1. INTRODUCTION
Chamba tunnel has been proposed to bypass the main centre of Chamba town as
part of the upgrading of NH-94. The proposed tunnel passes through the ridge on
which Chamba town is located. For the tunnel excavation and support design it is
essential to identify the sub-surface geological conditions along the tunnel alignment
to provide a basis for the design and to reduce the uncertainties associated with the
tunnel excavation. Therefore, an exploration programme was carried out to develop
the geological model along the tunnel alignment.

The main objective of this report is to design Steel rib support for Portal reach.

2. LAYOUT
The layout of Road Tunnel is shown in Exhibit-I. It proposed to provide Horse Shoe
shaped (type) tunnel, the sectional detail of Road Tunnel is shown in fig.1.

3. DESIGN CRITERIA

The analysis and design of rock support system is broadly divided into two
categories, i.e. section with rock cover less than 1.5 (B + H) called portal reach and
section having rock cover more than 1.5 (B + H), called normal reach or beyond
portal reach. This report deals with portal reach wherein the steel ribs are designed
to carry the rock load equal to the rock cover load. Steel ribs are also proposed in
normal reaches where ‘Q’ value is less than 0.1.

3.2 Geo-technical Properties


Based on Reference as mentioned in clause 3.1, 9 - the tunnel alignment crosses the
Chamba ridge which is inhabited by Chamba Town. The alignment is occupied
predominantly by Phyllite and Quartzite overlain by Colluvium.
Based on report it is understood that the South portal of the tunnel is located in the
bed rock of weathered phyllites.

The north Portal of the tunnel is located partly in bed rock and partly in 13m deep
Colluvium as indicated by BH-3.

3.3 Materials Properties

• Shotcrete

The shotcrete to be used on the excavated surface of rock shall be of minimum


grade of M35 (characteristic compressive strength 35 MPa).

• Ribs

All Structural steel ribs shall be confirming to IS: 2062


Yield strength of steel (fy) = 550 N/mm2
Maximum Permissible stresses in steel as per IS: 800 – 2000 is below:
• In direct compression = 0.6fy = 330 N/mm²
• In direct tension = 0.6fy = 330 N/mm²
• In flexural compression = 0.66fy = 363 N/mm²
• In flexural tension = 0.66fy = 363 N/mm²
• Overburden

Based on Reference as mentioned in clause 3.1 - 9, the properties of the overburden


for portal reach is taken as:
• Density of over burden = 2.5 t/m3

3.4 Size of Tunnel

The finished size of the tunnel will be 5.55 m radius horse shoe-Shaped as shown in
figure-1. The excavated size of the tunnel section shall be computed considering
different support system. However, for computation of rock load on steel ribs,
following ISMB sections have been considered.

• For Portal reach

Depth of ribs made from ISMB200


Depth = 200 mm
Let thickness of shotcrete = 150 mm
Width ‘B’ = 11.1 + 2 x (0.25 + 0.2 + 0.15) m
= 12.30 m

Height Ht = 8.788 + 0.25 + 0.20 + 0.15 m


= 9.388 m

4. Load Calculations For Portal Reaches


i. According to clause B-3.1.1 of IS: 4880, Part IV (Annexure–2), rock load at depths
less than or equal to 1.5 (B + Ht) may be taken as equal to depth of actual rock cover
where, ‘B’ is the width and ‘Ht’ is the height of the tunnel opening.
Thus, maximum rock height = 1.5 x (12.3 + 9.388) m
Transferring load = 32.532 m

Adopting a maximum rock cover of 32.532 m for design

Rock Load Intensity = 2.5 x 32.532


= 81.33 T/m2 ~ 0.81 Mpa
Strength of 150 mm shotcrete (As per Clause 10.4.1 of IS 15026:2002)

drawn to the crown of the tunnel section. The dimensions of the parabola are

iv. In Fenner’s method and Russian practice, taken from IS-4880, are based on old
state of art (≈1970s) with assumption that rock mass is an isotropic and elastic
media. After late 1970s, it is widely accepted that rocks behave more as an
assemblage of intact rock blocks supported by different types of geological
discontinuities.
Steel ribs are considered for the portal reach
Rock load per cl. 4 (i) = 0.81 Mpa.
Load carried by 150 mm shotcrete 4 (a) = 0.11 MPa.
Load taken by steel rib = 0.70 Mpa.

5. Design of Steel Ribs


Steel Ribs For Portal Reach
The Calculation and design of ribs for portal is annexed as Annexure-1.
The blocking points to ribs are provided at 12.5° in the overt portion. Accordingly Rib
of ISMB200 @ 25.4 Kg/m with 450mm c/c spacing is sufficient.

B-2. LOAD DISTRIBUTION
B-2.1 Rock load may be assumed as an equivalent uniformly
distributed load over the tunnel soffit over a span equal to the tunnel
width or diameter as the case may be.
B-3. LOAD
B-3.1 Rock loads may be estimated by any of the methods given
in B-3.1.1 to B-3.1.3.
B-3.1.1 Rock load at depths less than or equal to 1.5 ( B + Ht ) may be
taken as equal to depth of actual rock cover where B is the width and
Ht is the height of the tunnel opening. In case of circular tunnels B and
Ht both will be equal to the diameter of tunnel D.
Rock load ( Hp ) on the roof of support in tunnel with width B and
height Ht at depth of more than 1.5 ( B + Ht ) may be assumed to be
according to Table 1.
B-3.1.2 Rock load may also be worked out using Fenner’s ellipse ( see
Fig. 4 on P 21 ) by the following equation:

m = inverse of poissons ratio for rock (which usually varies
from 2 to7).
The weight of rock in the shaded portion may be taken as rock load and
may be considered as uniformly distributed on the diameter of tunnel.
NOTE — The above treatment assumes the rock to be homogeneous and to behave
within elastic range. It has also limited application as it does not give any rock loads
for value of poissons ratio equal to 0.25 and above. It does not also take into
consideration the strength and characteristics of rock.
B-3.1.3 The rock load according to the Russian practice depends upon the
degree of rock firmness. The rock load may be taken as that for rock area
enclosed by a parabola starting from intersection points of the rupture
planes with horizontal length drawn to the crown of the tunnel section.
The dimensions of the parabola are given below ( see Fig. 5 on P 21 ):
