4. EQUIPMENT USE
An RCD (Rotating Control Device) is a drill-though, rotating device that seals against the drill string (drill pipe,
casing, Kelly, etc.) to control wellbore pressure.
The RCD is typically mounted to the top of the annular BOP. BOPs should always be used in conjunction with an
RCD. RCDs should not be used without BOPs or to replace the BOP. The control console is typically mounted
on the rig floor in plain sight of the driller.
5. EQUIPMENT FUNCTION
5.1 Identification of Main Components
RCDs are also used to prevent the exposure of hydrocarbons to the rig floor. As drilling occurs, unexpected rises
in pressure can be managed more effectively with an RCD. The RCD diverts pressure and drilling programs can
be modified as needed to work through pressure.
If uncontrolled gas escapes and ignites from mechanical friction sparks on the rig floor, explosions, injury, or
death can occur. RCDs divert gas away from the rig floor, reducing the likelihood of this potential hazard.
6. HOISTING/LIFTING
WHEN LIFTING THE RCD 3, DO NOT TO DAMAGE THE SAFETY RELIEF VALVE.
CAUTION
The RCD 3 has Crosby swivels that screw into the top cap. The safety relief valve (orange) is located to the right
of the bottom swivel mounting hole.
USING ANY LIFTING OR HOISTING DEVICE AND ACCESSORY ITEM THAT IS NOT
RATED TO SUPPORT THE UNIT WEIGHT CAN CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH
FROM THE UNIT FALLING OR BEING UNCONTROLLED WHEN HANDLING.
1. When lifting or hoisting the RCD 3, use only equipment rated to support the unit weight.
2. Inspect any accessories such as sling straps or shackles being used to ensure they are in good condition and
rated to support the unit weight.
3. Screw two Crosby swivels into the top cap at the positions indicated in Figure 4.
4. Lift the unit evenly with two slings; one sling on each swivel.
5. Move the unit to the desired location and lower into place.
6. Remove the slings and the Crosby swivels.
10. INSTALLING/RIG-UP
1. Attach the RCD 3 body to the BOP.
2. Attach the outlet piping to the body.
3. Using the handling process in paragraph 6, lift the bearing assembly with sealing element.
4. Open the clamp assembly.
5. Move the bearing assembly to the body and lower it into place.
6. Close and latch the clamp assembly.
7. Remove the slings and the Crosby swivels.
BEFORE WORKING ON THE RCD 3 THRU BORE, LOCK OUT AND TAG THE SYSTEM.
WARNING
1. Attach Crosby swivels to the top cap lifting points indicated in Figure 4.
2. Attach properly rated and inspected slings to the Crosby swivels.
3. Open the clamp assembly.
4. Lift the bearing assembly with sealing element out of the body (Figure 6).
5. Inspect the sealing element for excessive wear or any damage.

13. Remove the lifting shackles and slings.
15. PACKING
15.1 For Transportation
The bearings are transported in a wooden crate. They can be laid on their side and strapped to a pallet, being sure
not to damage the safety relief valve. If strapping to a pallet, use cardboard or wood so the straps don’t cause
damage to the bearing.
15.2 For Extended Storage
THE RCD 3 SHOULD NOT BE STORED OUTSIDE. THIS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO
THE EQUIPMENT.
CAUTION
1. Shrink-wrap the bearing around the bottom and top. The O-rings need to be protected when shrink wrapped.
2. Store the RCD 3 in a dry place; never leave outside.
WARNING SUBSTITUTING STANDARD "OFF THE SHELF" SEALS CAN CAUSE PERSONAL
INJURY OR UNIT DAMAGE DUE TO SEAL FAILURE.
The hardware used to assemble this unit is specifically selected to withstand the high pressure stresses and
corrosive environment the unit may be subjected to. It is important that only approved hardware and materials be
used when installing or maintaining the RCD 3. Common hardware exposed to H2S gas may fail from hydrogen
embrittlement.
Seal kit parts are controlled by manufacture date and shelf life. The seals have been specifically selected to meet
the demanding temperature and pressure specifications of this unit. Only M-I SWACO-approved seals are to be
used. No substitutions permitted!
