Final - Fall 2006

This document contains the final exam for a Calculus IV course given at Lebanese American University in Byblos on May 2, 2007. The 2 hour exam contains 7 multi-part problems testing skills in multivariate calculus, including: 1) Finding volumes using triple integrals in rectangular, cylindrical, and spherical coordinates and evaluating one. 2) Finding the area of an elliptic region cut from a plane by a cylinder. 3) Finding absolute maxima and minima of a function over a closed region. 4) Finding maximum and minimum of a function over a sphere. 5) Finding a line and surface integral over a curve that is the union of two paths. 6) Proving a field

Byblos

Calculus IV Date: 05/02/2007

Final exam Duration: 2h

1. We denote by V the volume of the region bounded below by the plane z = 0,

laterally by the cylinder x2 +y 2 = 1 and above by the paraboloid z = 2− x2
− y2.
(a) Express, without evaluating, the volume V as a triple integral using:
i. the rectangular coordinates,
ii. the cylindrical coordinates,
iii. the spherical coordinates.
(b) Find the volume V by evaluating one of the three triple integrals.

2. Find the area of the elliptic region cut from the plane 2x + 2y + z = 1 by the
cylinder x2 + y 2 = 1.

3. Find the absolute maxima and minima of the function f (x, y) = 2x2 + y 2 − x
over the closed region R which is in the disk x2 + y 2 ≤ 4 and above the line
y = − x + 2.

4. Find the maximum and the minimum of the function x − 2y + 5z over the
sphere x2 + y 2 + z 2 = 30.

5. Find the integral of f (x, y, z) = x2 − y + z over the curve C = C1 ∪ C2 where

• C1 is the part of the curve x2 + y 2 = 1 in the first quadrant of the xy-
plane from (0, 1, 0) to (1, 0, 0)
• C2 is the line segment in xz-plane from (1, 0, 0) to (1, 0, 1)

6. We consider the field F = (z cos xz)i + ey j + (x cos xz)k.

(a) Prove the F is conservative.
(b) Find a potential function for the field F.

7. Bonus question. Let F = M i + N j + P k be a continuous and conservative

velocity field and let f (x, y, z) be a potential function for F. We consider two
points A and B in the space and r(t) = x(t)i + y(t)j + z(t)k, a ≤ t ≤
b, a smooth curve joining A and B (that is A = (x(a), y(a), z(a)) and B
= (x(b), y(b), z(b))).

(a) Prove that along the curve r(t) we have = F· .
dt dt
(b) Deduce that the flow of F along the curve r(t) from t = a to t = b is
f (B) − f (A).
(c) Find the flow of the conservative velocity field F = 2i + (2y + z)j + (y + 1)k
over the curve r(t) = (t4 + t3 + 1)i + (t3 − t + 2)j + (t4 − t2 + 1)k from
t = 0 to t = 1.
