SYSTEMS OF
LINEAR EQUATIONS

A system of linear equations is a set of two or more linear

equations in two or more variables.

EXAMPLES

𝑥 − 𝑦 = −2 𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 21 𝑎+𝑏+𝑐 =6
ቊ ቊ ቐ2𝑎 − 3𝑏 + 5𝑐 = 11
4𝑥 − 𝑦 = 4 2𝑥 − 3𝑦 = 7
5𝑎 + 2𝑏 − 3𝑐 = 0

garden. Is Anthony’s claim true?
SYSTEMS OF
NONLINEAR EQUATIONS

A system of nonlinear equations is a set of two or more equations

in two or more variables containing at least one equation that is
nonlinear.

❖ A solution to a system of equations of two variables is an ordered pair that makes

all the equations true.
❖ Graphically, a solution is a point of intersection of the graphs of the equations.
❖ The collection of all solutions enclosed in braces and separated by commas is
called a solution set.
EXAMPLES

2𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 18 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 13 𝑥2 + 𝑦 − 3 = 0
ቊ ቊ ൝ 2
𝑥𝑦 = 14 𝑥−𝑦 =5 𝑥 + 𝑦2 − 9 = 0

𝑥2 𝑦2
𝑥2+ 𝑦2 = 10 4𝑥 2+ 3𝑦 2
= 48 − =1
ቊ ൝ 2 ቐ 2 4
2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 1 𝑥 + 𝑦2 = 4 8𝑥 2 − 4𝑦 − 16 = 0

TECHNIQUES IN SOLVING SYSTEMS
OF NONLINEAR EQUATIONS

SUBSTITUTION METHOD
➢ In substitution, we solve one equation for one variable and then
substitute this expression into the other equation

ELIMINATION METHOD
➢ In elimination, we get rid of one of the variables by adding or
subtracting equations (or multiples of equations)
➢ Can be used only when a variable has the same power in each of
the equations

TYPES OF SYSTEMS
BASED ON SOLUTIONS

INCONSISTENT SYSTEM
➢ a system of equations with no solution
➢ graphs do not have an intersection

CONSISTENT SYSTEM
➢ A system of equations with one or infinitely many solutions
❖ INDEPENDENT - a consistent system with exactly one solution (graphs
intersect at exactly only point)
❖ DEPENDENT - a consistent system with infinitely many solutions (graphs
coincide)
