2|TLE 9- MODULE 13-14(FOURTH QUARTER)

Good washing results in fresh-smelling clothes, spotlessly clean and brighten their colors. The
guidelines for ironing begin long before you get out the iron and the ironing board. Start by washing and
drying your clothes correctly to reduce wrinkling. Never iron clothes that are dirty or still have stains. The
heat from the iron will likely set the stain into the fabric permanently.

Linen fabrics are washable but you may see clothes that have a dry clean only tag. If the linen
garment is structured like a jacket or is lined, you should
heed the dry cleaning instructions. While the linen fabric is
washable, the inner linings or materials used to help a
jacket keep its shape. Water and agitation may cause those
materials to shrink and become misshapen. That damage
can not be reversed.

What Is This Module About?

This module covers the basic knowledge, skills and attitude in washing and ironing clothes,
linen and fabric. It includes checking and sorting soiled clothes, linen and fabrics; removing
stains; preparing washing equipment and supplies; performing laundry; drying and ironing
clothes, linens and fabrics, and maintaining regular housekeeping and maintenance of laundry
area and equipment.

MODULE 13
Washing Clothes, Linens and Others Fabrics

Types of Linen and Other Fabrics

6|TLE 9- MODULE 13-14(FOURTH QUARTER)
Solid Cottons

The fibers of the cotton plant can be woven into a variety of fabrics. They can also be combined
with other natural or synthetic fibers to create blended fabrics. In general, cotton is durable, comfortable,
and easy to care for.

1. Cotton velvet- This is a medium to light weight velvet fabric, without

stretch; this fabric is great for making day wear, like jackets or jeans. It
can also be used for upholstery. It is heavier and thicker than other types
of velvet and has a matt look. Silk velvet – This is a very soft velvet with
a great drape.

2. Muslin - is a loosely woven cotton fabric. It's made using the plain weave
technique, which means that a single weft thread alternates over and
under a single warp thread. Muslin is known as the material used in
fashion prototypes to test patterns before cutting and stitching the final
product.

3. Terrycloth- terry cotton, terry towelling, terry, terry towel or simply

towelling is a fabric woven with many protruding loops of thread, which
can absorb large amounts of water. It can be manufactured by weaving or
knitting. Terrycloth is woven on special looms that have two beams of
longitudinal warp through which the filler or weft is fired laterally.

4. Flannel - is a soft woven fabric, of various fineness. Flannel was

originally made from carded wool or worsted yarn, but is now often made
from either wool, cotton, or synthetic fiber.

5. Chambray - is a plain-weave fabric, which is typically made from 100%

cotton, but there are other variations out there for you to choose from.
This plain weave fabric has a coloured yarn in the warp and a white yarn
in the weft. Although it may look similar to denim, especially with its
typically light blue colour, chambray is lighter and woven differently. It
looks like a “shot” fabric, which has a two-tone effect created by using
two different colours for the warp and weft fibres.

6. Poplin - also called tabinet (or tabbinet) is a fine, but thick, wool,
cotton or silk fabric that has a horizontal warp and a vertical weft.
Nowadays, it is a strong fabric in a plain weave of any fiber or blend,
with crosswise ribs that typically gives a corded surface.

7. Cotton voile- is a lightweight, plain woven fabric usually made from

100% cotton or cotton blend. It has the higher thread count than most

cotton fabrics, which results in a silky soft hand. Voile fabric is a perfect dressmaking option for
summer because it is lightweight, breathable and semi-sheer.

B. Patterned Cottons
C. Silks
D. Linens
E. Wool
(Please, refer to your book pages 137-139 for that topic.)

Protect your investment in both washable and nonwashable clothing and

linens by promptly treating stains.

Here are some general tips:

 Check the care label for helpful information on fiber content and recommended care -- including the
water temperature recommended for the fabric.
 If a fabric is marked "dry-clean only," blot off the excess stain and take the item to a professional
dry cleaner as soon as possible. Point out the stain and explain what it is.
 If the fabric is washable, treat the stain as quickly as possible before it has a chance to set. Use the
recommended cleaning method for that particular type of stain to treat the fabric.
 Usually, stain treatment methods will recommend cold or lukewarm water for the original
treatment. Hot water often sets stains.
 Take the time to test an inconspicuous part of the garment (for example, a seam allowance) with the
recommended cleaning method before proceeding. This test will let you know whether the cleaning
method will damage the fabric.
 Blot the stain rather than rub it. Blotting draws the stain out of the fabric. Rubbing pushes the stain
into the fabric and can damage fibers.
 Products containing enzymes are often recommended for protein-base stains, such as blood. Check
product labels for this ingredient. Most enzyme products will promote their ability to remove these
stains.
 Always check a wet garment to see if the stain is gone before putting it in the dryer. The heat of the
dryer can set the stain and make it permanent.
 Washable fabrics usually include acrylic, burlap, cotton, denim, linen, nylon, polyester, and
spandex.
 Nonwashable fabrics usually include acetate, fiberglass, rayon, silk, triacetate, and wool.
 If a stained garment is a favorite piece or was an expensive purchase, you may want to take it to a
dry cleaner for professional treatment even if it is washable.

(For the repairing defective clothing, linens, and other fabrics, preparing laundry supplies and equipment,
please refer to your book Learning and Living in the 21 st Century Caregiving with the author Leonora
David-Basbas,Ph.D. pages 140- 142.)

MODULE 14
Ironing Newly Laundered Clothes and Linens

Ironing

Ironing is the use of a heated tool to remove wrinkles from fabric. The heating is commonly done to
a temperature of 180–220 °Celsius, depending on the fabric. Ironing works by loosening the bonds between
the long-chain polymer molecules in the fibers of the material. While the molecules are hot, the fibers are
straightened by the weight of the iron, and they hold their new shape as they cool. Some fabrics, such as
cotton, require the addition of water to loosen the intermolecular bonds. Many modern fabrics are
advertised as needing little or no ironing. Permanent press clothing was developed to reduce the ironing
necessary by combining wrinkle-resistant polyester with cotton. The first known use of heated metal to
"iron" clothes is known to have occurred in China. The electric iron was invented in 1882, by Henry W.
Seeley. Seeley patented his "electric flatiron" on June 6, 1882.

How to Iron Shirts

 Start the process by ironing the collar. Stretch

the back of it across the flat surface of the
board. Run the iron over the back of the collar
several times until you are sure it is correctly
pressed. Turn the shirt over and handle the
front of the collar.
 Move to the sleeves of the garment. You need to
be sure to iron the back of the sleeves first, then move to the front of the sleeves. Start by stretching
the larger part of the sleeves across the point of the ironing board. Iron all the way around the back
of the sleeves, then move it toward the sleeve front until you have ironed the circumference of the
sleeve. Stretch the lower back of the sleeve across the large, flat surface of the ironing board. Iron
toward the cuffs. Flip the shirt over and do the front, making sure to take careful, short strokes.
 When you get ready to handle the rest of the shirt, lay it as flat as possible on the ironing board.
Work from one side to the other slowly smoothing out the wrinkled spots as you go.
 Hang the shirt directly after you finish ironing. Be sure to button the top and center buttons.

How to Iron Dresses

 Begin by stretching the skirt portion of the dress

across the point of the ironing board. If you are
working with pleats, start at the bottom and work
toward the top. Work your way around the skirt with
strong, fast strokes.
 If the top of the dress won't stretch across the point of
the ironing board, smooth it as flat as possible across the
large, flat surface of the board. Start with the back and work your way to the front. On each side, be
sure to work from the top down.
 Hang the dress as soon as possible after you iron it. Try not to wear the garment for a few hours, as
it will be more prone to wrinkling again once you've heated the fibers.
11 | T L E 9 - M O D U L E 1 3 - 1 4 ( F O U R T H Q U A R T E R )
How to Iron Pants

 Turn the pants inside out. Begin with the top.

Iron the circumference of the waistband.
Move toward the pockets. Be sure to iron
both sides of the pockets. Iron the fly, then
the seams of the pants, then the hems. Follow
that order carefully, and use smooth, quick
strokes.
 Turn the pants so the correct side is facing out. hook the waistline of the pants around the arrow
shaped edge of the board. Use the iron to press out the wrinkles of the top front part of your pants.
 Put the pants legs parallel to the board, with both of them headed in the same direction. Iron each
leg without damaging the current creases.
 Iron the cuffs, and hang the pants.

Ironing clothes is really a delicate process. The iron produces so much heat that if you are not sure
how to iron clothes, you should really get educated on the process before you start. It's not as simple as
flopping a shirt on an ironing board. It takes effort to learn how to iron like a professional. For some people
it takes a long time, but if you learn how to iron, you can cut the time you spend ironing.
