BSECE – II

Identify at least three (3) parallel events in Noli Me Tangere that are still relevant to the
situation of the Philippines at present.
 The poor are still suffering from institutional and structural social injustice. Quality
education is still not accessible to the poor, the marginalized farmers, small fisher folks,
the tenants, the casuals and the migrant workers who suffer in dirty, difficult, dangerous,
degrading and deceptive jobs abroad.
 The Filipinos who have struggled long and hard for their redemption continue to suffer
because all the previous national leaders are men and women who favor the rich and keep
the poor marginalized.
  President Cory was the president for the Church and the socialites who was rumored to
play mahjong while the rightist rebels led by Honasan and the rest were hatching
rebellion against her.
Write at least three (3) virtues and values you learned from the novel.(explain)
 Noli Me Tangere,” the first novel written by the Philippine’s national hero Jose Rizal,
mirrors its creator’s persistence in attaining freedom from the Spaniards. True enough, as
Rizal aimed to redeem the country and its people by exposing the barbarity, greed,
cruelty and ignorance of the Spanish colonizers, his work reflected the struggles of the
Tagalogs — being the first to project such a bold account of living in the 1800s in the
Philippines. Likewise, as “Noli Me Tangere” portrays the different aspects of gaining
independence, Jose Rizal focuses on social climbers, abusive power, family devotion, self
sacrifice, and purity and faithfulness.
 Just as Jose Rizal sacrificed himself for his country, “Noli Me Tangere” also conveys this
message all throughout its text. Starting off with Sisa’s never-ending sacrifices for her
children, she withstands her husband’s beatings and even takes on the journey of finding
her sons, thereby showing her real love as a mother
 Representing the various classes of society during the late 1800s in the Philippines, Jose
Rizal includes personalities such as Doña Victorina and Capitan Tiago. These characters,
indeed, show how people tend to associate with higher classes of society, specifically the
Spaniards and the illustrados (“learned” ones) and mestizos. Capitan Tiago, in this
instance, portrays this character as he gives friars lumps of money as ecclesiastical
donations and even invites the parish curate at his home every dinner. Aside from that, he
also supports the government’s tax increases, leading to his title of gobernadorcillo, the
highest post a non-Spaniard can attain.
How is the lack of freedom portrayed in the novel?

Through the writings made by Dr. Jose Rizal, he was able to increase the awareness of the
Filipinos regarding their freedom during the Spanish Era.

 Filipino women have no freedom to study at Universities. They are also not allowed to
engage in professional work and work freely with men, though they are permitted to run
their business.
 Nipa houses were being demolished in the city of Manila.
 Prioritizing the trades from different countries.
 Usage of Spanish Flag in all vessels.
 Filipinos were called Indios, a perfect example of discrimination.
 Only the family who belongs to the Ilustrados were allowed to be educated.
 The government was ruled by the Spanish.

How is the situation in the novel different from the present times?
 For the young generation, doing this fruitful activity is some sort of a compulsion rather
than a productive urge of their freewill or volition to do so. Like for instance, a Filipino
high school student was required to write about the novel’s summary in order to pass a
specific subject, without taking into consideration the beauty importance of the task that
he or she was assigned to do. This is a truly bitter reality of how modern our world, now
is. However, let this article revitalize your dormant cognitive faculties by reliving the past
and objectively correlating it with the present and the future in terms of the kinds of
governance, economic and political structures and most importantly, the bureaucratic
framework and system of government. With this write up, the Filipino youths are
somehow expected to learn from their ancient and colorful history as to what, how and
why they had existed and destined to make major differences
