Salesforce acquires Slack: Microsoft has a new competitor

• Enterprise software company Salesforce Inc has announced that it will acquire workplace chat tool
Slack for $27.7 billion, adding the popular collaboration app to its portfolio. This is the largest
acquisition in the company’s 21-year history.

• Slack is a workplace collaboration software primarily used by companies as an alternative to email,

though some non-workplace groups have adopted it for communication as well. Instead of a full email
inbox, users get chat messages instantly on the Slack app on their desktops or mobile phones.

• As part of the deal, Salesforce will integrate Slack with its Customer Relationship Management (CRM)
solution, Salesforce Customer 360. This will provide the communications platform with the
opportunity to expand its presence in the enterprise segment.

• For Slack, the deal comes as it struggles to fully capitalize on the switch to remote working during the
COVID-19 pandemic.

• The deal is almost twice as large as Salesforce’s largest acquisition so far and would turn the combined
company into a more formidable competitor to Microsoft and Google. This acquisition is larger in
valuation when compared to Microsoft’s acquisition of LinkedIn for $26 Billion in 2016.

• The company will now look forward to compete with the Microsoft Teams application, which is often
bundled with the Office software packages and thereby attracting companies looking to save costs
during the disruption caused by the outbreak.

• In July, Slack filed a complaint in the European Union accusing Microsoft of illegally bundling Teams
into Office 365 in a way that blocks its removal by customers who may prefer Slack.

• As per the terms of agreement, Slack’s shareholders will receive $26.79 billion in cash and 0.0776
shares of Salesforce common stock for each Slack share, or $45.5 per share based on Salesforce’s
closing price on 30th November. The acquisition is expected to be completed by mid-2021.

• Salesforce has been looking to diversify into other fields largely through a series of acquisitions that
included its previous deal, a $15.7 billion purchase of data analytics specialist software Tableau.
