LEARNING MODULE IN SCIENCE FOR GRADE 8

MODULE NO.12. CONCEPT MODULE

TOPIC: EARTHQUAKE

Dear Parents;

In this time of health pandemic, we would be glad if you could help us facilitate this lesson to our learners to be
able to continue his/her the holistic development. Thank you and we will heal and journey as one.

School Administration
I. LEARNING TARGETS:
In this lesson, the learners will be able to;
1. Describe earthquake,
2. Differentiate intensity of an earthquake from its magnitude,
3. Locate the parts of an earthquake
4. Explain how seismograph detects ground movement.

II. LESSON PROPER

Earthquake -is a shaking of the ground caused by a sudden release of energy in the earth’s crust.
- are the result of energy being released when faults slip. The force of an earthquake depends on
the amount of energy released.
- earthquake causes immense destruction when such a huge amount of energy builds up for
hundreds of years is suddenly released in a matter of few seconds. The rocks can no longer
sustain the deforming force. The elastic limit has been reached. Potential energy has built up over long
periods of time quickly converted into kinetic energy. The sudden release of energy is called Elastic
Rebound.
EARTHQUAKE CAN BE CATEGORIZED ACCORDING TOTYPES, DEPENDEING ON WHAT CAUSES AN EARTHQUAKE
1. TECTONIC EARTHQUAKE -occur when rocks 2. VOLCANIC EARTHQUAKE -it occurs
in earth crust break due to geological forces created by conjunction with volcanic eruption.
movement of tectonic plate.
SEISMIC ENERGY -it is a special type of kinetic energy that rocks break along a fault, stored elastic energy is
released. This energy passes through rocks as SEISMIC WAVES, and special form their point of origin
toward Earth’s surface.
PHILVOCS (Philippine Institute Of Volcanology and Seismology) -is the Government agency in charge of
monitoring and mitigating the disastrous effect of Volcanic eruption, earthquakes, and tsunamis.
ANATOMY OF AN EARTHQUAKE:
FOCUS (HYPOCENTER)
-is the point in the rock’s zone of weakness where the breaking of the rocks first starts, and seismic
energy released. The location where the elastic rebound occur.
FAULT PLANE -breaking surface underground. The fault plane itself is where movement takes place.
FAULT LINE -edge of the fault plane that shows how much movement has taken place.
FAULT SCRAP -usually best sign that there is a fault in the area.
EPICENTER -the spot of the surface directly above the focus. Energy is released from the focus as vibration.
SEQUENCE OF AN EARTHQUAKE
TERMS DEFINITION
FORE SHOCK Occur when rock layers become stressed and develop minor cracks after breaking it.
MAIN SHOCK Largest magnitude of an earthquake
AFTER SHOCK Are earthquake that occur after main shock.

TYPES OF EARTHQUAKE ACCORDING TO DEPTH OF FOCUS

TYPES FOCAL DEPTH FROM EARTH SURFACE
SHALLOW-FOCUS <70km
INTERMEDIATE-FOCUS 70 – 300km
DEEP FOCUS >300km
DIFFERENT INSTRUMENTS USED FOR STUDYING AND RECORDING EARTHQUKES:
1. SEISMOGRAPHS – measure horizontal, vertical and rotational motions correlated with time.
- invented by FILIPO CECCHI (1875) an Italian physicist and priest.
2. HORIZONTAL SEISMOGRAPH – have pendulum, which is a mass suspended by wire, attached to a frame
supported by a base set on the ground.
- JOHN MILNE – who was a professor at the Imperial College of Engineering in Tokyo,
is mostly credited for the 1880 invention of a sensitive horizontal pendulum seismograph.
3. SEISMOMETER – differ from the earlier machines mainly because they record earthquakes electronically.
- The most modern instruments, the sensors that measure ground movement are separate
from the instruments that record the motion.
- JAMES ALFRED EWING and THOMAS LOMAR GRAY -they are the one who
designated the seismometer.
4. SEISMOGRAM – data recorded by seismometers, which shows the ground motion at a specific measuring
station recorded against time.
- may look like random wiggly lines.
-the wiggly lines represent the seismic waves that pass through the area as earthquakes.
-SEISMOLOGIST -can tell if the recorded ground motion was caused by an earthquake,
volcanic eruption, or an explosion of dynamite.
AMPLITUDE -the stronger the ground motion, the taller the height.
EFFECTS OF AN EARTHQUAKE
1. TSUNAMI -is a series of large destructive ocean waves. Cause of underwater earthquakes, it can also result
from other geological disturbances such as under water volcanic eruption, and underwater
landslides.
2. SINKHOLE -is a deep hole in the ground. The continuous shaking of the ground to loosen rock and
underwater

TOPIC: VISION PROBLEMS AND OPTICAL INSTRUMENTS

NAME: _______________________________________ DATE:______________________

SECTION:_____________________________________

Dear Parents;
This module is now designed to assess the degree of learning of our learners with the lesson presented to them
which you facilitated in the previous modules. At this, time may we help them explain the learning targets
which we want them to achieve in this module before allowing them to work independently in this learning
assessment. Thank you and we will heal and journey as one.
