Multiplying Polynomials

The document provides a teaching guide for a 4th quarter mathematics lesson on multiplying polynomials for 7th grade students. The lesson will cover multiplying monomial factors by polynomials using the distributive property and laws of exponents. Students will participate in group activities using flash cards and round robin exercises to practice multiplying monomials and a monomial factor with a polynomial. At the end of the lesson, students will complete an individual seatwork assignment and summarize what they learned about multiplying polynomials.

LESSON: Multiplication of Polynomials: Multiplying Monomial Factors

I. TIME FRAME: 1 Hour

II. OVERVIEW OF THE LESSON:

 In this lesson, the learners will be able to multiply monomial factors by
polynomials using distributive property and the Laws of Exponent.

III. LEARNING COMPETENCIES:

The learners should be able to:

a. recognize the distributive property of multiplication over addition or subtraction;
b. multiply integers and variables with the concept of the Laws of Exponent; and
c. simplify algebraic expressions in descending order of the degree of the polynomial.
IV. LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of the lesson, the learner is able to:

Understanding: associate the distributive property of multiplication in multiplying
monomial factors;
Evaluating: evaluate the product of polynomials using the Laws of Exponents; and
Valuing: appreciate real - world situations of multiplying polynomials,
V. LESSON OUTLINE:

A. PRESENTATION (EXPLORE)

 MOTIVATION
 Before the main activity begins, the class will be divided into groups with four
members through “The Boat is Sinking” Game. Polynomials with specific number
of terms will be presented on the screen. The students must identify the number
of terms of the given polynomial to form a group of the intended number of
members.

With the inspired activity “Trinomial Pics & 1 Word”, some groups will be called to
describe the three pictures and lead to the answer “Humans are multiplying”. The
description will be connected biblically in Genesis 1:28 (Be fruitful and multiply
and fill the earth and subdue it.)

Guide Questions:
1. What will happen if humans will stop multiplying?
2. Is multiplication important?
3. Can you tell other uses and examples of multiplication?
B. ACTUAL ENGAGING ACTIVITIES (FIRM – UP)

 INSTRUCTION/DELIVERY
 How will you know if you are multiplying polynomials?
- Parentheses will serve as the operation symbol for multiplication of
polynomials.
Multiplying Two Monomials
(Examples of multiplying two monomials with solutions are presented for
inductive learning)

a. (5x2)(3x) = 15x3 b. (-2x2y)(-13) = 26x2y

c. (-6x3y2)(9xy4) = -54x4y6 d. (8x4y)(-7xmyn) = -56x4+my1+n

Flash Card Activity

 Each group will be given time to discuss and find the product of the
monomials based on the examples presented. Group members will have
the chance to represent, stand and answer the Drill Exercises when the
sound of the bell rings. The first group representative to stand up with the
correct answer will be given a corresponding point.
 Afterwards, a volunteer will respond to the leading question “How to
multiply Two Monomials?”

The General rule of multiplying two monomials will be presented: “Multiply the
numerical coefficients and the literal coefficients using the Laws of Exponents”.

Multiplying a Monomial Factor with a Polynomial

(Examples of multiplying a Monomial Factor with a Polynomial are presented for
inductive learning)

a. 8(3x – 4y + 2z) = 24x – 32y + 16z

b. -2x3(6x3 – 7x2 + 4x – 9) = -12x6 + 14x5 -8x4 + 18x3

c. (6x2 + 5xy – 8y2)4x3y2 = 24x5y2 + 20x4y3 – 32x3y4

Round Robin Activity

 Each group will hold one original problem. The goal is to solve four
problems involving multiplying a monomial factor with a Polynomial. If
each group is done solving their original problem, then they have to give
the problem to the adjacent group at the right until they will also get the
four problems from the other groups and solve it.
 A volunteer will respond to the leading question “How to multiply a
monomial Factor with a Polynomial?”

The General rule of multiplying a Monomial Factor with a Polynomial will be

presented: “To multiply a monomial by a polynomial, use the distributive property.
Its application results in monomials being multiplied by another monomial”.
C. UNWRAPPING (DEEPEN)

 PRACTICE
Individual Seatwork with Group Discussion

The Leader of the group will assign one number to each member to answer three
problems.
1. (12a)(-3a2); -4(x – y); 9d3(1 – 7d)
2. (-11b)(2b); (p + q)10; 6(x – x2)
3. (-c)(-c5); 2(-2 + e); -f2(f – 1)
4. (7d4)(-d2); (-r + t)7; e4(-2 + e)

 ENRICHMENT/VALUES INTEGRATION

o How were the activities?

o Did you learn something about our topic today? Kindly share it to the class.

Guide Questions:
 Let us focus again on the word “Multiplication”. We already know that
multiplication has a lot of good effects. However, is it an assurance that
Multiplication is always good for us? Why not?

An example of it is the most trending health issue of the world today, the nCOV,
Novel Corona Virus.

Why? The virus multiplies, spread, and infect people. Now, the question is, what
shall you do to prevent it?

 Can anyone summarize the entire topic for today? Kindly share it to the class.

D. LEARNING ASSESSMENT (TRANSFER)

 ASSIGNMENT
On a 1 whole sheet of paper,

o Answer Mental Math A, nos. 1-10.

o What are two methods of Multiplying Two Binomials?
