COCKPIT VOICE RECORDER SYSTEM — ADJUSTMENT / TEST


1. Cockpit Voice Recorder — Operational Test
NOTE: This procedure tests all 4 channels of Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) for proper operation.
A. Preparation
SPECIAL TOOLS AND TEST EQUIPMENT

Headphones (600 ohm) ......................................................................... GSE2300098 or equivalent

(2) Aircraft Preparation
(a) Prepare aircraft for safe ground maintenance. See Safe Ground Maintenance
Procedure, 20-00-00, Maintenance Practices.
(b) Apply electrical power to aircraft. See External Electrical Power Application, 20-20-10,
Maintenance Practices.
(c) On Cockpit Overhead Panel (COP) in DISPLAY SYSTEM CONTROL section, select
switches as follows:
• DU 1 switch NORM
• DU 2 switch NORM
• DU 3 switch NORM
• DU 4 switch NORM
WARNING: FAILURE TO INSTALL ALL LANDING GEAR AND LANDING GEAR
DOOR SAFETY DEVICES BEFORE WORKING IN ANY WHEEL WELL
MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
(d) Install all landing gear and landing gear door safety devices. See Landing Gear Door
Operation, 32-00-00, Maintenance Practices.
(e) Ensure WOW switches are in ground mode.
NOTE: If aircraft is on jacks, GSE3200907 weight on wheels wedge is the only
authorized tool to put this system in ground configuration mode.
(f) Ensure main cabin door is down (open) and locked.
(g) Ensure the following Circuit Breaker (CB) is depressed:

B. Procedure
(1) On Aircraft 5001 thru Aircraft 5182, comply with the following:
NOTE: Aircraft 5183 and subsequent, proceed to Step 1.B.(2).

(a) Pull the following Circuit Breaker (CB):

(b) In tail compartment, remove CVR from rack.


(c) Depress the following Circuit Breaker (CB):

(d) On Display Unit (DU), verify Cockpit Voice Recorder Fail (blue) message is displayed
on CAS.
(e) Pull the following Circuit Breaker (CB):

(f) In tail compartment, install CVR in rack.


(g) Depress the following Circuit Breaker (CB):

(h) On DU, verify Cockpit Voice Recorder Fail (blue) message is no longer displayed on
CAS.
(i) At pilot COMM JACKS panel, comply with the following:
1 Plug hand microphone into HAND MIC jack.
2 At CVR control panel, verify the following systems are audible through
headphones:
• Boom microphone
• Hand microphone
• Cockpit interphone
• Received COMM audio
• Received NAV audio
(j) Repeat Step 1.B.(1)(i) using copilot and observer COMM JACKS panels.
(k) Using galley handset (if installed), verify the following are audible through headphones
at CVR control panel:
• Audio to crew stations
• Cabin page
(l) At pilot station oxygen mask, comply with the following:

1 Ensure microphone connector is plugged into jack located inside storage box.
2 On headphones, verify a distinct tone is heard.
(m) On pilot Audio Control Panel (ACP), comply with the following:
1 Select MIC switch to MASK position.
2 Press H MIC push-button and verify the following:
• H MIC push-button LED indicator light comes on
• Pilot station transmits only and is received by copilot and observer stations
• Pilot headphones boom microphone is disabled
3 Press H MIC push-button and verify the following:
• H MIC push-button LED indicator light goes off
• Pilot station does not transmit
(n) On pilot control yoke, press and hold ICS / RADIO switch in ICS position and verify pilot
mask MIC becomes active.
(o) On ACP, press MIC push-button to BOOM (depressed) and verify MIC push-button
indicator LED light goes off.
(p) Repeat Step 1.B.(1)(l) thru Step 1.B.(1)(n) at copilot and observer stations.
(q) At each ACP, select CVR push-button for 5 - 10 seconds and verify LED light comes on.
(r) Set audio level to a comfortable level.
(s) At REER in system monitor and test panel, comply with the following:
1 Press and hold VOICE RECORDER-PRESS TO ERASE switch for a minimum of
2 seconds.
2 Verify a 400 Hz tone at headphones jack for a 5 -10 second period.
(t) Proceed to Step 1.C.(2).
(2) On Aircraft 5183 and subsequent, comply with the following:
(a) On pilot Display Controller (DC), comply with the following:
1 Select SENSOR push-button ON.
2 On pilot DC, press FWC line select key so that FWC 1 is boxed.
(b) Pull the following Circuit Breaker (CB):

(c) On DU, verify Cockpit Voice Recorder Fail (blue) message is displayed on CAS.
NOTE: Due to Recorder Independent Power Supply (RIPS), fail message may not
appear for up to 10 minutes.
To power the CVR for 10 ±1 minutes, the RIPS must be fully charged. If the
CRV fails to meet the 10 ±1 minutes test, allow it to charge on aircraft power
for a minimum of 15 minutes before retesting.
(d) On pilot DC, press FWC line select key so that FWC 2 is boxed.

(e) On DU, verify Cockpit Voice Recorder Fail (blue) message remains displayed on CAS.
(f) Depress the following Circuit Breaker (CB):

(g) On DU, verify Cockpit Voice Recorder Fail (blue) message is not displayed on CAS.
(h) On all ACPs (pilot / copilot / observer), adjust audio level as follows:
1 At COM JACKS control panel, connect headphones to HEADPHONE jack.
2 On ACP, comply with the following:
a Ensure only HDPH push-button is selected (LED on green).
b Select CVR push-button on (depressed), after 5 - 10 seconds verifying
LED light comes on (green).
c Select CVR push-button off (extended) verify LED light goes off.
d Using SET knob, adjust audio to a comfortable level.
(i) On ACP, select CVR push-button.
1 On Aircraft 5183 thru Aircraft 5277, on COP press and hold CVR TEST switch for
at least 5 seconds verifying the following:
• CVR TEST switch TEST indicator light comes on
• On headphones, verify a distinct tone is heard
• On DU, Cockpit Voice Failed (blue) is not displayed on CAS
2 On Aircraft 5278 and subsequent, on COP press CVR TEST switch for at least 2
seconds then release verifying the following:
• CVR TEST switch TEST indicator light comes on
• On headphones, verify a distinct tone is heard
• On DU Cockpit Voice Failed (blue) is not displayed on CAS
(j) At cockpit area microphone, speak in a normal voice verifying after a slight delay that
voice audio is present in headphones with no significant distortion.
(k) On ACP, select CVR push-button off and ensure HDPH and ICS buttons are selected
(LED on green).
(l) At all COMM JACKS panel (pilot / copilot / observer), comply with the following:
1 Plug hand microphone into HAND MIC jack.
2 Key microphone and tap on mouth screen verifying after a slight delay, tapping
sound is repeated in headphones with no significant distortion.
(m) At pilot station oxygen mask, comply with the following:
1 Ensure microphone connector is plugged into jack located inside storage box.
2 Don oxygen mask.
(n) On pilot ACP, comply with the following:
1 Select MIC switch to MASK position.

2 Press H MIC push-button on and verify the following:


• Pilot station transmits only and is received by copilot and observer stations
• Pilot headphones boom microphone is disabled
3 Press H MIC push-button off and verify the following:
• Pilot station does not transmit
(o) On pilot control yoke, press and hold ICS / RADIO switch in ICS position verifying pilot
mask MIC becomes active.
(p) Repeat Step 1.B.(2)(l) thru Step 1.B.(2)(o) at copilot and observer stations.
(q) On pilot ACP, select CVR push-button on.
(r) Press and hold BULK ERASE switch at REER system monitor and test panel for at
least 2 seconds and release verifying a distinct 3 second tone is audible on any
headphone.
NOTE: Aircraft 5278 and subsequent, has no ERASE tone.
(s) On pilot ACP, select CVR push-button off.
C. Follow On
(1) Inspect for presence of foreign objects.
(2) On COP in DISPLAY SYSTEM CONTROL section, select switches as follows:
• DU 1 switch OFF
• DU 2 switch OFF
• DU 3 switch OFF
• DU 4 switch OFF
(3) Remove WOW wedge if used in Step 1.A.(2)(e).
(4) Remove as required, all landing gear and landing gear door safety devices installed in Step
1.A.(2)(d).
(5) Remove electrical power from aircraft. See External Electrical Power Application, 20-20-10,
Maintenance Practices.
(6) Record all maintenance actions in accordance with current governing authority.
