read this chapter carefully before installing the Quidway R4001 router.

2.1 Safety Recommendation

Do not place the router in wet place, keep the router away from any liquid.
Keep the router away from any heat source.
Do not plug or unplug cables with power on.
Pay attention to power use safety.
Use UPS (uninterrupted power supply).
Wear antistatic wrist strap during installation.

2.2 Installation Conditions

Quidway R4001 router should be used indoors where the conditions meet the following
requirements:
Temperature: 0 ~ 40
Humidity: 10 ~ 90% non-condensing
The Quidway R4001 comes with a built-in radiator fan which draws cold air from the
radiating holes and discharges the hot air through the bottom of the housing, as
illustrated in Figure 2-1.

Figure 2-1 Radiating of Quidway R4001 router

Around the radiating holes, a space of at least 10mm should be reserved to ensure
sufficient radiating. Though the router provides a cross-ventilation slot, you'd better
mount the router aerial to ensure good cross-ventilation. It is recommended that the
router be mounted on a 19" standard cabinet. Otherwise place the router horizontally
on a clean surface. Air conditioners are recommended where it is hot in summer.

2.4 Preparation for Cable Connection

2.4.1 Preparation for cE1/PRI Interface Connection

Before connecting the cE1/PRI, make sure of the features of the E1 line.
There are two cable impedance optional for the cE1/PRI interface: 75 and 120 ohm.
The cable supplied is 75ohm BNC connector, which can be connected to the 120ohm
interface through the delivered 75/120ohm adapter.

2.4.2 Preparation for Sync/Async Serial Interface Connection

Before connecting synchronous/asynchronous serial port, confirm:

the type of device for connecting the sync/async serial port, i.e. synchronous
/asynchronous, DTE/DCE.
the signal standard, baud rate and synchronous clock required by the connected
equipment.

I. DTE and DCE

Sync/async serial port is usually connected to Modem or TA (terminal adapter) as a

dial-up interface. You only have to select the appropriate baud rate.
The synchronous serial port can work in both DTE and DCE modes. The equipment
directly connected should work in DTE and DCE modes respectively. The equipment at
DCE side provides the synchronous clock and communication rate, and that at DTE
side receives the synchronous clock and communicates at the specified baud rate.
The router is usually DTE side equipment. Consult the manual accompanying the
equipment to determine whether the type of equipment connected should be DTE or
DCE. Table 2-2 can also help you determine the type of equipment.

II. Rate and transmitting distance

In different modes, the sync/async serial port supports different electrical signal
standards and baud rates. So different cables should be selected according to the

4.1.2 Command Line Interface

The Quidway series routers provide the users with a command line interface that
consists of a series of configuration commands. With these commands, the user can
configure and manage the router. The command line interface has the following
features:
Local or remote configuration via console port.
Local or remote configuration via Telnet.
Multilevel configuration command protection. Only the privileged users can configure
and manage the router, unauthorized users can not access the router.
Users may input ‘?’ anytime to get on-line help.
Providing various prompts and help information.
Providing network testing commands such as tracert, ping for quick diagnoses of
network faults.
Providing rich and detailed debugging information to help diagnosing network faults.
Direct log-in and management on other routers with telnet commands.
Providing functions similar to DosKey to execute certain history commands.
The command line interpreter searches key words by incomplete matching. Users only
need to input non-conflicting key words, such as sh for show, and interpretation will be
done.
For the convenience of managing the router, all commands are divided into groups:
each corresponding to a command mode. Switchover between different configuration
modes can be realized through these commands. Usually, in a command mode, only
limited commands can be executed. But some common commands (such as ping,
show, running-config, interface) can be executed in all modes except ordinary user
mode.
Function features of each mode are shown in Table 4-1.

4.1.4 Configuration Procedures

Before configuring the routers, concrete details about networking are required,
including networking purpose, the role of the router in the network interconnection,
subnetwork classification, WAN type, transmission media selection, network safety
strategies and network reliability requirements.
Make a clear and complete networking diagram according to above points.
Configure the router's WAN interface. Firstly, according to the selected WAN
transmission media, configure the interface physical parameters (such as sync/async
of serial interface, baud rate and synchronous clock). For dial-up interfaces, DDR
parameters should be configured. Then, according to the selected WAN type,
configure the link layer protocol to be encapsulated by the interface link and relative
parameters.
According to the subnetwork classification, configure the IP address or IPX network
numbers for the interfaces of the router.
Configure the transferring route between the interfaces. Relative parameters should be
configured if dynamic routing protocols will be initiated.
Configure the security features of the router if there is special security requirements.
Configure the reliability features of the router if there is special reliability requirements.
For details about various router protocols or function configurations, refer to “Quidway

This section describes how to configure the frame relay on Quidway R4001 router, as
well as related test and debugging methods:
Configuration preparation
Frame relay protocol
Configure frame relay protocol

4.4.1 Configuration Preparation

Preparation:
The router has been correctly installed according to the hardware installation
instructions for the Quidway R4001 router.
Frame Relay works normally.
Basic knowledge:

4-25
Installation Manual Chapter 4
Quidway R4001 Router Configuration

Before configuration, read the descriptions on the user interface command line of the
router, understand the relationship between the command line modes.
In actual application, use actual data to replace the italicized parameters in the
example.
Basic knowledge of the related protocols involved in configuration is a must.

4.4.2 Frame Relay Protocol

Frame relay uses the packet switching technology to set up connections between user
devices (such as router and host) and network equipment (such as switching node
switch and Modem). The user side devices are called DTE, while the network side
devices are called DCE.
Frame relay services can be either provided by the public network service provider, or
set up within an enterprise.
Frame relay is a protocol with high performance and high efficiency. It has the following
features:
Set up multiple virtual connections on one physical connection to make more flexible
and efficient use of bandwidth.
The optical or digital connection lowers the transmission error code rate, eliminates the
time-consuming error detection, and improves data transmission efficiency of the
WAN.
No flow control process as the upper level protocol supports the flow control
mechanism better.
Provides congestion detecting mechanism, which will notify the upper level protocol in
case congestion takes place.

4.4.3 Configuration Procedures

This section describes how to use the frame relay protocol to set up interconnection
with the remote router:

4-39
Installation Manual Chapter 5
Quidway R4001 Router Debugging

Chapter 5 Debugging

5.1 Debugging Tools

The following debugging tools are contained in the command lines provided by the
Quidway series routers:
ping, tracert commands to test whether the network is connected.
show command to query interface and protocol status (Up/Down), as well as other
information.
debug command for technical support personnel and experienced maintenance
personnel to execute debugging commands, and monitor command to output
debugging information for fault diagnosis and locating.

5.2 Network Failure Diagnosis

As a router has various kinds of interfaces, uses many different kinds of protocols, and
has very complicated configurations, faults may easily occur during configuration and
application. Usually, routers at the two ends in the WAN are not at the same place, so
during configuration and application, WAN is the place where faults mostly occur. In
case fault occurs, check carefully by starting from locating the fault.

5.2.1 Diagnose LAN Interface Fault

Send IP (or IPX) Ping packet from the PC to the Ethernet interface of the router. If no
response returns, or there is serious packet loss in large traffic, then the fault must
have occurred at the Ethernet interface. Check the Ethernet according to the following
steps:

I. Check Ethernet connection

If the Ethernet is connected via HUB or LAN Switch, check the indicator on the HUB or
LAN Switch to make sure if the PC and the router’s Ethernet interface are correctly
connected.
Common faults due to incorrect hardware connection: no response when the ping
packet has been sent from the PC to the router, no change of input and output packet
counting at the interface.
If the hardware is correctly connected, then check the software.

II. Check IP

Check whether the Ethernet IP addresses of the PC and the router are correctly
configured. The network addresses of these two IP addresses must be identical, only
their host addresses may differ. If this requirement is met and there is no response, or

5-1
Installation Manual Chapter 5
Quidway R4001 Router Debugging

there is serious packet loss in large traffic, it can be determined that the router’s
Ethernet interface is not correctly configured.

III. Check IPX

Check whether the Ethernet IPX network numbers of the PC and the router are
correctly configured. These two network numbers must be the same. If this is correct, it
can be determined that the router’s Ethernet interface configuration is incorrect.

IV. Check protocol compatibility

At present, Ethernet supports two IP frame formats: Ethernet_II and Ethernet_SNAP.

The Quidway R4001 router can receive IP packets of these two formats at the same
time, but can only send IP packets of either Ethernet_II or Ethernet_SNAP designated
by the user. Make sure that the format of the IP packets sent from the router is the
same with that of all other terminals in the Ethernet.
The Ethernet supports four IPX frame formats: Ethernet_II, Ethernet_SNAP, IEEE
802.2, and IEEE 802.3. The Quidway R4001 router can only receive IPX packets of the
set frame format. And the frame format of the sent IPX packets must also be the same
as set by the user. The common failures due to protocol mismatching: no response
when the ping packet has been sent from the PC to the router, although the hardware
connection is correct.

V. Check Ethernet working mode

When twisted-pair is used to connect the Ethernet, there are two working modes
according to the 10BASE-T standard: full duplex and half duplex. When a shared HUB
is used, the half duplex mode shall be adopted; when the LAN Switch is used and full
duplex mode has been set on the LAN Switch, the full duplex mode can be used.
Common faults due to incorrect working mode are: serious packet loss in large traffic.
You can use the command show interface ethernet 0 to check the packet
receiving/sending error rate of the Ethernet.

5.2.2 Diagnose Sync/Async WAN Interface Fault

If the faults are not at the Ethernet interface, check the WAN interface:

I. Check physical connection

The Quidway R4001 router is equipped with cables of various interface such as V.24,
V.35, and DTE and DCE configurations. Please specify the cable you want when
purchasing the router.
Check if the router’s WAN interface works in sync/async mode. If it works in
asynchronous mode, check if the baud rate is set correctly. If it works in synchronous
DCE mode, and the clock is generated by the router, then check the clock rate and
clock mode. If it works in synchronous DTE mode, and the clock is generated by the
DSU/CSU equipment (There are 4 clock receiving modes: DTEclk1, DTEclk2,
DTEclk3, and DTEclk4), please refer to the relative manuals for DCE devices and set
the correct clock mode, with DTEclk1 as default value.

5-2
Installation Manual Chapter 5
Quidway R4001 Router Debugging

The common faults due to incorrect hardware parameters and connections: no

response from the opposite router when executing ping command, and no changes of
the input and output packet counting at the interface.

II. Check link layer protocol

The WAN interface of Quidway R4001 router supports various protocols such as
HDLC, SLIP, PPP, Frame Relay and X.25. The same protocol must be set for the
routers at both ends of the WAN.
If PPP (Point to Point Protocol) protocol is used with PAP or CHAP password
authentication, please check if the password settings at both sides are correct.
If Modem is used in asynchronous mode, please check if Modem commands are used
on the Quidway R4001 router.
If the above configuration is incorrect, communication with the link layer protocol will
not be achieved, even though the counting of input and output packets on the interface
increases.
If the link layer protocol is correct, while IP and IPX can not work, check the following:
If the link layer protocol is Frame-Relay, then check if the frame-relay mapping at
both ends are set correctly: frame-relay map {ip|ipx} network-address dlci, where
network-address is the IP (or IPX) address of the opposite serial port and the dlci
values at both ends shall be the same.
If the link layer protocol is PPP of asynchronous dial-up mode, check if the dialer
mapping at both ends is set correctly: dialer map {ip|ipx} network-address
dialer-string, where network-address is the IP (or IPX) address of the opposite serial
port, and dialer-string is the telephone number at the opposite end.
If the link layer protocol is X.25, check if the x25 mapping at both ends is set
correctly: x25 map { ip | ipx } network-address x121-address, where
network-address is the IP (or IPX) address of the opposite serial port, and
x121-address values at both ends shall be identical.
Like the requirements on the Ethernet interface, the network parts of the WAN
interface IP addresses for the routers at both ends of the WAN must be identical. If
the IP address is set incorrectly, then the route for IP packets might be abnormal. If
the IPX network numbers at both ends of the WAN are different, then
communication via IPX can not be realized.
Check whether the route has failed. The routing function is the essential function of
a router. The Quidway R4001 router supports both static routing and dynamic
routing such as RIP-1, RIP-2 and OSPF. Route failure refers to the packet transfer
failure due to incorrect route configuration or failure to configure the route. In this
case, all interfaces of the router are correctly connected, and communication with
the host or other routers directly connected can be realized. However, it can not
access the devices in other network segments. The solution is to add routes to the
router for those inaccessible network segments. Adding the default route or
activating the dynamic routing protocol is recommended.

5.2.3 Diagnose cE1/PRI Interface Fault

Check the cE1/PRI interface according to the following steps :

5-3
Installation Manual Chapter 5
Quidway R4001 Router Debugging

I. Check physical connection

The Quidway R4001 router has two types of E1 cables: 75-ohm non-balanced cable
and 120-ohm balanced cable. Please check the physical attributes of the line and
select the correct cable type.
Check the synchronous (RLOS) indicator. If it is on, it means the line is in abnormality.
Check the coding format of the line and determine whether authentication will be
needed, then configure the parameters correctly.
When two Quidway R4001 routers are connected directly, make sure that the
synchronous clock selected is DCE for one end, and LINE for the other end.
The common faults due to incorrect hardware parameters and connections: no UP
reported from the interface, no response from the opposite router when executing ping
command, no changes of the input and output packet counting at the interface (or
many faulty frames are produced although the counting changes).

II. Check link layer protocol

The cE1/PRI interface of Quidway R4001 router supports various protocols such as
PPP, Frame Relay and X.25. Only when the same protocol is set in the routers at both
ends of the WAN can communication be realized.
If PPP (Point to Point Protocol) protocol is used with PAP or CHAP password
authentication, please check if the passwords at both ends are correctly set.
If X.25 is used, please check if X.25 encapsulation is correctly configured. When two
routers are connected directly, one end shall be DTE, and the other shall be DCE;
when connected directly to a switching system, the router shall be configured as DTE;
when interconnected with a Cisco router, the Cisco router can not use the Cisco
encapsulation format of frame relay.
IF frame relay is used, please check if correct frame relay terminal type is configured.
When two routers are connected directly, one end shall be DTE, and the other shall be
DCE; when connected directly to a switching system, the router shall be configured as
DTE; when interconnected with a Cisco router, the Cisco router can not use the Cisco
encapsulation format of frame relay.
If the above configuration is not correct, the link layer protocols can not communicate,
even if the count of input and output packets on the interface increases.
If the link layer protocol is correct, while IP and IPX can not work, check the following:
If the link layer protocol is Frame-Relay, check the frame-relay mapping at both ends
is correctly set: frame-relay map {ip| ipx} network-address dlci, where
network-address is the IP (or IPX) address of the opposite serial port, and dlci
values at both ends shall be the same.
If the link layer protocol is PPP of asynchronous dial-up mode, check if the dialer
mapping at both ends is set correctly: dialer map { ip | ipx } network-address
dialer-string, where network-address is the IP (or IPX) address of the opposite serial
port, and dialer-string is the telephone number at the opposite end.
If the link layer protocol is X.25, check if the x25 map at both ends is set correctly:
x25 map { ip | ipx } network-address x121-address, where network-address is the

IP (or IPX) address of the opposite serial port, and x121-address values at both
ends shall be the same.
Like the requirements on the Ethernet interface, the network parts of the WAN
interfaces IP addresses of the routers at both ends of the WAN must be the same. If
the IP addresses are set incorrectly, then the route of IP packets might be abnormal.
If the IPX network numbers at both ends of the WAN are different, communication
via IPX can not be realized.
Check whether the route has failed. Routing function is the essential function of a
router. Quidway R4001 router supports both static routing and dynamic routing such
as RIP-1, RIP-2, and OSPF. Route failure refers to message transfer failure due to
incorrect route configuration or failure to configure the route. In that case, the
router's interfaces are correctly connected, and communication with the host or other
routers directly connected to the router can be done. However, the router can not
access the devices in other network segments. The solution is to add routes to the
router for those inaccessible network segments. Adding the default route or
activating the dynamic route protocol is recommended.
