mechanics
Pr. 1: Consider a rigid frictionless symmetric punch that indents the half plane S + i.e y > 0
under the action of a resultant force X. The contact surface of the punch has a
profile given by y = f (x), where f (x) is an even function with f (0) = 0. Contact is
maintained over |x| ≤ a so that the half plane S + suffers the indentation
v = f (x) + C, on y = 0, |x| ≤ a.
Here C is a real constant. Using the principle of analytic continuation and the K-M
equations, find the expression for Ω0 (z) suitable for this problem. Specialise this to
the case of a frictionless flat punch for which f 0 (x) = 0.
Pr. 2: Determine the stress distribution under a smooth wedge shaped punch having a profile
y = −x, (0 ≤ x ≤ l) which is in partial contact with the half plane S + . What is the
maximum force required to ensure complete contact with S + ?
Pr. 3: Using the solution to the problem of the crack with pressurised faces done in the class,
show that an unstressed crack in an infinite plate with remote load of σ∞ has
σ∞ 2iφ σ∞ z σ∞ 2iφ
Ω0 (z) = 1 − e2iφ √ , θ0 (z) =

e + e .
4 4 z 2 − a2 2
Here, φ is the inclination of the remote load to the line of the crack.
Pr. 4: A composite material has two materials occupying S + (material # 1) and S − 1 (mate-
rial #2) bonded along y = 0, except over a region L on y = 0. Show that the complex
potentials Ω1 (z), ω1 (z) and Ω2 (z), ω2 (z) in the two media satisfy:
(µ1 + µ2 κ1 )Ω1 (z) = µ1 θ(z) + φ(z)
(µ2 + µ1 κ2 )Ω2 (z) = µ2 θ(z) + φ(z)
ω1 (z) = Ω2 (z̄) − zΩ01 (z) − θ(z̄)
ω2 (z) = Ω1 (z̄) − zΩ02 (z) − θ(z̄)
Pr. 5: Consider a crack in an infinite plate over the region |x| ≤ a on y = 0. The upper and
lower faces of the crack are subjected to point forces ±P e2 at be1 , where ei are the
base vectors of a Cartesian system centered at the crack. The Westergaard function
for this problem is
 2 1/2
P a − b2
Z= .
π(z − b) z 2 − a2
Show that p
K1 = lim 2πζZ,
|ζ|→0

where, ζ is a complex variable measured from the crack tip at x = a. Also, prove that,
for this problem, r
P a+b
KI = √ .
