Lecture - Graph of Polynomial Function

The document discusses key concepts for graphing polynomial functions: - X-intercepts are where the graph crosses the x-axis (when y=0). Y-intercepts are where it crosses the y-axis (when x=0). - The leading coefficient and degree determine if the graph rises or falls to the left and right of y-axis. Odd degree functions cross the x-axis, even degree functions are tangent. - Examples are provided to find intercepts and sketch graphs of polynomial functions.

Intercepts of the Graph of Polynomial Function

x-intercepts of a graph
These are the x – values when y = 0 and the point(s) where the graph intersects the x-axis.
y-intercept of a graph
This is the value of y when x = 0 and the point where the graph intersects the y – axis.

Examples:
Find the intercepts of the following.
1. y=x 3−4 x 2 + x+ 6 2. y=x 4 + 6 x3 −x2 −6 x

Graph of Polynomial Functions

Examples:
Sketch the graph of the following polynomial functions.
1. y=2 x 3−7 x 2−7 x +12 2. y=−x5 +3 x 4 + x 3−7 x 2 +4
3. y=x 4 −7 x 2+ 6 x 4. y=−x 4 +2 x 3 +13 x 2−14 x−24

The Leading Coefficient Test

Leading Behavior of the Graph:
Coefficients: Degree: (Rising or Falling) Possible Sketch
(positive or (Even or Odd) Left-hand Right-hand
negative)

positive odd falling rising

negative odd rising falling

positive even rising rising

negative even falling falling

Characteristic of Multiplicity: Behavior of Graph Relative to x-axis

(Odd or even) at this Root:
(Crosses or is Tangent to)
even tangent to x – axis
odd crosses the x - axis

Important: The graph of a polynomial function is continuous, smooth, and has rounded turns.
