4. EQUIPMENT USE
An RCD (Rotating Control Device) is a drill-though, rotating device that seals against the drill string (drill pipe,
casing, Kelly, etc.) to control wellbore pressure.
The RCD is typically mounted to the top of the annular BOP. BOPs should always be used in conjunction with an
RCD. RCDs should not be used without BOPs or to replace the BOP. The control console is typically mounted
on the rig floor in plain sight of the driller.

Figure 1. Location of RCD in drill string.

The wellbore pressure is diverted by an annular seal called a sealing element. Pressure is diverted through the
flow line to a single choke or series of chokes depending on the drilling setup.

M-I SWACO RCD 3

5.2 Functional Description

RCDs are used to create a rotary seal on drill pipe and divert annular flow.
The RCD 3 consists of a Bearing Assembly, a Sealing Element, and a Body and Clamp Assembly.
RCDs employ flexible sealing elements (3, Figure 3) to divert annular fluid in the well. Sealing elements rotate
with drill pipe and allow for expansion and contraction as tool joints pass through the internal diameter.
Conditions such as misalignment, tong marks on drill pipe, API grooves on drill pipe and other factors limit or
reduce the life of sealing elements.

Figure 3. Bolt-on sealing element.

RCDs are also used to prevent the exposure of hydrocarbons to the rig floor. As drilling occurs, unexpected rises
in pressure can be managed more effectively with an RCD. The RCD diverts pressure and drilling programs can
be modified as needed to work through pressure.
If uncontrolled gas escapes and ignites from mechanical friction sparks on the rig floor, explosions, injury, or
death can occur. RCDs divert gas away from the rig floor, reducing the likelihood of this potential hazard.

M-I SWACO RCD 3

6. HOISTING/LIFTING

WHEN LIFTING THE RCD 3, DO NOT TO DAMAGE THE SAFETY RELIEF VALVE.
CAUTION

The RCD 3 has Crosby swivels that screw into the top cap. The safety relief valve (orange) is located to the right
of the bottom swivel mounting hole.

Figure 4. Hoisting/lifting points.

USING ANY LIFTING OR HOISTING DEVICE AND ACCESSORY ITEM THAT IS NOT
RATED TO SUPPORT THE UNIT WEIGHT CAN CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH
FROM THE UNIT FALLING OR BEING UNCONTROLLED WHEN HANDLING.

1. When lifting or hoisting the RCD 3, use only equipment rated to support the unit weight.
2. Inspect any accessories such as sling straps or shackles being used to ensure they are in good condition and
rated to support the unit weight.
3. Screw two Crosby swivels into the top cap at the positions indicated in Figure 4.
4. Lift the unit evenly with two slings; one sling on each swivel.
5. Move the unit to the desired location and lower into place.
6. Remove the slings and the Crosby swivels.

M-I SWACO RCD 3

7. UNPACKING AND INSPECTING

Full service is required when a bearing assembly arrives at the facility marked as ‘used’ or is ‘Red-Tagged’. A
used bearing assembly is defined as having been used for at least one job or used in excess of 100 hours. A
Bearing Assembly should only be installed if it has been properly ‘Green-Tagged’.
1. Pressure-wash the complete RCD 3 and bearing assembly.
2. Inspect unit body for visible external damage (broken welds, corrosion, lifting lugs, dents, loose components,
etc.).
3. Inspect threads for wear and transport damage.
4. Confirm any third party certification (UL, ATEX, CE, etc.) requirements prior to performing mechanical
services. Contact the M-I SWACO QA department if necessary.
5. Check lifting certification dates.
6. Check for MPI inspection dates.
7. Review incoming inspection report and field maintenance logbook for documented problems.

8. PREPARING THE SITE FOR INSTALLATION

Verify that the well has been properly secured, for example blind rams closed, to prevent an object from falling
into the hole or material from flowing up to the working area.

9. PREPARING THE EQUIPMENT FOR INSTALLATION

Attach the proper sealing element to the bearing assembly (see 13.1).

17. ILLUSTRATED PARTS BREAKDOWN

The following figures and tables illustrate and identify various components that make up the RCD 3 assemblies
covered by this manual.
This information is provided so the user can accurately identify component part numbers and quantities when
ordering replacement parts. This information may also be useful when performing maintenance and repair tasks or
when making a request for technical assistance from an M-I SWACO representative.

SUBSTITUTING COMMON "OFF THE SHELF" HARDWARE CAN CAUSE PERSONAL

INJURY OR UNIT DAMAGE DUE TO HARDWARE FAILURE.

WARNING SUBSTITUTING STANDARD "OFF THE SHELF" SEALS CAN CAUSE PERSONAL
INJURY OR UNIT DAMAGE DUE TO SEAL FAILURE.

The hardware used to assemble this unit is specifically selected to withstand the high pressure stresses and
corrosive environment the unit may be subjected to. It is important that only approved hardware and materials be
used when installing or maintaining the RCD 3. Common hardware exposed to H2S gas may fail from hydrogen
embrittlement.
Seal kit parts are controlled by manufacture date and shelf life. The seals have been specifically selected to meet
the demanding temperature and pressure specifications of this unit. Only M-I SWACO-approved seals are to be
used. No substitutions permitted!
17.1 Looking Up Parts Information
1. Determine the finished good assembly and configuration you have then locate the figure associated with it.
2. Locate the component you need on the figure and note the ballooned item number pointing to it.
3. Look up the item number on the associated parts list to identify the part number, description, and quantity used.
4. The tables contain various columns of information. Each column title is described as follows.
 ITEM: List of ballooned numbers found on the figures to identify a component part.
 PART NUMBER: Number used when ordering a specific component part.
 DESCRIPTION: Generalized description of the component part that may include limited specifications.
 ASSY QTY: The quantity of individual component parts found in a particular assembly figure.
 SPARES QTY: The quantity of individual component parts recommended to have on-hand at any given
time to maintain your RCD 3 with minimal down-time.
