As early asthe spring of 1921, the consolidation and further development of threaded
and flanged fittings standards in force in this country seemed desirable. To meet this need,
the American Standards Association (ASA) [nowthe American National Standards Insti-
tute (ANSI)] authorized the organizationof a Sectional Committeeon the Standardization
of Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings(B16), with the Heating, Piping, and Air Conditioning
Contractors' National Association (now known the as Mechanical Contractors Association
of America),the ManufacturersStandardization Society ofthe Valve and Fittings Industry
(MSS), and The American Societyof Mechanical Engineers acting asjoint sponsors.
In June 1927, the Manufacturers Standardization Society of the Valve and Fittings In-
dustry appointed a committee on Nonferrous Screw Fittings for the purpose of developing
standards for products commonly designated as threaded pipe fittingsof brass, bronze,or
other nonferrous materials. At.the time brass threaded fittings were furnished from a num-
ber of different patterns with wide-variationsin dimensionsand weights.
MSS SP-10 for 125 lb Bronze Screwed Fittings and MSS SP-11 for 250 lb Bronze Screwed
Fittings were developed and adopted by the MSS in September, 1930. The lighter fittings
were patternedafter malleable iron threaded fittings, then standardizedin ASA BEC, while
the heavier products were patterned after the cast iron threaded fittings coveredby ASA
B16d. Thus a practice was standardized that had been found satisfactory in the valve and
fittings industry over many years.
Following the publication of revised editionsin 1941 and 1943, SP-10 was submitted to
SubcommitteeNo. 2 of ASASectional Committee B16 for adoption as an American Stand-
ard. Final approval of that edition was granted on January23, 1947 with the designation
ASA B16.15. A reaffirmation of the Standard was granted in 1952 and a complete revision
for updating the Standard was approved by ASA on March 25, 1958.
After revisionin 1944, SP-11was submitted to SubcommitteeNo. 2 in August,1947 and
ASA granted the approval of B16.17 on April 6, 1949.
In 1961, Subcommittee No.2 reviewed the two Standards and noted that the historical
reason for their separate existence no longer applied. Accordingly, the two were combined
into ASA B16.15 with final ASA approval granted on February 6, 1964.
In 1969, the document was reviewed by Subcommittee No. 2 and minor changes were
proposed, Final ANSI approval was granted on April 14, 1971,
In 1977, the MSS submitted aproposed revision to SubcommitteeB (formerly No.2) for
B16 review and approval. Changes includedthe addition of metric (SI) unitsand editorial
updating. ANSI granted final approval on December 4, 1978.
In 1982, American National Standards Committee B16 was reorganized as the ASME
B16 Committee, operating under procedures accredited by ANSI. The current revision, fol-
lowing regular five year review by Subcommittee B, involves rationalization of metric
equivalent dimensions and updating of reference standards. Following approval within
ASME, ANSI approval was granted on July 30, 1985 with the new designation ANSI/
ASME B16.15-1985.

TABLE 13 (CONT'DI:
GENERAL NOTE: Dimensions are in inches.
.NOTES:
(1) The addition of lugs on face bushings is not prohibited.
(2) For pressure class recommendations, see para. 2(d).
(3)Bushings reducing t o pipe sizes smaller than given are bushed from thesmallest reductionappearing in the table.
(4) Heads of bushings shall be hexagonal or octagonal.
(5) Metal thicknessG is thesame as Class 125 Cast Iron Threaded Fittings of ANSVASME B16.4. For tolerance, see para. 1O(a).
(6) To provide proper metalthickness, these sizes shall not be cored out todiameters greater than the root diameter of the internal
thread. The lengthof the internal thread may be equalto the minimum dimension B or greater, up to the full length
of bushing.
( 7 ) Bushings in thesesizes may be made fromregular hexagon or octagon bar stock sizes.
15
The technique of rounding the metric conversions of the inch dimensions recognized two
basic categories of dimensions occurring this Standard,
in based upon the function or safety
significance of variations in the dimensions.
Where some slight shift of the absolute value ofthe minimum and maximum dimensions
permitted by the inch dimensionsand those provided by the converted metric dimensions do
not unacceptably affect the functional or safety characteristics of the fitting, the metric con-
versions have been rounded to whole millimeter valuesorder in to facilitateease of measure-
ment by ordinary measuring tapes or rulers with nonmagnified vision.Furthermore, the
rounding has not aIways been madeto the nearest whole millimeter. In some casesit has
been madeto thewhole millimeter which would facilitatetables manifesting logical incre-
ments inboth the dimensions and their tolerances. It is recognizedthat the introduction of
such variances willcreatea conflict inthe acceptance dimensionsor gaging between the inch
and metric data. Experience indicates a probability that no serious difficultieswill result
from this conflict. Henceit is the intent of this Standard that any dimension which is within
toleranceby either metricor inch measurement is considered to be in conformance withthis
Standard.
Where it was considered advisableto limit the variance betweenthe minimum and maxi-
mum dimensions permitted the by existing tolerances and those permitted by the converted
metric dimensions, closer roundingwas utilized.
