COURSE OBJECTIVE:

This deals with the techniques of designing high current/voltage electronics circuits using
semiconductor devices in the switching mode, rather than in the linear mode. The subject starts
with courage of modern power semiconductor devices, their characteristic both static and
switching and their driver circuit analysis/design. Classification of power electronics circuits for
application in control rectification (AC to DC conversion, DC to AC conversion, DC to DC
conversion, AC to AC conversion) and controlling of DC drives.

COURSE OUTLINE:

Introduction to power electronics: History of power electronics, Applications, Power electronic

devices, Triggering devices, Manufacturers datasheet, Device protection. Thyristor : Principles
and Characteristics: Principle of operation of SCR, Static anode-cathode characteristics, Two
transistor analogy, Turn-on methods of thyristor, Dynamic turn-on switching characteristics, Turn-
off methods. Thyristor commutation: Natural commutation, Forced commutation, Commutation
circuit design. Controlled Rectifiers: Phase controlled converter operation, Semi-converter, Full
converter, Dual converter. Power semiconductor devices: Introduction, Asymmetrical thyristor,
Phase controlled thyristor, DIAC, TRIAC, SUS, SBS, SCS, IGBT, Comparison of power devices.
DC Choppers: Introduction, Step-down and step-up chopper operation, Switching mode
regulators, Thyristor chopper circuits. AC Voltage Controllers: Introduction, ON/OFF Control,
Phase Angle Control, Full Wave AC voltage controllers. Cyclo-converters: Single phase cyclo-
converter circuits, Three phase cyclo-converter circuits. Inverters: Principles of operation, Single
phase inverters, Polyphase inverters, Voltage control of inverters, Harmonic reductions. DC motor
drive and applications.
