricky, asses his questions and then answer.
1. Tell me about bauxite loading and MSC circular about bulk carrier issued by DG.
2. MLC – title 5.
3. DMLC ( part1/2)
4. can young officer do night watches and provisions for that.
5. SCOPIC- lot of cross questions.
6. where do u relate “clear grounds “ apart from PSC.
7. Loading for Caustic soda, and precautions.
8. Demlusifier for the type of cargo u hav loaded.
9. SAT-A on board, can the ship be detained , if Yes, Y? if No, Y?
10. Type of batteries used in GMDSS radios.
11. PSC rights for inspection from where.
12. what do u understand by -77 hrs.
13. Can Vsl send routine msgs using SAC code, if yes Y, if no Y?
Lot of Cross Questioning about all above questions. Throughout the orals Capt. Vaz made me feel as
if he not satisfied by my answers.
He was trying hard to fail me and I was trying hard to counter him.
Finally he asked me to wait outside for 2 minutes and den called me inside.
Capt. Uppal den said that he has assessed me and I hav done fairly well and dey hav decided to pass
me.

He had made up his mind to get done with me, well before the questions.
So basically he overturned 7/10 from Gupta.

anything.. started immediately as
1. In your ship Master, CE COff and 2E .. all drunk and vessel aground... will Owner get any
compensation if no then why and if yes then why??
2. what is the requirement of CO2 for a paint locker?
3. What is the requurement for Liferaft on Passenger ship?
4. Broadcast a msg for your vessel aground in Singapore straits on VHF
5. What is PSC form A and B and contents of that?
6. If PSC boards on your vessel which is very old Bulk Carrier then what will they check on deck?
7. Which part on upper deck playings will he check and make a diagram of Cargo Hold strengthening
members and the points of stress.
8. Which places PSC will check in DB tank?
9. How will you care for statics developing in Crude Oil tankers where Crude Oil washing is carried
out ?
10. IMO requirement for Manoeuvring Criteria for any new built vessel.
