SPECIFICATION FOR
REELS AND DRUMS FOR BARE CONDUCTORS

( First Revision )

SUPPLIED BY BOOK SUPPLY BUREAU TO ACME TELE POWER LIMITED

IMT, MANESAR FOR INTERNAL USE AT THIS LOCATION ONLY
0. FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard ( First Revision ) was adopted by the Indian
Standards Institution on 24 October 1980, after the draft finalized by the
Conductors and Accessories for Overhead Lines Sectional Committee had
been approved by the Electrotechnical Division Council.
0.2 Indian Standard ‘Specification for reels and drums for bare wire’
( IS : 1778 ) was originally published in 1961 while IS : 2889 ‘Specification
for drums for trolley and contact wire ’ was published in 1964. As the
requirements for drums for conductors and trolley and contact wires are
essentially the same, it Hias decided while preparing this standard, to cover
the drums for these two applications by a single standard. This standard,
therefore, supersedes IS : 28891964.
0.3 In this revised standard the important dimensions for various compo-
nents of drums, which were not covered in the earlier standard, have also
been specified.
0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this
standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing
the result of a test, shall be rounded off in acordance with IS : 2-1960*.
The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should
be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard specifics the requirements for wooden drums for
overhead line conductors.
1.2 This standard also covers the requirements far drums for trolley and
contact wires.
2. NOMENCJATURE
2.1 For the purpose of this standard, the names of the various component
parts of drums as shown in Fig. 1 and 2 shall apply.
*Ruler for rounding off numerical values.

3. MATERIAL AND CONSTRUCTION

3.0 The drums shall be so constructed and made from such materials that
they satisfy the conditions specified in this standard. The flanges and
barrel shall be free from protruding material capable of damaging the
conductor or the hands of the operator during rotation of the drum. The
general constructional features of the drums shall be as shown in Fig. 1
and 2 and in Table 1.
3.1 Wooden Components - All wooden components shall be manufac-
tured throughout of seasoned wood, preferably softwood. The wood used

IMT, MANESAR FOR INTERNAL USE AT THIS LOCATION ONLY
in the construction shall be sound and free from defects that materially
weaken the component parts of the drums. Wood preservative shall be
used at the points where the barrel and flange components meet.
If required by the purchaser, the preservative treatment shall be applied
to the entire drum.
NOTE - If agreed between the purchaser and the supplier, the wooden com-
ponents may be manufactured out of ascu-treated wood. Guidance regarding types
of preservatives, their brief description, methods of treatment and the type and
choice of treatment, may be obtained from IS : 401-1967’.
3.2 Flanges - All flanges shall be of 2-ply construction irrespective of flange
thickness. Each ply shall be nailed and clenched together at approximately 90 ‘.
Nails shall be driven from the inside face of the flange, punched and then
clenched on the outer face. Flange boards shall not be less than the nominal
thickness by more than 2 mm. There shall not be less than 2 nails per board in
each circle. The number of circles of nails shall be in accordance with Table 2.
‘NOTE-To sccommodste different lengths of the conductor, flange diameter of the drum may hs
chsnged ss per the mutual agreement between the supplier and the ptimhaser provided all other
kquirements of the standard are fulfilled’

3.2.1 Where a slot is cut in the flange to receive the inner end
of the conductor, the entrance shall be in line with the periphery theof
barrel.
3.22 The flanges of the drum shall be large enough to prevent any possible
contact between the conductors and the ground during handling or transport. The
projection of the flanges beyond the outer most layer of the conductors shall be at
least SOmm for all drums.
3.3 Spindle Hole - The spindle hole shall be cut through the centre of
the middle flange board and either spindle plates or cast iron bushings
shall be fitted by bolts and nuts as required by the purchaser.
3.4 Barrel-End Supports - The supports shall be securely fixed to the
flanges by nailing and shall be segmentai type or disc type as may be
agreed upon between the purchaser and the manufacturers,

*Code of practice for preservation of timber ( second revision ).

6
IS : 1778- 1980

3.4.1 Barrel-Middle Suf$ort - In case of drums having 3-ply construction,

disc type middle barrel supports of 2-ply construction with a 100 mm
diameter hole concentric with the lOO-mm diameter holes in the flanges,
shall be provided at the ccntre of the barrel end supports as shown in
Fig. 2.
3.5 Barrel - Each batten shall be of segmental type and shall be nailed
to the barrel end supports with one nail at each side for 50 mm wide
boards and at least two nails for all wider boards. The battens shall be
closely butted aud provided with a smooth and round external surface to
the barrel. The edges of the battens shall be chamfered.

3.6 Stretchers - Stretchers may be used in the construction of drums
and the middle end supports when provided shall be slotted to receive
them. Alternatively, the spindle plate ( bush ) bolts shall extend through
the traverse length of the drum.
3.7 Iron Work - Normally, nuts on the barrel bolts or studs shall stand
proud of the flange but, if especially required on the smaller drums, the
nuts may be countersunk. All iron work shall be in accordance Gth the
dimensions given in Table 2 and shall be given a covering of protective
paints.
3.7.1 The ends of bolts or studs shall be flush with the top of the nuts
or rivetted over the nut.
