“arthāpattir api dṛṣṭaḥ śruto vārthaḥ anyathā nopapadyate ity arthakalpanā-yathā jīvato
devadattasya gṛhābhāvadarśanena bahirbhāvasyādṛṣṭasya kalpanā” iti. Keyam
anyathānupapattir nāma? yadi tāvat-asyānena vinā sadbhāvo nopapadyate iti. tadevaṃ
kāryataḥ kāraṇānumānam upanyastam, na pramāṇāntaram. athedamucyate.
jñātasambandhasyetyanumānalakṣaṇam, ajñātaścātra sambandhaḥ; tasmāt
pramāṇāntaram -iti, tadayuktam; katham ajñātasambandhaḥ śakyate’vagantum-
ayamanena vinā nopapadyate-iti; na anyathānupapattiḥ pratyakṣasamadhigamyā.
kāryāvyabhicārasamadhigamyā hi sā; avyabhicāraścāsakṛddarśanapūrvakaḥ. tasmāt
dṛṣṭam adṛṣṭaṃ vā jñātasambandham evāvagamyate’nyathānupapattyā. ataḥ
pramāṇāntaraṃ mṛgatṛṣṇikaiveti. satyam; yadi yad yena vinā nopapadyate tad
evāvagamakaṃ syāt; iha tu yan nopapadyate, tad evāvagamyate. kiṃ cātra nopapadyate?
jīvato gṛhābhāvadarśanāt anyatrābhāvo nopapadyate. tataḥ kim? nātrābhāvasya gamyatā.
kasya tarhi? bhāvasya; na cāsau gṛhābhāvadarśanenopapadyate. bāḍhaṃ nopapadyate; na
hi gṛhābhāvadarśanena vinā bahirbhāva upapadyate.

nanu “dṛṣṭaḥ śruto vārthaḥ anyathā nopapadyate” iti gamakasyānyathānupapadyamānatāṃ


darśayati. agranthajño devānāṃ priyaḥ - “dṛṣṭaḥ śruto vārtho'rthakalpanā” iti kim idam
arthakalpaneti? dṛṣṭaḥ śruto vārtho’rthāntarasya pramāṇam ityarthaḥ. “anyathā
nopapadyate” iti kena sambadhyate? pramityeti vadāmaḥ; anyathānupapadyamānatām
āpādayan arthāntaraṃ gamayati. kim atra jñātasambandhitā naivāpekṣyate? apekṣyate hi
sambandhamātrajñānam, na tu sambandhitā; anumāne tu -“jātasambandhasya” iti ṣaṣṭhyā
sambandhitaivāvagamiketyuktam

“dṛṣṭaḥ śruto vā” iti darśanaśravaṇopanyāsaḥ kiṃ kāraṇāntaravyudāsāya? neti vadāmaḥ,


upalabdho’rthaḥ- ityarthaḥ. śrutagrahaṇam idānīṃ kimartham? “dṛṣṭaḥ” ityeva vaktavyam.
Ucyate-abhidhānāntaramevedam “dṛṣṭaḥ śruto vā” ityupalabdher vācakam.

bhojane, rātribhojanenaiva pīnatvamupapadyate, na rātrivākyenātor'thakalpanaiva

āgamārtho bhavati /

evaṃ vākyārthānupapattigamyo 'pyartha' kiṃ nāgame 'ntarbhavatītyāha--- vākyārtheti ||

prathamaparicodanāṃ tāvat pariharati---savikalpaketi /
savikalpako hi śrutārthāpattibodha' savikalpajñānāni ca śabdapura' sarāṇi /
ata' śabdaparyavasitāyāmarthāpattau śabdādeva sidhyannartho nārthāpatterviṣaya iti /
nanvevaṃ sarvapramāṇavikalpeṣu samānamidam, indriyaliṅgābhyāmapi śabdapura'
saramevāgni' pratīyate, tatastayorapi śabdaparyavasāyitaiva bhavet atastatra smṛtistha eva

śabdo 'pratyāyaka', tadihāpi samānam /


yathā hi karmendriyamarthenaiva sannikṛṣṭamiti tameva prakāśayati liṅgaṃ cārthena
sambaddhamiti ta gamayati, na śabdam, evamihāpyanupapadyamānor'thenaivopapadyate
na śabdena /
tathā ca dṛṣṭārthāpattayor'thaviṣayā eva /
atrocyate /
satyamarthadvārikeva vākyāntaramevākāṅkṣati, yathā padaṃ padāntaram /
na hi pacatītyukte odanapratyakṣeṇākāṅkṣā nivartate, kiṃ tarhi odanamiti padena, evaṃ
vākyamapyanupapadyamānatayāvagataṃ vākyāntaramevākāṅkṣati, na tu tamarthaṃ
svarūpeṇa /
ata eva nirvāpamantre 'tideśād vikṛtiṃ gate prākṛtadevatāyā abhāvāt tatpadanivṛttau tasya
sthāne sūryāyeti padamūhyate /
chedanamantre tviṣetvetyatra chinadmīti padamadhyāhriyate /
hṛdayasyāgne 'vadyati atha jihvāyā atha vakṣasa ityatrāpadyatipadānuṣaṅga' /
na cārtha evānuṣajyate 'anuṣaṅgo vākyasamāpti' sarveṣu pekṣyate śabdollekhenāpi
gṛhyamāṇa', kinnvartharūpeṇaiva, tamarthaṃ vikalpayani śabdantvastu nāma
sanmātratayā /
yadi tu tatrāpi śabdo 'pekṣyate tiraścāmarthavikalpo na syāt, sa ca nāsti dṛśyeta hi teṣāmapi
hitāhitaprāptiparihārārtha' prayatna' /
tṛṣitā hi gāvastaṭākāni gacchanti, varṣātapābhi

ato 'śabdajñānāmapyanumānādivikalpadarśanānna tatra śabdāpekṣāstīti niścīyate /
śrutārthāpattibodhastu tiraścāṃ nāstyeva, śabdavyutpattijo hyasau, na ca teṣāmasāvastīti
pratyakṣe 'pi varṇitam /
anyeṣāmapyavyutpannamaśabdānāṃ śrutārthāpattibodho na dṛśyate /
kiṃ punastiraścām /
atho 'nvayavyatirekābhyāmagamyate 'sti śabdāpekṣā śrutārthāpattau' /
anumānādiṣu tu saṃskārodabodhenāvarjanīyatayāstu nāma śabdasmṛti', na tu śabdāpekṣā /
ato 'tra vākyasyānupapannasya vākyāntaramevārthavadupapādakaṃ na tvarthamātraṃ
śabdamātraṃ vā /
ata evāgṛhītasambandhasyārthamaviduṣa' śrute 'pyupapādake vākye
nānupapannavākyārthajñāne 'nupapatti' śāmyati, pratipannārthasyāpyāśayakalpanā /
ato na śrutavākyasya nyūnatābuddhirnivalabdhaprayojana iti /
yāvaddhayakṛtārtha' śabdastāvad bodho 'vagamyate, sa tadartho bhavati /
prayojanavacano hyarthaśabda' /
ata eva vākyārtha āgamārtho bhavati /
tu kriyākārakasaṃsarge labdhaprayojanaṃ vākyamiti tata'
paramarthāntaramavagamyamānaṃ nāgamikaṃ bhavati /
na hi prayojanatvāvagatārthānupapattyā yadavagamyate nāsādyata iti yuktaṃ

vākyārthasya pūrvāvagatasyāgamārthātvam /
ka' punarviśeṣa', ucyate /
śrutāgamārthatve yadi pramādāt tannāśo bhavati tato yajurvedādivihitanāśanimittaṃ
prāyaścitam, itarathā tvavijñātanāśanimittamiti yadyavijñāto bhūrbhuva' sva' svāheti
mahāvyāhṛtī' samāhṛtya prāyaścitaṃ samupadiśati /
śrutārthāpattivedya eva hi vedo 'vijñāta ityucyate, sa hyṛgādīnāṃ nānyatamatvena
jñāyata iti ||78||
atra codayati---nanu ceti /
na tāvad divāvākyarātrivākyayo' sambandho 'sti, sannapi vā na vidita', na
cāviditasambandhānyadarśa

Atha sannidhiḥ kaḥ? yasyā'rthasya śravaṇāntaramākāṅkṣāyogyatābhyāmarthāntare buddhi


viparrivṛttiḥ. sā ca na śabdanibandhanaiva kevalam
anvitābhidhānavyutpattāvupalakṣaṇam, adhyāhṛtenā’pi loke anvitābhidhānadarśanāt. Na
ca vācyam-śabda evā’dhyāhṛiyate, sa cā’rthamupasthāpayati-iti, anupayogāt,
apramāṇakatvācca. Yadyapyarthāpattipramāṇako’dhyāhāraḥ, tathāpi
śabdakalpanamanupapannam. yena hi vinā’nupapattiḥ, tadevā’rthāpattiprameyam. na
cā’rthānām śabdamantareṇā’nupapattiḥ. syānmatam. Arthakalpanāyaivā’rthāpattiḥ
pravartamānā tasyā’rthasya savikalpakajñānavedyatvāt, savilkalpakajñānānāñca
śabdapurassaratvāt purovartini śabda eva paryavasyati-iti. tadasat. yathaiva
śabdapurassare’pi savikalpakajñāne liṅgasya, indriyāṇāñca nirvikalpakadaśāyāmartha
eva’avadhāritaśaktitvānna śabdamātre paryavasānam, tathā dṛṣṭārthāpattau
sākṣādupapādake’artha evā’rthāpatteḥ prāmāṇyābhyupagamāt, śrutārthapattāvapi tatraiva
tasyāḥ prāmāṇyam yuktam, na śabde. Tasya sākṣādanupapattiśamanasamarthatvāt.

Kiñca sarvatra savikalpakajñāne śabdassmaraṇaviparivartī na prameyatām


pratipattumarhati. savikalpakajñāneṣu pūrvapratīyamānatā ca śabdasya nā’tīva
pramāṇavatī, kintvarthapratītāveva samānakālam śabdasmaraṇamiti pratītyārūḍham. Tena
na śrutārthāpattiśśabdaviṣayā. na ca śabdānupapattyā śabdakalpanaivocitā, tasya
svato’nupapattyabhāvāt. anvitābhidhānupapattyā tu kalpanā prasarantī
yogyapratiyogyarthaviṣayaivā’vatiṣṭhate, tasyaiva’’kāṅkṣitattvāt, daśamādyanyāyena
padārthavat pūrvapratītasyā’pi śabdasyopekṣaṇīyattvāt.

na ca “dvārami”ti yatrā’dhyāhāraḥ, tatrā’pyāvṛiyatām, saṃvṛiyatāmiti vā


kalpayitumarthāpatteḥ prabhaviṣṇutā, sāmanyakalpanāmātrahetutvāt.
