Anne Frank was born in 1929 in Germany. She had a small family: her father - a German
officer from World War I, her mother, and a sister called Margot who was three years older
than her.
In 1933 her family moved to the Netherlands to start a new life because they were afraid of
Hitler. Anne was a very studious and hard working student who had a passion for books.
She loved reading and dreamt of being a famous writer. She was also a very energetic and
outgoing girl. She had many friends in the Netherlands and sent long hours playing with her
friends.
In June 1942, Anne received a notebook for her thirteenth birthday. She decided to use it as
a diary and wrote about her dreams to become a writer. In July, she and her family were
ordered to go to a work camp so they decided to hide in the attic of her father’s workplace.
They shared the small space with another family for two years. They survived thanks to
some friends who regularly sent them food.
Unfortunately, in August 1944, German security police discovered them and arrested its
occupants. Anne was sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Anne died of typhus in
March 1945. Her diary was found and given to her father. It is one of the most widely read
books in the world today.
