MORSE TEST ON MULTI CYLINDER PETROL ENGINE

(AMBASSADOR ENGINE)

AIM:
To perform the Morse test on the given multi cylinder petrol engine and to
determine the efficiency at the given load

APPARATUS REQUIRED:
1. Multi Cylinder Petrol Engine Test Rig
2. Tachometer
3. Stop watch

SPECIFICATIONS:
Engine : Multi cylinder, ambassador engine

Type : water cooled, 4-s petrol engine.

Rated power : 32 kW @ 3200 rpm

Rated idling speed (N) : 650 rpm - 3500 rpm

Bore Diameter (D) : 73.02 mm

Stroke Length (L) : 88.9 mm

Compression Ratio : 9:2:1

Fuel : Petrol

Calorific value of petrol (CV) : 47,200 KJ/Kg

DESCRIPTION OF TEST RIG:

The petrol engine is a 4 cylinder, four strokes, water cooled, vertical type coupled
with electrical dynamometer. The fuel consumption of the engine is measured with a
burette, fitted on the fuel line. The consumption rate of the air is measured with the help

of air tank fitted with an orifice. The air tank is connected with the engine inlet manifold
through a flexible pipe.

BRAKE POWER :
BP = (2πNT) / 60

Where,
T = Brake Torque (W * L)

W – Load in Newton

L – Distance between shaft axis and the point of suspension

N - Rpm.

FORMULAE:

Brake power when all cylinders are working, BP 1234 = ( 2πNT1234 )/ (60*1000) KW.

Where, T is the torque developed in N-m

Brake power when first cylinder is cutoff, BP234 = ( 2πNT234) / (60*1000) KW.

Brake power when second cylinder is cutoff, BP134 = ( 2πNT134) / ( 60*1000) KW.

Brake power when third cylinder is cutoff, BP124 = ( 2πNT124) / (60*1000) KW.

Brake power when fourth cylinder is cutoff, BP123 = ( 2πNT123) / (60*1000) KW.

Indicated power of the first cylinder IP1 = (BP1234) – (BP234) KW

Indicated power of second cylinder IP2 = ( BP1234) – (BP134) KW

Indicated power of third cylinder IP3 = ( BP1234) – (BP124) KW.

Indicated power of fourth cylinder IP4 = ( BP1234) - ( BP123) KW.

IP1234 = IP1+IP2+IP3+IP4
Mechanical efficiency (ηм) = {( BP1234) / (IP1234)} * 100 %

PROCEDURE:

 Before starting the engine keep the fuel cut off level in ON position.
 Start the engine using starter motor.
 Allow the engine to run at no load for about 10 minutes to warm up and attain
steady state condition.
 Load the engine to the required level.
 When the engine is loaded to the required load adjust the throttle to maintain the
speed of the engine at its rated rpm.
 Allow few minutes for the engine attains steady state condition and note down the
load when all the cylinders are developing power.
 Cut off cylinder no.1 by lifting the cutoff switch no.1
 Bring the engine again to rated speed by adjusting the load on brake drum and not
by adjusting the throttle and note down the corresponding load on the engine.
 Similarly cut off the cylinder.2,3,4 and repeat the above procedure to find the load
on the engine for cylinder.
 Remove the load from the engine and stop the engine by switching off the ignition
switch.

PRECAUTIONS:

 The engine should not be started or stopped under loaded condition.

 The lubricating oil level should be ensured before starting the engine.

 The engine cooling water supply should be ensured before starting the engine.
