    Professional Practice Community Engagement:

    During my experience at Macarthur Girls High School, I have encountered many situations
    that have contributed to my learning experience and development as a beginning teacher. For
    instance, my experience in a mixed ‘Humanities’ classroom with many students and 3
    teachers has broadened my perspective of teaching and education. It has taught me the benefit
    of the challenging mainstream understandings of classroom setting. Through my observation,
    I have become conscious of the way in which various teachers in a classroom can benefit the
    learning experience of students. For example, the lesson with various teachers made teacher-
    student communication more effective. Similarly, it has allowed students’ needs to be met
    more efficiently. Through being exposed to such learning environments, the goals I have set
    for myself has been successfully met. In relation to this, I have set various goals to achieve
    during my service learning activities. The goals involved ones which were easy to achieve
    and contributed to my overall learning experience. For example, one of my goals was to
    carefully observe and examine different teachers and their individual teaching methods. This
    was achievable as I was exposed to a learning environment with various teachers.
    Consequently, I had the opportunity to examine the different ways that each teacher
    approached and taught the same class. In addition, my observation and presence within the
    classroom broadened my understanding of the different pedagogical approaches. As a result, I
    was able to apply my understanding to the context of my service learning project. Through
    doing so, I was able to successfully help teachers throughout my service learning project.
    Furthermore, I believe that participants in my service learning project learned various things
    from my participation. For example, throughout my time at the school, I mostly assisted
    students with work that they found difficult during the lessons. In this situation, I took on the
    job of an SLSO and applied the different teaching strategies I had observed from the different
    teachers to help the students learn best. Likewise, I altered my way of communicating with
    different students to fit their specific levels of understanding. Through doing so, I believe that
    I helped broaden students’ perspectives on the different ways that they could attain
    information and understand the content more thoroughly. Furthermore, my observation of
    different and experienced teachers contributed to my overall learning experience. In relation,
    I learned various ways of differentiating the curriculum and different ways to effectively
    teach the same lesson. Overall, through my observation of different and experienced teachers
    within the classroom, I picked up on various ways of differentiating the curriculum and
    different ways to effectively teach a lesson. I believe that this was a significant aspect of my
    learning experience at the school as it helped to further develop my views of effective
    pedagogy. This is especially important for my learning experience as a future teacher as it
    will help shape me as an effective teacher in various classroom settings. Similarly, my
    experience at Macarthur Girls High School has provided me with the opportunity to pick up
    some ideas regarding effective teaching and acquire the skillset that will help shape me as a
    proficient future teacher. Ultimately, my participation has allowed me to achieve the AITSL
    standards that require student-teachers to undertake a thorough and valuable learning
    experience.
