PLO-1: Engineering Knowledge: An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and an
engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
PLO-2: Problem Analysis: An ability to identify, formulate, research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching
substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering sciences.
CLO-1: Explain the basic concepts of Measurement & Instrumentation, fundamentals of Measurement systems and Uncertainty and
working of different transducers used to measure temperature, pressure, flow rate, velocity, position, torque and forces applied
CLO-2: To identify and select a suitable transducer for measuring temperature, pressure, flow rate, velocity, position, torque and
forces applied for a given problem statement.
Problem Statement
In nuclear power plant systems, cadmium rods are used to absorb the neutrons and hence control the fission reaction in
nuclear reactors. The length of cadmium rods determines how many neutrons will be absorbed i.e., if the cadmium rods
are 0% inside, then no neutrons will be absorbed and if the cadmium rods are 100% dipped inside then the fission reaction
would stop making the reactor shut down. Considering the high radioactivity and tight spacing suggest a good type of
device which could measure the depth of the cadmium rods with its key advantages and limitations in support of your
selection.
