WHAT IS THIS MODULE ALL ABOUT?

In our daily life, we always struggle to find solutions to problems

we encounter. May it be for enhancement, improvement, development
or innovation to uplift or make our life more convenient. We gather
information and entertain queries or inquiry to find probable answers
to questions or problems. Thus, Mathematics has become part of our
daily life.
Mathematics is noticeable in our lives at all ages and in any
circumstances. This module aims senior high school students to be
critical thinkers and problem solvers and to empower students with
lifelong learning and helps them attain functional literacy. Each
lesson in the module is presented with easy to follow examples and
exercises. The items in the set of exercises are intended to aid the
learners in understanding the concepts presented in the lesson and
strengthen the skills of the students in computing, reasoning, arriving
at conjectures or conclusions, proving and decision making. Thus,
engaging the learners for a higher level thinking skills.
In this module, you will be encountering and tackling
Functions, rational functions, exponential, logarithmic and basic
concepts in business math and logic.

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO LEARN?

After studying this unit, you are expected to distinguished
rational function, rational equation and rational inequality

HOW ARE YOU GOING TO LEARN?

answer to determine how much you about the
topic. At every pre-test, you will find a question
to answer. Write your answers in the blank

provided for or as instructed in the pre-test. If
you cannot answer a question may leave it
blank. But see to it that you go back to check
after you have studied or read the text.

You will find this icon before some chunks of

text in the following pages. It tells you to
carefully study the concepts, principles, or
processes discussed in the text. It also tells you
that there is a question to answer or an idea to
think about it.

This icon introduces a list of important ideas to

remember. Read it carefully and keep it in
mind.

From the good habit of reviewing the text and

how much time, effort, interest and patience
you invest in your learning will determine how
sure you are in having good scores in the
checkpoint. Your attitude will help you learn
more and effectively that makes you a better
learner.

You will find this icon at the end of every

lesson. It signals a self-test to determine how
well you have achieved the objectives set in the
unit. Study the lesson well and you will perform
quite well in the self-test. This will be submitted
to your teacher after you answering the self-
test. Write legibly and always follow
instructions properly.

This icon tells you of an assignment you have to

perform. The quality of your output from this
assignment will show the extent to which you
can apply what have you learned from the
lesson. Submit this also to your teacher at the
date specified.

Are you now set to perform the activity, answer the questions,
and read the texts? If so, then you may get your ball pen and
notebook as I will request you to answer the questions included
herein.
Good luck, enjoy reading and doing the activity. God bless.

LESSON 1: Functions

PRE-TEST AND SELF-CHECK

Solve the following equations:

 Equation with one Variable: An equation who have only one variable,
e.g.
1. 12x – 10 = 0
 Equation with two Variables: An equation who have two variables, e.g.
1. 12x +10y – 10 = 0
2. 12x +23y = 20

INTRODUCTION

Rational Function,
Rational Equation and
Rational Inequality

Rational Functions are just those with polynomials (expression

with two or more algebraic terms) in the numerator and
denominator, so they are the ratio of two polynomials.

Introducing Rational Expressions

Again, think of a rational expression as a ratio of two
polynomials.

5
Here are some examples of expressions that are and aren’t rational
expressions:
Expression Rational? Explanation

X2−1 / X+3 Yes Ratio of two polynomials

1 / X Yes Ratio of two polynomials.  “1” is a constant monomial.

Note that this polynomial is technically a rational expression, but we

 X3 / 81    Yes
typically think of them as having a variable in the denominator.

No The numerator isn’t a polynomial, because of the radical.

6
Examples of How to Solve Rational
Equations
Example 1: Solve the rational equation below and make sure
you check your answers for extraneous values.
5/x - 5/6 = 5/3
Would it be nice if the denominators are not there? Well, we
can’t simply vanish them without any valid algebraic step.
The approach is to find the Least Common Denominator
(also known Least Common Multiple) and use that to
multiply both sides of the rational equation. It results in
the removal of the denominators, leaving us with regular
equations that we already know how to solve such as linear
and quadratic. That is the essence of solving rational
equations.
The LCD is 6x6x. I will multiply both sides of the rational
equation by 6x6x to eliminate the denominators. That’s our
goal anyway – to make our life much easier.
(6x) 5/x - 5/6 = 5/3 (6x)

7
You should have something like this after distributing the
LCD.
30 – 5x = 10x
I decided to keep the variable x on the right side. So remove
the −5x on the left by adding both sides by 5x.
30 – 5x + 5x = 10x + 5x
30 = 15x
Yep! The final answer is x = 2

after checking it back into the original rational equation. It

yields a true statement.

Activity 1 :

Activity 2:

Activity 3 :
“Paper-pen test” (Individual activity)
In a ½ crosswise intermediate paper, answer the following questions.
For numbers 1-4, determine whether the given is a rational function, rational equation,
a rational inequality or none of these.
3+ x
1. =6
x−1
2. x > √ x+3

8
x+ 2
3. f ( x )=6−
x 2−4
3+ x
4. 2 x ≥
x−1
5. The distance from Valencia City to Cagayan de Oro City is around
180 km.
a) How long will it take you to get to CDO if your average speed
is 25 kph? 50 kph? 100 kph?
b) Construct a function t(v) describing the time it will take to
travel from Valencia to CDO v is the speed of travel.

Guide Questions:
Determine whether the given is a rational function, a rational equation
and a rational inequality or none of these.
1. 2 + X / X – 1 = 8
2. f(x) = 6 - X/5
3. 8X ≤ 80/2X
4. 250 – 10/X2 ≥ 300

SELF-CHECK.

Directions: Do as directed. Write your answer on a separate

sheet of paper.
GUIDED ACTIVITY 4
For numbers 1-4, determine whether the given is a rational function, rational
equation, a rational inequality or none of these.
8+ x
1. ≤6
x−1
2. x > √ x+3
x+ 2
3. f ( x )=6−
x 2−4
