Communication
⮚ essential for personal and professional effectiveness
⮚ helps establish good relationships
⮚ creates a better working environment
⮚ strengthens collaboration and cooperation

(2018)
Globalization

institutions view it differently
Globalization
process by which people and
goods move easily across borders
Globalization
an economic concept - the
integration of markets, trade and
investments with few barriers to
slow the flow of products and
services between nations.
Globalization
There is also a cultural element, as
ideas and traditions are traded and
assimilated. (Madrunio & Martin,
pp. 92-95)
Globalization
The basic concept of globalization is-
the expansion and integration of the
cultural, political, economic, and
technological domains of the countries
Globalization
Process through which local and regional
ideas, products, and practices and
transformed into world wide ideas,
products, and practices. ( Griffin and
Bone, 201)
How did globalization happen?
✔Globalization has been around for
centuries.

the free trade of goods and services all over

the world has brought multinational
companies and foreign investors to our
shores
What drives it?
Globalization has speeded up
enormously over the last half-century due
to:
 Colonization
marked the beginning of globalization

✔The Philippines and other countries have

their share of stories on how colonization
shaped their social, economic and
education systems without necessarily
being disconnected from their own
countries’ local methods of civilization.
 Diaspora
connected with the dispersion of Jews beyond Israel.
(Oxford Dictionary)
⮚ a phenomenon that refers to people’s movement
and inhabitation in countries outside of their own,
known as migration.

 Immigration provides us a picture of fluidity

among peoples from different races where new
networks of economy and cultures are
established.
 Technological Advancement
Examples:
✔ the development of Internet -has
revolutionized connectivity and communication,
and helped people share their ideas much more
widely
▪ Email - made communication faster than ever
✔ the invention of enormous container ships
- improvements in transport generally, faster
ships, trains and airplanes enabled us to move
around globe much more easily
How does globalization affect
communication?
• With the advent of globalization associated with
advanced technologies and systems across
regions, the flow of information and
communication has become smoother, faster
and easier.
• Business transactions and partnerships among
local and international institutions have become
more efficient.
Consequently, the context of globalization
requires effective communication skills from
students and workers to cope with the demands
and challenges brought about by this
phenomenon. This includes: communicating
effectively with people of different background,
age, culture, gender, beliefs, orientations,
preferences, and status.
How does globalization affect communication?

With globalization, a need for a common

language to achieve international intelligibility is
appropriate.

“On almost any basis, English is the nearest thing

there has been to a global language…much
greater than anything achieved historically by
Latin or French. Many would reasonably claim
that in the fields of business, academics, science,
computing, education, transportation, politics
and entertainment, English is already established
as the decto lingua franca”

Done poorly, “to disaster”.
