CENTRAL MEDICAL GAS SYSTEM STRUCTURE

Centrally supplied medical gas system is a modern solution to gas supply in healthcare facilities.

ISO 7396-1:2016 specifies requirements for design, installation, function, performance, testing, commissioning
and documentation of pipeline systems used in healthcare facilities. There are also other standards like ISO
9001 and ISO 13485 Quality and Management System, 93/42/ EEC EK-2 Medical Devices Directive ISO 14971, EN
15223, EN 60601-1, EN 9170-1, EN 104I International Standards HTM 02-01 Medical Copper Pipeline Systems. I
followed their specifications.

Generally central medical gas system consists of:

• Liquid oxygen tank

• Medical gas manifolds
• Vacuum plant
• Air plant
• AGSS plant
• Zone valves
• Terminal units (outlets)
• Pipeline system
• Alarm system

A central manifold room and a monitoring room is a must need for proper operation of central medical gas
system.

Liquid oxygen tank

This should be the primary source of oxygen supply in hospitals. But most of the hospitals don’t have
enough space for that. They can go for cylinder supply system. A vacuum insulated evaporator (VIE)
tank is installed within the hospital premise for storing liquid oxygen. This tank is used as main
source of oxygen and connected with main building through pipeline network.

Medical gas manifolds

According to ISO 7396-1, medical gas manifolds consists of two-side cylinder supply with automatic
change over between empty and full side. If any hospital have liquid tank then this could be used as
secondary gas supply for oxygen otherwise it is the main source for both oxygen and other medical
gases.

Vacuum plant

Central Medical Vacuum Supply System is used to provide a reliable and continuous suction in various
departments of a hospital, such as Operation Theaters, Intensive Care Units, Coronary and Neonatal
Care Units, Delivery and Emergency Departments and also Patient wards. Medical Vacuum Plants are
designed to meet the requirements of HTM 2022, C11 and EN 737 with a quality scheme of
manufacturing according to ISO 9001:2000, EN 46001:1997, ISO 13485:2001, and the Plants are CE
marked to meet the requirements of Medical Device Directive 93/42/EEC.

Medical Vacuum Plant Equipment:

• Vacuum Pumps
• Digital Electrical Control Panel
• Bacterial Filter Group
• Vacuum Reservoir
• Flexible Connection
• Reservoir Collector
• The connection between the unit elements
Air plant

Medical Air Plants are used to supply medical quality air for Respiration and Surgical needs. Medical
and Surgical Air are used generally in Operation Theaters, Intensive and Coronary Care Units, Delivery,
Neonatal and Emergency Departments.
Medical Air Plant Main Parts:

• Air Compressors
• Heatless Desiccant Duplex Dryer
• Electrical Control Panel including Alarm Systems
• 4 bar and 7 bar Regulation Group
• Filter Group, Oil, Odor, Bacteria and Sterile Filters Group
• Pressed Air Receiver
• Connection Equipment between units

AGSS plant

Anesthesia Gas Scavenging System is used to discharge anesthesia gas directly from the patient or
anesthesia machine with the help of Air mixer, AGS outlet pipe and AGS exhaust to create a clean
environment free of anesthesia gas in operating rooms.

Zone valves

It is made of electrostatic powder coated steel sheet. It consists of valves mounted in one box. Valves
are ball valves. At first glance, the open-closed state is evident. The front cover of the valve boxes is
glazed and locked. In any emergency, the glass can be broken and the valve can be reached. It is the
unit that cuts the gas of the relevant department in case of any breakdown and provides maintenance
and service opportunity without affecting other parts. It is designed with 1-2-3-4-5 gas.
Terminal units

Medical Gas Outlets are terminal units of medical gas pipeline system providing quick and easy
connection of hospital ward gas equipment to the hospital gas source. We offer DIN, AGA, AFNOR or
BS standard. Medical gas outlets are available with metal or plastic second fix.

Pipeline system

The medical gases used in a hospital are life saving elements for the patients. It has to be cent per
cent pure and clean. That’s why a copper piping network is needed for easy transportation of gases
from manifold room to patient beds. There is a central riser pipe which come out from manifold
room and goes through every floor and connects facilitated room via several branches. The pipe
specifications vary from floor to floor according to pipes purposes.

Alarm system

There must be a central alarm in manifold room. Also there should be alarm panels in every section
of the hospital.
