This document outlines a teaching guide for a lesson on disaster readiness and risk reduction management. The lesson focuses on introducing the basic concepts of hazards, including defining hazards, classifying hazards into different types, and explaining the impacts of various hazards on exposed elements. The lesson will be 4 hours and 30 minutes and include lecture, group discussions, and an activity where students identify and role play the impacts of hazards in different locations. Key points that will be covered include defining hazards, classifying hazards into natural, quasi-natural and technological categories, listing examples of different types of hazards, and explaining the physical, psychological, socio-cultural, economic, environmental, and biological impacts of hazards.

hazards
Explain the impact of various hazards on
different exposed
Time Allotment 4 hours and 30 minutes
Teaching Strategy Lecture and Group Discussion

LESSON OUTLINE
I- Introduction The group assigned will do the following:
 Opening prayer
 Recap for the day
Teacher will present the topic for the week and give
brief introduction.
II- Motivation Definition of Hazard
1. Recall a recent or historical disastrous event.
Ask the learners to tell the class what they
know about it.
2. Introduce the basic definition of Hazard and
Disaster. Cold call learners to highlight the
difference between the two terms.
III- Instruction/ Delivery Introduction:
One important key to safety is understanding a
particular incident or phenomenon that may affect
people’s life. An ordinary incident or natural
phenomenon may turn into hazard once it becomes
active and poses harm or danger to life property. This
is the basic concept of hazard everyone should be
aware of.

Definition of Hazards
Are those elements of the physical environment,
harmful to man and caused by forces extraneous to
him.(Burton et al 1978)
Standards Australia (2000) defines hazards as:
“A source of potential harm or a situation with a
potential to cause loss”.
Asian Disaster Preparedness Center( ADPC) describes
hazards as: “ A Natural event that has the potential to
cause harm or loss.”
USGS Hazard Terminologies defines hazard as “a
phenomenon or situation, which has the potential to
cause the disruption or damage to people, their
property, their services and their environment”.

General Classification of Hazards

1. Natural Hazards- such as earth quakes or
floods arise from purely natural process in the
environment
2. Quasi- natural hazards- such as smog or
desertification that arise through the interaction
of natural processes and human activities
3. Technological- ( or human made) hazards such
as the toxicity or pesticides to agricultural
lands, accidental leaks of chemicals from
chemical laboratories or radiation from a
nuclear plant. These arise directly as a result of
human activities
Types of Hazards
1. ATMOSPHERI ATMOSPHERIC
C (combined)
(single element)  Hurricanes
 Excess rainfall  Glaze’ storm
 Freezing rain  Thunderstorm
 Hail  Blizzards
 Heavy snow falls  Tornadoes
 High wind speed  Heat/cold stress
 Extreme
temperature
2. HYDROLOGIC 3. GEOLOGIC
 Floods  Mass movement
 Wave Landslides
action Mudslides
 Drought Avalanches
 Rapid  Earthquake
glacier  Volcanic
advance Eruption
 Rapid sediment
movement
4. BIOLOGIC 5. TECHNOLOGIC
 Epidemic in  Transportation

 Epidemic in  Industrial
plants explosion and
 Epidemic in  Accidental
animals release of toxic
 Locusts element
 Nuclear
accidents
 Collapse of
public building
 Cyber terrorism

Impacts of Various Hazards on Different Exposed

Elements

The following are common long term impacts of

natural hazards like earthquake, typhoon, flashflood,
volcanic eruption, fire etc,;
Physical Impact
 Death of people
 Destruction and loss of vital infrastructure like
transport system, roads, bridges, power lines,
and communication lines
 Widespread loss of housing
Psychological Impact
 Grief and psychological trauma
 Marital conflicts
 Depression due to loss of loved ones and
properties
 Chronic anxiety among children severely
affected
Socio-Cultural Impact
 Displacement of populations
 Loss of cultural identity
 Forced adoption of new sets of culture
 Ethnic conflicts
Economic Impact
 Loss of job due to displacement
 Loss of harvest and livestock
 Loss of farms, fish cages, and other sources of
living
 Loss of money and other valuables like
jewelries, furniture and appliances
Environmental Impact
 Loss of forests due to forest fires
 Loss of fresh water due to situation- intrusion
of salt water to fresh water sources
 Disturbance of biodiversity
 Loss of natural rivers and other tributaries
Biological Impact
 Epidemic to people, flora and fauna
 Chronic and permanent illness due to nuclear
radiation
 Mental disorder developed from consumption
of contaminated foods
 Proliferation of different viral and bacterial
diseases
IV- Practice Activity: Identifying Impacts of Hazards
Role Play
1. This activity is meant for the leaners to think
independently and their quick analysis on the
impacts of certain hazards according to
specific locations. Teacher will give the Map
of locations and suggested scenario
2. Divide the class into 6 groups. Explain to the
class that this activity is meant to let them
imagine the impacts of certain phenomena on
specific settings.
V-Enrichment 1. Make the learners think of other specific
hazards that would fall under Geological,
hydro meteorological, or man-made/
technological hazards
VI – Evaluation Oral recitation
