WHAT IS Wi-SUN?
“Wireless - Smart Ubiquitous [ formerly Utility ] Network”
is an open standards-based robust, secure, and
interoperable IoT communications for large-scale utility,
industrial, and home networks.

▪ Renesas is a founding member of the Wi-SUN Alliance

▪ Wi-SUN Alliance specifies wireless communications networks
based on IEEE 802.15.4g RF (and derivatives) and IPv6/6LowPAN
for Field Area Networks (FAN) and Home Area Networks (HAN)
▪ Defines testing and certification program for multi-vendor
interoperability
▪ Over 180 members in North America, Europe, India, Japan,
Singapore -- including product vendors, semiconductor …
manufacturers, software companies, utilities, government
institutions, and universities.

Wi-SUN FAN
OVERVIEW

▪ Wi-SUN FAN (Field Area Network) is a wireless communications specification for:

▪ Large networks of smart edge/node devices (smart meters, IEDs, RTUs, other complex
sensor-based devices…)
▪ Unlicensed 863~928MHz ISM RF spectrum
▪ Supporting frequency-hopping, mesh networking, security, and full IPv6 routing (Layer 3)

DISTANCE TEST 1/2
P2P field test result on a long straight line of good prospect in Japan.

Reached 1.6km at 100kbps (PER<1%)

We measured the communication distance on a long line of sight straight line. At this time, both the
transmitter and the receiver are fixed with a tripod at a height of 2m from the ground.
When 1,000 packets were transmitted, we measured the packet error rate.
Up to 1600m, PER<1% result was obtained.

DISTANCE TEST 2/2
P2P field test result under heavy traffic conditions in India

Reached 430m at 50kbps (PER<1%)

In India, we measured the communication distance across a road with heavy traffic.
As a result, we confirmed PER<1% up to 430m at 50kbps.
