I. ILLUSTRADO (2014) DR. JOSE RIZAL LIFE STORY

II. INTRODUCTION
The movie introduced us to the life of the Filipino people under the rule of Spanish friars.
From the execution of three Filipino priests in 1872 for alleged subversion to the harsh and
unequal treatment to the Filipino people. The life of the people in that time was not easy. They
were bound to obey every law, every rule and every word of the Spanish friars and the government
even if the leaders were already oppressing their right. The Spanish colonizers abused them in
different ways. Even the Catholic Church used their powers to get what they want. Spaniards
came here in the Philippines, ruled our country and used us as their slaves. We were so pitiful,
asking for freedom and thirsty for liberty, hungry for our own country. Spaniards were cruel as
they use money and power to control the people. They used religion to frighten majority of the
Filipinos to conform and manipulate them. Filipinos had been treated unfairly. Spain thought that
they can fool everyone. But in spite of the struggles of Filipino, still, they show their bravery.

III. BODY
In this movie I’ve witnessed the life and struggles of our Philippine national Hero Dr. Jose
Rizal, from his childhood to his execution at the hands of Spanish forces occupying the Philippines
in the late 19th century. The movie was played by Alden Richards where he shows how Rizal runs
his life.
Rizal is a genius, a writer, a doctor, an artist, a lover, a friend, a brother and a son. He was
born in the times of Spanish colonization. In his childhood Rizal was known as “Pepe” as his
nickname. At the early age, Rizal shows his knowledge and excellence in different fields like arts,
martial arts, fencing, linguistics, science, literature and many others. He was even aware of what
is happening in his country. He even wrote a Tagalog poem “Sa Aking Kabata”, where revolves
on the love of one’s language. As he grows old Rizal shows the dedication and discipline to study.
This was very inspiring.
Rizal shows how persistent he is with what he wanted. Like if he wanted to get something,
he worked hard for it, especially when he realized that he needed to do something for the country,
for his family, for himself and for his love. Rizal also went through the cycle of every human being
undergoes. He had a fair share of wrong decisions, failures and more down moments than
accomplishments.
It was shown in the movie how Rizal fight for the right as he wrote his novel, Noli me
tangere and El filibusterismo. This novels open the eyes of many Filipino people to see what’s
really happening in our country. This led to the founding of katipunan that aimed to revolt against
Spaniards. Our national hero would not be called a hero if not for the fact that he had immense
patriotism and unwavering love for his country in his blood. Dr. Jose Rizal shows his love for our
country by doing all the means he could diverse to free his oppressed countrymen.
The movie also shows that during the time of Rizal, Filipino people had started stirring
from their seemed to be forever slumbering, although the Spaniards oppression continued to
darken the skies. During those times, as portrayed in the movie, there were social unrest that
results to revolts. As what Rizal did, a lot of native eyes had started to see the real faces inside
the holy veil worn by the Spaniards that led them to the realization of their own scraped image.
Rizal helps the Filipino people to finally perceive the truth tried to raise their voices but mostly
failed to do so because there was no solid foundation. Jose Rizal became their source of
strength though he did not purposely want to ignite insurgency. Though his writings were double
edge sword, he wanted to address his appeal for freedom and equality in a diplomatic manner.

IV. CONCLUSION
This movie helps us appreciate and remember the heroism of our heroes. The freedom
we experience today, we owe it all to our heroes who fought for our motherland, either by
weapons or by pen. This taught me to recognize the bravery of the people who gave their last
breath with Philippine independence in their mind. I learned so much about the past and its
importance to our situation today.

The movie teaches us more knowledge in life and helps us to understand the history of
our country. I felt mixed emotions given the fact that it was made to help us, Filipinos, to
understand what our national hero had done for the country. It shows how Rizal really love his
motherland for him to sacrifice his own life. It shows the great explanation of the Philippine
history, the nationalism and heroism in a non-violent manner, though, there were times that the
characters speak in Spanish language and I couldn’t understand it unless I will read the
subtitles. I could also say that the other characters weren’t having any difficulties in reciting their
Spanish lines. The values and great performance as the lead actor is perfect and has a great
impact on me as the audience of the said movie.
Every cast portrayed their role perfectly as they give so much dedication to it. They
made me feel the same way as when the Spaniard underestimates the Filipino people. They
made it easy for me to understand the flow of the story. Some scenes are brutal, and some are
not suitable for young kids such as the bed scene wherein the Spanish priest with the used of
their power tried to rape a Filipino woman. All in all, the movie is great. It was epic, melodrama
and historian. There are funny, tearful, grieves and hatred scenes that would surely make you
appreciate it. I love the last scene when Rizal fell in the ground facing above the sky and he
died looking at it. His death ignited the nationalism of every Filipinos and they started the
revolution against the Spaniards after his death because they made us suffer. After watching
the film, I couldn’t help but feel the sense of pride being him as the Philippine National Hero. He
is a legacy of what a real Filipino is. Rizal inspires the Filipinos to fight for the right.

The life of Dr. Jose Rizal is truly a model for youth to follow. He is a model that if we
follow, we would be capable of changing the current status of our country. This thought me that
even if we are rich or poor as long as we have our faith, everything that is right will always win
the fight. To not lose hope, but to have faith and dedication everything will go right. The movie
shows that if we worked hard for what we want, we can achieve in the end. Also, I learned that
we should see Filipino faces from the past in us to fix how we abused our freedom.
