The document discusses experiments on balancing rotating masses in single and multiple planes and explains the importance of balancing rotating masses in real-world applications like fans.

In a single plane, when a mass is off-center, it will cause vibration. When masses are balanced, there is no net centrifugal force and the system is balanced with no vibration.

In multiple planes, a system can be statically balanced but not dynamically balanced if there is a resultant centrifugal couple. Balancing both forces and couples leads to a balanced system.

Discussions

a) Explain the results obtained from the balancing of rotating masses for single plane
From the results obtained for the balancing of rotating masses for single plane, all the
experimental conditions are the same as the theoretical conditions for experiment a to f, for
experiment a, the system is not in a balanced condition. This is because there is a mass, m of
radius, r from the center of rotation of the disc. This results in the producing of centrifugal force
which acted away from the center of rotation. Therefore, when the disc is rotated, the disc is
vibrating and balanced condition cannot be achieved. For experiment b to f, there is no resultant
centrifugal force in the system. All the centrifugal forces have been balanced by the
counterbalancing masses. Thus, they are in a balanced conditions.

b) Explain the results obtained from the balancing of rotating masses for multiple plane

From the results obtained for balancing of rotating masses for multiple plane, all the
experimental conditions for both static and dynamic conditions are the same as the theoretical
conditions for both static and dynamic conditions. In experiment a, eventhough the static balance
is achieved, the dynamic balance is not achieved. When the motor is switched on, the system is
vibrating. This is due to the resultant centrifugal couple in the disc. For experiment b to d, both
static and dynamic balances are achieved. All the centrifugal forces and centrifugal couples are
balanced by the counterbalancing weight. Thus, the system is in a balanced condition.
c) Give an example on the application of balancing of rotating masses in real time world
and describe why balancing of rotating masses is important

An example on the application of the balancing of the rotating masse is the table fan or ceiling
fan. This is a case of a single plane rotating mass and the fan is said to be in static balance if the
fan is rotating at any speed without vibrating. The balancing of rotating mass is important
because it can reduce the unwanted vibration due to imbalanced condition of a rotating mass.
Also, it can reduce the energy waste so it will increase the efficiency of the machine. Not only
that, if a rotating mass is not balanced, the vibrating part will wear out in a shorter period of time.
This is included the bearing due to large forces act on them. Last but not least, when the shaft is
unbalanced, it might bend when it is rotating so it is subjected to compression and expansion
alternatively and thus fail easily. In short, balancing of rotating mass is so important to have a
long life time of the machine parts in a rotating mass.
