You only need to do this test once, because no matter how many times you do it, we only refer to your
first score.Note: For this test, it is highly recommended that you use the Google Chrome browser as
the audio clips are not supported in other browser types. For future reference, Google Chrome is the
most commonly supported browser within Appen.
Spelling

• Please type out the words you hear as they would be spelled in a dictionary

• Words should be written using US English spelling. For tips on correct US English spelling, please visit the following link:

o http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/words/british-and-american-spelling

• Hyphens are acceptable if needed for the normal spelling of a word

o Example: re-engineer

Capital Letters:

• Use capital letters as usual for proper names (people, places, companies) and the pronoun "I"

• Example:

o Incorrect: smith visited his son in new york

o Correct: Smith visited his son in New York

• Do not use capital letters at the start of your answers unless they begin with a proper name or the personal pronoun "I"

• Example:

o Incorrect: Hi there how are you

o Correct: hi there how are you

Numbers:

• Numbers should be written out as words, e.g. "twenty one" not "21"

Punctuation:

• Do not use sentence-level punctuation, for example full stops (periods), commas, question marks etc.

• Example:

o Incorrect: hi there. how are you ?

o Correct: hi there how are you

• Hyphens are acceptable (see spelling instruction)

• Apostrophes should be used as per normal spelling rules e.g. can't

Abbreviations:

• Do not use abbreviations: words should be spelled out in full

• Example:

o Incorrect: it's on Jones St

o Correct: it's on Jones Street

Contractions:

• It is okay to use common contractions when the speaker pronounces the words in that way, for example these are
acceptable contractions in US English:

o "gonna" (for "going to")

o "cos" (for "because")

Hesitation sounds:

• Do not include any fillers/hesitation sounds like "um", "er", "uh", and so on

Here are some examples of correctly formatted answers:

• hi there how are you

• okay I see what you mean John

• George W Bush was the forty third president

• I don't wanna go cos it's too expensive

Important: Do not copy and paste characters from the internet as this may generate an error message and prevent you
from saving your answer. If you do have to copy text do so from a plain text editor (e.g. Notepad).

Important: You are free to use search engines such as Google, Bing, etc. to check that you have the correct spelling for the
names that you hear.
