1.1 Purpose

2.1 CORING
3.0 EQUIPMENT
The equipment to be used for the tests is as per the table below:
The selection of the locations for extraction of core samples will be made and
marked.
A re-bar locator will be used to ensure there are no reinforcing bars where the core
is to be taken.
The cores will be visually inspected and photographed giving specific attention
towards compaction of concrete (air void visualization), distribution
of aggregates and presence of steel
The concrete cores will then be soaked in water, capped with mortar so as to make
its ends plane, parallel and at the right angle.
The extracted cores will also be subjected to a series of other tests to serve multiple
functions such as:
a. Confirming the mix composition of the concrete and
b. Determining other properties of the concrete not attainable by Schmidt
hammer method.
4.2 Rebound (Schmidt hammer) Test
A Schmidt Hammer- MATEST C386N- will be used.
The rebound number readings on the scale of the hammer to the nearest whole
number will be read and recorded. Ten readings will be taken from each test area.
No two impact tests shall be closer together than 25 mm (1 in.). If the impact
crushes or breaks through a near-surface air void the reading will be disregarded
and another reading taken. The test area will be 150x150 mm.
Readings differing from the average of 10 readings by more than 6 units will be
discarded and the average of the remaining readings determined. If more than 2
readings differ from the average by 6 units, the entire set of readings will be
discarded and rebound numbers at 10 new locations determined within the test
area.
The average rebound numbers shall be converted into concrete crushing strength
using appropriate calibration scales.

7.0 SAFETY
The testing team will adhere to the site safety policy and appreciate their
individual responsibilities for themselves and other workers at the site
