WEEK 1 & 2 QUIZ

SEAMANSHIP – 2 D301

Date: Jan.13,2021

Cadet Full Name: 4cl Gabutin, Gian Carlo Viña Section: Aalborg
(family) (first) (middle)

Write your answer in the same paper.

Q1. As per Archimedes principle what is displacement? 5 points

Ans. - A body at rest in a fluid is acted upon by a force pushing upward called the
buoyant force, which is equal to the weight of the fluid that the body
displaces.
Q2. From the figures below explains why TPC varies with different draughts. 5
points
Ans. - As weights are loaded on board a vessel, it will gradually sink lower in the
water. The amount of weight which will sink the vessel 1 cm deeper in the
water, that is, the weight which will increase the draft by 1 cm is called the
tons per centimeter immersion (TPC).
Problem Solving: (5 points each) Complete solution is a must.
Q3. A block of steel has dimensions 3m x 2m x 1m and density of 7.96 t/m³.
a) Calculate the mass of the block. ANS. 47.76 tons
Mass x Density = 47.76 tons
(3x2x1) 7.96t/m 3

b) The block is partially immersed to a depth of 36cm in dock water RD

1.008. What load in tons, will register on a very accurate crane gauge?
ANS. 45.583 Tons
Mass= Volume x RD - Original mass
= 45.582 tons
(3x2x0.36) 1.008 – 47.76
(2.17728) – 47.76
c) If the crane operator lowers the block so that it is fully immersed, what
load, in tons, will now register on the crane gauge? ANS. 41.712
tons
Mass = Volume x RD – Original Mass =41.712 tons
(3x2x1) 1.008 – 47.76
Q4. A Ship has a cargo oil tank which has length 26m, breadth 12.4m, and a depth
of 16.6m. What will be the ullage be if it is filled with 2,800 tons of petroleum
RD 0.68? ANS. 3.828 m
Mass = (length x breadth x sounding) density
2800 = (26m x 12.4m x sounding) density
2800 = 322.4 x sounding x 0.68 t/m3
2800
219.232 sounding = 12.77185 Ullage = 3.828m
¿ 12.77185
Ullage = total depth – sounding
Ullage= 16.6 - 12.77185

Q5. A box-shaped vessel has the following particulars: Length 86m, breadth
18.2m, depth 10m and floats at a draught of 3.6m in salt water.
a) Calculate the Displacement of the vessel. ANS. 5775.588 Tons

Displacement = Volume x density

= (86m x 18.2m x 3.6m) 1.025
= 5775.588 tons

b) At what draught will the vessel float if it is towed into dock water RD
1.012? ANS. 3.646 M

Displacement = Volume x density

5775.588 tons = 86m x 18.2m x Draught x 1.012
5775.588 = 1583.9824 Draught
1583.9824 1583.9824
Draught = 3.646m

c) 300 tons of Rock Salt is now loaded into the vessel while it is floating in
the dock water. Calculate the new volume of displacement. ANS.
6003.545 m³.

water. Calculate the new volume of displacement. ANS. 6003.6 m³

New volume = original volume + load displacement
Density
NV = 5775.588 + 300
1.012
= 6003.545m3
d) How much more Rock Salt must be loaded so that the vessel will float at
its maximum permitted draught of 5.62m in salt water. ANS. 2940.7
Tons

Maximum Draught = Volume x Cb x p - displacement

= (86m x 18.2m x 5.62m) 1.025t/m^3 - 6075.6tons
= 2940.7 tons

Q6. A ship floats at an even keel draught in salt water of 3.86m. The length and
breadth of the waterline is 84.0m and 14.0m respectively. If the block
coefficient is 0.742, calculate:
a) The displacement of the ship. ANS. 3452.410 Tons

Displacement = (L x B x D x Cb) x p
= (84.0m x 14.0m x 3.86m x 0.742)1.025
= 3452.410 tons

b) The draught of the ship when floating in dock water RD 1.006 (assuming
that the Cb does not change between the ranges of draughts concerned)
ANS. 3.933 M

Displacement = (L x B x D x Cb) density

3452.410 = (84 x 14 x D x 0.742) 1.006
3452.410 = 877.828 D
877.828 877.828
D = 3.933m

Q7. A ship is loading in dock water RD 1.012 and has a mean draught of 7.16m.
The TPC in salt water for the same draught is 17.820. Calculate the final
draught after 264 tons has been loaded. ANS 7.310 m

TPC = weight D =14. 815 m TPC = weight D = 7.310m

draught D
17.820 = 264 tons 100 = 14.815
D D
Q8. A ship has a length and breadth at the waterline of 76.20m and 13.94m
respectively. If the coefficient of fineness of the waterplane area at this
waterline is 0.782,
a) Calculate the TPC if the ship floats in dock water RD 1.012. ANS. 830.662
M

CW = WPA
LxB
WPA = L x B x CW
= 76.20m x 13.94m x 0.782
= 830.662m^2

b) How much cargo must be loaded on the ship to increase the draught by
0.20m? ANS. 168.1 Tons

Increase of Draught = weight

TPC
Weight = increase of draught x TPC
= 20 x 8.406
= 168.1 tons

Q9. A ship’s water plane area has half-ordinates from aft to forward as follows
0.6m, 1.5m, 1.6m, 1.4m, and 0.0 m. if the half-ordinates are equally spaced at
4.2m apart calculate:
A. the total water plane area ANS. 43.12 m²

ORDINATE SM AREA

0.6m 1 0.6

1.5m 4 6.0

1.6m 2 3.2

1.4m 4 5.6

0.0m 1 0.0
Sum = 15.4
Area = ⅓ x h x sum
= ⅓ x 4.2 x 15.4
= 21.56m^2

B. the TPC if the ship is floating in salt water (RD 1.025) ANS. 0.442

TPC = WPA x p = 43.12 x 1.025 = 0.442

Q10. Using the hydrostatic particulars determine the displacement, and TPC
values for the ship when floating at a draught of 6.30m in:
A. salt water (RD 1.025) ANS:
