nothing is permanent except change. People hate change yet only
change brought progress to the world. Being an instrument of change I

CULTURE AND SOCIETY AS ANTHROPOLOGICAL AND

SOCIOLOGICAL CONCEPTS

Culture is the learned set of practices, beliefs, values, rules for proper
conduct, and material objects that are shared by members of society. It is a
powerful force in the lives of all people.
Culture serves as a foundation of man’s continuing interaction with his
surroundings. People develop a culture of their own out of their learnings
and experiences from their environmental exposure (Banaag, 2012, p. 46).
Culture is related to the word “cultus” which means way of life.
Society refers to a group of people sharing a common culture within
a defined territorial boundaries. Every human society is organized in such a
way that there are rules of conduct, customs, traditions, folkways and
mores, and expectations that ensure appropriate behaviour among
members (Palispis, 2007 p. 254). This makes every society have unique
culture.

ASPECTS OF CULTURE
Since culture is very complex, there are sides of culture that
contribute to its development.

DYNAMIC, FLEXIBLE AND ADAPTIVE – This means that culture is

dynamic in the sense that it is always a continuous and never-ending reality.
It is flexible because culture has parameters or limit. It is adaptive
because it is mobile and can include all aspects of life such as customs,
lifestyle, way of thinking, arts and so on.

LEARNED THROUGH SOCIALIZATION OR ENCULTURATION –

Socialization, the process where people identify their identity through their
physical, psychological and economic needs, is one instance where culture
is learned.
Enculturation, on the other hand, is the process of adopting one’s self
into another culture.
The Catholic missionaries who wanted to influence the religious
beliefs of the Cordillerans, for example, had to learn the local dialect for
them to be able to teach their doctrines more effectively.
They also had to educate themselves of the other aspects of the local
peoples’ lives such as farming, and hunting practices, communal
celebrations and others.

PATTERNED SOCIAL INTERACTION – In culture, there are levels of

consistency of what people are doing such as patterns in the use of power
and authority.
Like in a family or in a community, who holds the power? Who makes
decisions?

TRANSMITTED THROUGH SOCIALIZATION AND ENCULTURATION

Culture is transmitted when social exchanges happen when people
encounter each other.
For instance, when one moves to another place, he gets to
encounter different experience that may later influence his own practices.

REQUIRES LANGUAGE AND OTHER FORMS OF COMMUNICATION –

Culture is transferred and shared to others through language in many forms
of expression such as signs, oral/ verbal and symbolic, written or unwritten.

INTEGRATED AND AT TIMES UNSTABLE – Culture is integrate and at

times unstable because of changes that happen to it overtime. For instance,
the invention of computerized technologies has brought great changes to
the culture of most groups of people in the world.

SHARED AND CONTESTED – Culture is shared within exclusive domains

of social relations, societies operate differently from each other leading to
cultural variations. However, culture is contested due to social differentiation
where we can see distinctive characteristic of a particular group of people
such as distinct playing of music, dancing, burial or any celebration on the
passage of life.
2 TYPES OF CULTURE

ETNOCENTRISM AND CULTURAL RELATIVISM

CULTURAL VARIATIONS

exhibit around the world. What may be considered good etiquette in
one’s culture maybe considered bad etiquette in another.
2 IMPORTANT PERCEPTIONS ON CULTURAL VARIABILITY

another culture solely by the values
ETHNOCENTRISM and standards of one’s own culture.
One views their culture as the best
and only proper to behave and
adapt.
➢ The regard that one’s culture and
society is the center of everything,
therefore far more superior than
CULTURAL others. (disrespect of other culture)
RELATIVISM ➢ It is a perception that arises from the
fact that cultures differ and each
culture defines reality differently.
➢ Underscore the idea that the culture
in every society should be
understood and regarded on its own
terms. Societies are qualitatively
different from one another.
➢ Appreciating and accepting the
uniqueness of one’s societies
cultural trait.
(respect of other culture)
